Bet365 applies for Australian sportsbetting licence

This story was published more than 12 years ago.

Denise Coates, co-CEO and founder of the successful UK online gambling group Bet365, has revealed that the company has applied for an online gambling licence in Australia in its first offshore venture. If granted, the licence, which would be from the Northern Territory government in Oz, will enable the company to commence operations from a Darwin base by end 2011.

Under Australian law, online gambling is permitted for in-play and sports betting wagering only. A relaxation of interstate gambling advertising restrictions two years ago has seen the overall gambling business climb dramatically, with significant growth in revenues.

Other major UK gambling firms active in the Aussie market include Paddy Power through its acquisition of Sportsbet, betting exchange giant Betfair and Sportingbet, which recently acquired Centrebet.
