Ireland based betting firm Paddy Power has announced that it will be attempting to offer real money sports betting via Facebook, becoming the first firm to offer such a service.

The betting will be offered as a Facebook app and will be made available to punters in the United Kingdom, which is the first betting market that Facebook has authorized for online betting.

The app will be called Paddy Power In-Play! and will allow punters to bet through the social networking site. Of course, user identity verification is going to be an important feature of the app, as players will have their age verified.

Speaking about the app Paddy Power Online Managing Director Peter O'Donovan said, "The launch of the first real money sports betting product on Facebook is testament to Paddy Power's e-commerce and technology capabilities, as well as our international industry leadership position in social media. We are pleased to partner with Facebook on this pioneering work."

Facebook's Will Collins added: "Given the popularity of sports betting in the UK, we're delighted to be welcoming Paddy Power onto the Facebook gaming platform with an innovative gaming experience."
