I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about Mahjong, other than that it's a Chinese tile game. Recently my mother began playing it with her old lady friends, and has become smitten with it, so I guess it must have some sort of fun value. The Mahjong 88 slot is the first slot machine that I've seen based on this tile game, and although it's not strictly tied to the game's rules, it does serve as an interesting reactor style slot nonetheless.
Mahjong 88 is an 8x8 reactor style slot that's set on a pond that's teeming with flowers, coins, and tiles. There's a frog that sits on a pedestal to the side of the reels, interjecting to help players from time to time. The gameplay sees players working to combine four or more clustered matching symbols, which mimic the titles you see in the standard Mahjong tile set. Obviously, matching more of the tiles will result in bigger wins. Winning tiles are removed from the board and are replaced by random tiles, which can let you chain together wins.
The frog is key to being rewarded with the game's bonus features. Chain together wins of 33 tiles or more and the frog will reward you with one of four random features. Croak pays a win based on scattered symbols rather than clustered ones. Spawn transforms one random symbol into another. Tongue transforms symbols in a line across the board from one edge to the other. And finally the Hop feature transforms a random symbol and destroys adjacent symbols. In addition the frog will pay an additional 5x multiplier if you manage to string together a win of 88 tiles or more on a single spin.
The game also features a changing seasons mechanic that occurs randomly. When this happens you win a season change bonus which is equal to 10% of all symbol wins since the last season change. There is also the chance to trigger a seasonal wild feature on any non-winning spin, with the behaviour of the wild symbols corresponding to the current season.
This game can be played on your computer or through your mobile device, as smartphone or tablet compatibility is baked in. The game is a bit squished to me in mobile mode, although certainly playable. If you're a fan of Mahjong and want to see it somewhat turned into a casino game, then Mahjong 88 is a great choice.
