Betonline's Poker Situation Spreads Confusion

This story was published more than 12 years ago.

Panama based sportsbook and poker site Betonline has had the status of its poker operations put into doubt, causing mass confusion for the firm's several poker players.

For the past several weeks, players on internet forums have posted about the delay in payments or inability to deposit at Betonline Poker. The company's poker site is powered by the Chico Poker Network, which allows US players to play poker through the website.

Earlier this week however, things got even stranger as Betonline's Poker site suddenly went offline without informing any of its players beforehand. Players then contacted support, who told players a variety of stories including that the company was "undergoing maintenance".

The Chico Poker Network then issued a statement that told players that it has terminated Betonline's poker licensing agreement, saying : "Access to BetOnline has been shut down permanently, as they are no longer a licensee on the network. Your poker customer balance has already been pushed back to BetOnline and we request that you go to their website."

Later, Betonline issued two statements regarding the closure of its poker site. The first statement told players: "The good news is that we have a fantastic new poker licensee which will be available to you shortly – all you will have to do is install the new poker software as soon as it is available,"

A second statement by the company said: "In an effort to provide you with an improved poker product, the poker room will be closed for maintenance over the next few days. To help us expedite this process please log out of the poker client if you are currently logged in. If you play poker at BetOnline and your poker account is currently funded, your money will be transferred over to your sports betting account within the next 72 hours. Once the upgrades are completed, you will be able to transfer your funds back over to your poker account and resume playing immediately."

Betonline was established in 2001 and reportedly has a large workforce in its hometown of Panama City. The site offers sports betting, casino games, poker, and horse betting to punters around the globe.
