Greek Government starts regulated online gambling consultation

Predictions earlier this year by OPAP chief exec Ioannis Spanoudakis that the Greek government would regulate online gambling appear to have been right on the money, according to a MarketWatch report this week.

The publication reports that the Greek government started public consultations Thursday on a legislative plan to regulate gambling, including online gambling.

The Finance Ministry said around €4 billion in illegal gambling takes place in the country each year, and revealed that the legislative initiative is designed to conform to a European Court ruling that the current ban on all technical games in Greece is illegal and to regulate an "extensive" illegal gambling market in both physical locations and over the Internet.
