Online betting site 188Bet has announced that it is leaving the German gaming market due to the government's recent decision to require all operators to possess a German gaming license.
188Bet dropped out of the market on July 4th and announced that no German players will be allowed to play at its site. The site will honor all pending bets and pay out all positive balances to players whose accounts are closed. 188Bet plans to have paid out all accounts by July 18th.
The new German requirement to have operators obtain a betting license is quite controversial, as they are hard to come by. Furthermore, the question has been raised as to the legality of the measure, as the European Union generally forbids such moves.
