Any Audiobook Fans?

9 replies • Last post

Hey all, wondering if anyone here is a fan of audiobooks and whether they have any that they recommend. I work from home so a large portion of my day is spent listening to podcasts or audiobooks. I am wrapping up a rather disappointing book and am looking to make sure I don't burn one of my Audible credits this month. I've listened to some great Star Wars books (here's looking at you vomvom), a lot of science fiction, and some history books.

Whatcha got for me?

Long before, I bought an Audiobook, Winning by Jack Welch. At that time, I thought that it would be good for studying English too. I don't remember that I hear and read it to the end, though 🙂

These days, I am thinking about listening radios or podcast more, simply because I think that I feel less tired than watching on TV or Youtube. I feel that Bluelight is harmful 😎

If I buy(or rent) another Audiobook soon, I think that it will be "Becoming" by Michelle Obama 🙂

I think listening to a book by Barack Obama would be a great experience. What an excellent speaker. If he kept up that cadence and such for the length of an audiobook, I'm sure it'd be awesome.

I've wanted to try audiobooks but haven't so far. I feel like it will take far longer to get through than just reading the book. Also I often try to listen to podcasts while I work and what ends up happening is time passes and I've been concentrating on what I am doing and I realise that I can't remember a single thing they said during the past 5 minutes. It's like it all just goes in one ear and straight out the other!

Yes Ed, I have the same problem, only it's with my wife and not a podcast... somehow I can hear what those are trying to say!

I love PKD stories. Which one did you listen to?

If you're expecting Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep to be a lot like Blade Runner you might be disappointed. It's similar but it's one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book in my humble opinion.

Michelle Obama's Becoming was a great read, very inspirational and quite frank. The insight into their family and politics really makes you wonder at the stark contrast between the Obamas and the Trumps.

As a family we listened to the entire Harry Potter series, everyone loved it. It was read by Stephen Fry who did an awesome job, could listen to him all day!

Thought of a couple more that I've listed to:

If you like a crime/mystery The Child by Fiona Barton was good. It's set in England and the voices are VERY English, which I didn't mind but some might.

I've also listened to Northern Lights: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. It was a good story and I quite enjoyed the various voices in the audiobook. Don't bother with books 2 and 3 though - at least I didn't enjoy them 🙂

Thanks for the suggestions klaw. I have a new credit coming here in a couple days and I may do Michelle Obama's book. I bet the Harry Potter books would be great too!
