New Zealand Prime Minister Speaks Out Regarding Pokie Limits

This story was published more than 6 years ago.

In an interview with New Zealand Radio, the country's Prime Minister John Key spoke out about a Green Party proposal which would restrict pokie machine betting, saying the measure is unrealistic and would drive players to offshore betting sites.

Key claimed that the overall idea to restrict betting amounts in advance is good in theory, but that New Zealanders would find a way around those limits by betting offshore.

Speaking about internet betting Key said, "There are no restrictions on that. I can't even fathom to work out how you would restrict online gambling, and so it's a bit farcical to say that you could only go to the casino and spend this amount of money but, by the way, in your home you could bet away your entire net worth."
