Pennsylvania Considers Privatizing Lottery, Legalizing Online Gambling

Through a statement released last Friday, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett revealed that his administration is considering legalizing online betting as well as the privatization of the Pennsylvania Lottery.

The statement revealed that online gambling proposals were "on the table". The Governor went on to state that his administration would only consider online gambling if "the State could guarantee itself more money".

"If we can ensure increased funding and protect our seniors who are the recipients of the lottery ... then we have our obligation to take a look at privatizing," Corbett said.

The idea of privatizing the Lottery is opposed by the state's Democrats as well as Pennsylvania's largest worker unions. Recent results have shown that the lottery has contributed $1 billion to the state and delivered a growth rate of 8.5%.
