Spread betting firm the Sporting Index has reported that it had a record breaking Olympics with turnover during the London games, taking in nine times the number of bets that it did during the Beijing games four years ago.
The company reported that 70% of all customers who have been active during the past three weeks placed at least one bet on the Olympics. The increase in turnover comes as the Sporting Index increases the number of events that punters could wager on. During the Beijing Olympics, the firm took bets on 16 events; London saw 36 events being wagered on. All 302 medal events had bets placed.
Sporting Index Commercial Director Mark Maydon said the results exceeded expectations.
The most popular events during the games were soccer and tennis. Basketball, athletics, boxing, cycling, and swimming also proved to be very popular for betting.
