2021 Oscars

10 replies • Last post

I thought it passed already, just found out that it will be held on 26th April.

Hopefully, I will get the 1st place again, this year 🙂

Did you go to see the movies in the cinema last year?

What new movies were good for you?

Yes they delayed the ceremony this year due to covid. It is usually in early February. It will be a weird one this year because cinemas have been closed and there have not been many big movies released. It should make it a difficult one to pick in our annual Oscars competition.

When I saw the topic, I also thought that the event had passed. I saw a few movies last year in the cinema, but pretty sure none of them would be nominated.

I've only been able to watch a few trailers so far, but it seems like quite a light selection this year. It's missing those typically prestigious heavy-weight entries.

'Nomadland' seems like the most compelling nominee (it's a big favorite to win Best Picture) so I'll probably watch that one. And I'll watch anything from A24 ('Minari').

For movies, I have to say that I'm loving HBO Max. I have seen more new release movies through that service than I would normally go to in person. My Oscar for Best Picture is Godzilla vs Kong. I know its not eligible for this upcoming Oscars, but it should win.

Are you saying that Godzilla vs Kong is better than Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus?

Oh wow, just went through all the nominations and realised I don't know any of the movies this year. Usually I had seen at least some of nominees.

I'm not just saying it, I'm preaching it. OG Kaiju for the win!

That they were held during a virus and raised the diversity flag higher than ever before are two things that people will remember about this year's Academy Awards. It is the first time two women have been nominated for Best Director. Earlier, there has never been a Best Director nomination for a woman of color. Chloe Zhao is the first. Yuh-Jung Youn is the first South Korean to be nominated for an Academy Award, and he is also the first to win. He is the first Asian-American actor nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work in the movie. For the first time, a film made entirely by black people was nominated for a Best Picture award. I'm sure there are many records set regarding how diverse the city was. That is great, in my opinion. But what do we see after we get past the "meta-story of diversity" that will be the theme of this year's Academy Awards? My picture is of a shallow pool. This year's collection didn't make me want to look at it like the previous ones did for me.
