Iowa bill trudges forward

Despite the fact that it has been transformed from an online poker legalisation bill to one calling for a report on the consequences and advantages of such a bill, it's still heartening to know that state Sen. Jeff Danielson's Iowa proposal is making progress.

The measure now calls for a report from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission by December 1st 2011 on the issue, and its latest positive passage through the House State Government Committee indicates that it could be presented to the Assembly for a vote by next week.

The original legalisation content fell foul of political ignorance on the subject late in March after achieving rapid progress through various legislative committees against a tough procedural deadline.

According to supporters of the bill, somewhere around 150,000 Iowans currently play online poker for real money. Intrastate legalisation could deliver an additional $30 million in tax revenues to state government coffers.
