Melbourne Cricket Ground Bans Live Odds

This story was published more than 11 years ago.

With live odds promotion coming under fire in Australia, the Melbourne Cricket Ground has announced that it will no longer allow live odds to be posted on its scoreboard during Australian Football League games.

Although live odds may be banned, betting companies will still be allowed to advertise within the stadium; as long as they continue to be recognized as a club sponsor.

Currently online betting company Betfair holds a contract to display live odds at the MCG and Etihad Stadium, but that contract will be allowed to expire at the end of the season without the opportunity to renew.

John Wylie, Chairman of the MCG said that "sharp increase in advertising of gambling agents" that were pressing live odds during matches came to concern the trust. MCG Chief Executive Stephen Gough had previously said that spectator complaints in regards to the live odds had prompted a review and is responsible for the banning of live odds.
