Shanghai Puts Internet Gambling Operators In Prison

Twenty five people were placed in jail by the Shanghai District People's Court last week after being convicted of running an illegal online betting site.

Those sentenced were associated with an international football betting website whose enterprise is based outside of China, generating revenues of RMB 400 million (USD $64.2 million). The defendants were arrested in February after an 18 month investigation.

The defendants were sentenced to jail terms ranging between 6 months and 5 years, with fines ranging from $1,600 to $16,000/
