Cheesy 80's Movies

30 replies • Last post

I am a 90's kid, although I was born in 1984. I have a brief recollection of 80's movies as a 4-5 year old, as they were obviously some of the first movies I've seen. Somehow my parents let me watch Robocop (a major lapse on their part), and I also watched movies like Red Dawn.

I've gotten into a kick of watching cheesy 80's action movies recently. Last night I watched Bloodsport for the first time since I was like 11, and a few days beforehand I watched Big Trouble in Little China.

I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend me some 80's cheesy movies. I want action. I want political incorrectness. I want that 80's synth music.

What do you got?

In 80s, here, people fell for American movies and Hong Kong movies. We didn't really have any other choices, then 🙂

I got Saint Elmo's Fire, that you probably know or already saw, and that I barely remember in fact.

But, I love one OST from this moive : Man In Motion.

I never knew any meaning of this song, back then, but I was crazy for this song, don't know why 🙂

And, recently, this song was revived in Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse.

I was impressed at this song in this movie, while watching in a nearby cinema.

Tango and Cash popped into my mind Slim, not sure if it's the one you're looking for but even if not, it's a good movie, ok . . . . Sort of good. .Ish lol
Beverly Hills Cop, all 3 of them, maybe the Police Academy movies lol.
Try this one, House part 2, although it's more of a horror than action I'd say it's an action horror movie.

Used to love the street warrior and kung fu movies from the 80's like The Last Dragon, The Warriors, Bronx Warriors.
Remember crapping myself watching the horrors. I still think they're better then most of the junk horrors these days! Halloween, Friday the 13th, Hellraiser movies there were some real mindbenders back then or maybe it was coz I was a kid 😨

For major cheese and political incorrectness...what about National Lampoon's Vacation series? I don't remember much of them (I can't stand Chevy Chase) but they are full of 80s caricatures of men, women and kids, really bad jokes and scenes that just would not fly in this day and age. But probably offers lots of laughs and groans in each measure.

For 80s action cheese the first thing that springs to mind for me are a load of Arnie and Stallone movies. I'm not sure if all of these are from the 80s but here goes, along with a chunk of cheese if I know they are extra cheesy. I've excluded really good movies like Die Hard, Aliens, Terminator etc.

Arnie:
The Running Man 🧀🧀🧀
Conan the Barbarian 🧀🧀🧀
Commando 🧀🧀
Red Heat 🧀🧀
Total Recall 🧀

Stallone:
Cobra 🧀🧀🧀
Rocky IV (the one with Dolph Lundgren) 🧀🧀🧀
Rambo (part 2) 🧀🧀🧀
Tango & Cash 🧀🧀🧀

Others:
Escape from New York
Airwolf
Beverley Hills Cop
Highlander
Kickboxer (Van Damme)
Mad Max series (I reckon #2 is the best)
Top Gun

But I think that maybe you're more after these ones that are so cheesy and so bad you might think they are good:
American Ninja series 🧀🧀🧀
Missing in Action (Chuck Norris) 🧀🧀🧀
Roadhouse (Patrick Swayze) 🧀🧀🧀
Big Trouble in Little China 🧀🧀🧀
Megaforce 🧀🧀🧀
Masters of the Universe (Dolph Lundgren as He-Man!) 🧀🧀🧀
Death Wish series (Charles Bronson) 🧀🧀🧀
Delta Force series 🧀🧀🧀

Ok I admit it. Its quite sad that I was able to pull all that from the top of my head!

YES! YES!! YESSSS!!!! This is what I wanted. Oh man what a watch list!

Thank you to everyone else as well. I have actually written all of these down in my notebook to watch.

Klaw, I actually hate Chevy Chase, too. He ruins every film I watch with him in it.

WaroftheGods: Police Academy is one of my first exposures to boobs! I remember rewinding the bonfire party scene more times that I can count. It's probably worn out on the VHS tape.

Mattl: The Last Dragon looks very interesting. That's actually at the top of my list here to watch!

The original Critters was a good cheesy movie. Hard to beat the cheesy horror movies from the 80's.

Oh yeah I remember watching Critters. It was kind of a Gremlins / E.T. rip-off. Definitely cheesy with plenty of terrible one-liners.

And what about Tremors? It was about giant man eating underground worm things like something out of Dune, which is also worth a watch if you love cheese.

Come on that road trip to Wallyworld in that ugly wood panelled station wagon was iconic! 😂

Indeed you are right - released 1990 according to IMDB. In my defence it was a long time ago and I was close! 😜

Tremors I for sure remember. Did anyone ever see The Wizard? It was basically a giant ad for Nintendo, but starred Fred Savage and had that stupid Nintendo glove.

So much cheese.

The Wizard was awesome. Also pretty much any movie made from 85-90 was cheesy. Especially if they starred young actors. Looking back on it I don't know how some of those movies were even made but I'm glad they were.

I was thinking of some more that you might like. These are more sci-fi than action but maybe of interest:

The Last Starfighter
Time Bandits
Short Circuit
The Philadelphia Experiment
The Thing
The Fly
Brazil
Flight of the Navigator

The Wizard lmao, I watched that movie so many times when I was a kid . I loved that one, reminds me of others now. Not so much cheesy action flicks but definitely memorable for me were
Little Monsters
Howard The Duck
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
CL-Ed mentioned Masters of the Universe above lol Live Action He-man it was suppose to be wasn't it? Not sure when the Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles first released a movie. I could recite every single word in parts 1 and 2 back then lol

Home Alone
Uncle Buck
Goodfellas
Arachnophobia
Total Recall

Really the list goes on and on

Seeing as we're on the topic of cheese, do you remember the cheesy fight at the Vanilla Ice concert in one of those movies? I wish I could forget it! 😂

Another decent 80s action movie I remembered is The Untouchables with Kevin Costner and Sean Connery.

Just thought of another cheesy but good 80's movie - Clue. Even if you never played the game before it's still a fun movie to watch.

Oh yeah I watched Clue in school a bunch. Funny story: My friend and I were sophomores in high school and we got put into sophomore level math in a classroom with a bunch of seniors that needed the class in order to graduate. The teacher didn't really care to be there, so he'd teach for five minutes and then pop in a video tape for us to watch.

Unfortunately, there were like five tapes and the teacher wouldn't rent any. Our selection was Clue, Godzilla (1998), Clueless, Hocus Pocus, and Jungle 2 Jungle with Tim Allen. Needless to say, I got to know all very well.

Oh, I watched Roadhouse with my 11 year old this past weekend. Great flick that I haven't seen in a very long time and on Ed's list. My boy loved the action and he also loved the boobage that was on the screen. He looked at me like: "You're letting me watch this?!?"

Great times.

Geez yeah Roadhouse definitely isn't for kids. I'm pretty sure it was R rated here (18+). His eyes would have been popping out of his head! 😲😲😲

Vice Versa, The Princess Bride, The Wizard, Little Monsters and of course The Wonder Years. Fred Savage had a nice little run in the late 80's/early 90's.

Boy Meets World was a sitcom that followed Fred's younger brother Ben. It was more of a comedy, but better structured than Saved By The Bell. The first season or two are the best, but it's worth a watch if you can find it on Disney+. There was also a spinoff that was up for a couple years called Girl Meets World, which was launched this past decade.
