Online sportsbook Ladbrokes today announced that it will cease taking bets and player registrations from Polish players. The blacklisting of Polish players is because of a new Polish gambling law which is set to come into effect in July. This new legislation forces operators to offer betting under only a Poland based license, not a generalized European Union license.

Ladbrokes, who currently operates under the E.U. license does not intend to apply for the Polish license. Ladbrokes has advised current bettors on its system to withdraw funds from their accounts. The law, which was signed into law in April by President Bronislaw Komorowski has been seen as controversial by many people in the European Union.

Among the controversial points:

  • A twelve percent tax on turnover
  • A requirement for all gambling servers to be based in Poland and utilise a .pl domain
  • All transactions for gambling operators must take place within Polish banks
