2021 Academy Awards competition. Enter and win CLchips!

19 replies • Last post

Hey there everyone. We're back in 2021 for what should be one of the stranger Academy Awards ceremonies in living memory. What with Covid and cinemas closed everywhere, there weren't really a lot of new movies released. But as is tradition we are running our annual tipping competition which gives you the chance to win a tidy haul of CLchips to spend in our lovely little shop.

You can win yourself up to 200 CLchips by predicting who will win at the 93nd annual Oscars, which will be held on Sunday April 25 at 6:30pm U.S. ET.

The rules are simple:
1. Entry is free to all Casino Listings members. Register here if you aren't a member yet.
2. Nominate your winner in each of the categories below in a reply to this thread. The person who picks the most winners scoops the pool of 100 CLchips.
3. If there is a tie we will split the pool evenly.
4. If someone gets every single category right, we'll double the prize to 200 CLchips.
5. Entries close at the beginning of the Oscars ceremony on Sunday April 25 at 6:30pm U.S. ET.
6. You can enter multiple times if you change your mind, but only your last dated post will be used as your entry.

Here are the categories that you have to pick, along with one extra special question for good measure.

Yeah this one is going to be very open. Out of all those movies nominated in the various categories I've only seen Tenet, Soul, and My Octopus Teacher. So I have about as much idea as you guys.

If 12. includes the categories that are not listed here, my guess is that Tenet gets the most.
Like 2014. 12 Years a Slave won best movie, actor.....but Gravity won more in numbers.

Hello! I am sorry if I mess up your thread, but I had to pop in and say I really feel bad, but I won't be participating this year. This will be the first year in forever I am not doing ballots here or at home.

I was disappointed that I did not get to see THREE of the movies yet, as they are $20 each, and I missed Judas when it was on HBO Max for a short time.

LOVED Octopus Teacher and Crip Camp, and I am about to watch The Mole Agent. LOVE Frances McDormand in anything and Nomadland was a sweet, quiet movie. I did not get to see Father, Marina, or Judas, but I saw all the rest.

Work has been insanely busy, and so has life, but please know I miss you all, and GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! 🙂

Good luck everyone! Viola Davis is probably a better pick for Best Actress but I've been a huge fan of Carey Mulligan since 'Never Let Me Go' (and of course 'Shame').

1 - Nomadland
2 - Chadwick Boseman
3 - Daniel Kaluuya
4 - Carey Mulligan
5 - Youn Yuh-jung
6 - Soul
7 - Nomadland
8 - Ann Roth
9 - Chloe Zhao
10 - My Octopus Teacher
11 - Tenet
12 - Nomadland

Arghh, following along via an Oscars blog which is hilarious, but realised I didn't even see Soul listed under the best animated film - damn it - and of course it was the clear winner in the category. There goes my chances!

Hi Hope, glad to hear you're alive and well!

I can see that I've somehow managed to jag a couple of correct categories already. Exciting! 😂

Looking at the nominations for best original score, there is a chance for a ' multiplier' win.

Da 5 Bloods: Terence Blanchard

Mank :Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

Minari: Emile Mosseri

News of the World: James Newton Howard

Soul: Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won it for ' The Social Network' with David Fincher.

I would love to see James Newton Howard getting it. It's his 10th nomination. I don't know how he keeps sane getting nominations for all the big awards basically every year since decades having won so far one Emmy. half a Grammy and half a Saturn award

I didn't sit through the red carpet or ceremony this year, but the highlights for me
* Gold Crocs at the Oscars (love the idea, but in practice it's not a good look at any time really)
* Maria Bakalova in her white tulle dress - now that's more like it!
* Yuh-Jung Youn speech Best Supporting Actress for Minari
* And this little sweetheart, Alan Kim, doing what little kids do when adults are being boring and taking too long on the red carpet!

Alrighty folks. Here are the winners in each of our categories:

1. Best Picture: NOMADLAND
2. Actor In a Leading Role: ANTHONY HOPKINS, The Father
3. Actor In a Supporting Role: DANIEL KALUUYA, Judas and the Black Messiah
4. Actress In a Leading Role: FRANCES MCDORMAND, Nomadland
5. Actress In a Supporting Role: YUH-JUNG YOUN, Minari
6. Animated Feature Film: SOUL
7. Cinematography: MANK, Erik Messerschmidt
8. Costume Design: MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM, Ann Roth
9. Directing: NOMADLAND, Chloé Zhao
10. Documentary feature: MY OCTOPUS TEACHER
11. Visual Effects: TENET
12. Which film will win the most Oscars? NOMADLAND (3)

I think that makes the leaderboard look like so:

Matthew - 9
CL-Ed - 8
vomvom12 - 6
CL-klaw - 5
barbadosslim93 - 5

So Matthew it is, narrowly beating yours truly whose stabs in the dark turned out to be way better than my "informed" attempts last year!

Congratulations Matthew on taking home the CL Oscar. If you'd like to make a speech, you have 30 seconds before we start playing the orchestra to drown you out.
