This story was published more than 11 years ago.

A report in the Daily News Portugal newspaper states that Portugal is viewing online gambling as a potential source of tax revenues for the cash strapped country.

The news report states that politicians are looking into different options to bring online gambling into the regulated world.

The paper reports that the country is investigating the options of:

  • Limited liberalisation that excludes online casino gaming and effectively gives the Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa monopoly control over regulation and licensing of other online betting activities.

  • Maintaining the status quo and

  • A more liberal regulatory and licensing environment similar to that in other European countries, such as neighboring Spain.
