This year sucks

15 replies • Last post

Hey everyone, I'm going to bitch a little bit here. I know we've all had a bad 2020 with everything going on, but for me it's taken a new step.

In addition to possibly having had Covid, being locked down, seeing the police brutality, riots, etc., I found out yesterday that my 91 year old grandma is being put into hospice care. I got the call at 11:30am that she wasn't doing well, and by 12:30pm I was driving the 100 miles down to metro Detroit to say goodbye to her.

We all knew the day was coming, but that doesn't make it much easier. She's definitely on her last bit of time, and was struggling to stay awake, breathe, and form any words. She was able to say "I love you" to my kids, wife, and I, which was nice.

Just everything coupled together is rough, man. 2020 sucks.

We're not halfway through 2020 yet and it's certainly going down as one to remember.

Such sad news about your grandma, Slim. What a woman, getting to 92! My thoughts are with you all as you say your final goodbyes.

Sorry to hear about your loss vomvom12 - while death is obviously inevitable it's so shocking when friends pass at such a young age. A friend of mine passed away from a heart attack in her 40s last year - it's tough for family left behind.

Sad to hear about your friend, man. It's never easy saying goodbye to someone young. Can we skip to 2021? I think it'd be best for everyone!

Also, thanks for the kind words, guys. It all helps. Yesterday she became unresponsive, so I think the end is near. Hopefully she just goes peacefully.

Sorry to hear that man...but I know what's the feeling...my mother past away a couple of years back after having a cancer diagnose and been trough a long lasting surgery...but to be honest I was even relieved when she died..no one should live like that...at least I would of make that choice for my self...if I have the right to make one...at all of course.

Sorry guys didn't meant to bring your mood down...just the things from life I guess...

2020..not my worst year at all so far...but let's remain positive.. : ) ...It still could be..; )...not even in my top3..that's how low the bar is really...

So..keep on going Slim..seems like you've been through a lot this year but if we have to keep the positive attitude...(like everybody suggest lately)...it still could of been a lot worst...; )

Thanks sharpe.

My grandma ended up passing last night surrounded by loved ones at home. All things considered, it's the best case scenario for her.

I decided to write up my feelings on her and thought I'd share them here:

Some of my earliest memories are of time spent with my grandmother, Irene. We'd pick berries in her garden, play Ring Around 'o Rosie, or have her cook up kielbasa because I always "looked hungry".

My grandma was the sweetest lady, who was always thrilled with whatever news I brought her with what was going on in my life. She was always so kind and caring, and she loved showering my kids in hugs and kisses and telling them how proud she was of their accomplishments.

She was also tough. After my grandpa passed in 2012, almost everyone in my family thought she'd join him soon after. They were so attached to one another that it would have been understandable. Somehow, she endured. She traveled. She experienced new things. She made it more than eight years without the person she'd spent the previous 63 years married to. I'm thankful that my kids got to know their great grandmother for a good chunk of their childhood.

My grandma passed away last night at the age of 91. She was fortunate, as she got to go peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones. Hers was a life fully-lived, and I hope that everyone who gets to read this gets a chance to experience and impart the joy that made up a large portion of her life.

I love you grandma, and I already miss you terribly.

😢 Condolences to you and all your family slim.

Your kids were fortunate to know a great-grandparent. I only knew my grandmothers as both grandfathers were gone before I was born.

Thanks for the kind words, Ed, Klaw, and vomvom. It's been a rough few days, but at least she went with her family around her.

We had the funeral yesterday and then got together at her house afterwards for a cookout with the vast majority of her family (5 kids, 8 grandkids, 5 great grandkids, and spouses). May be one of the last times we get to be all together at that house, but it was a nice touch and something she would have loved to have seen.

O, that's harsh Ed, My two grandfathers who both past away many years ago were the best people I've ever known...still feeling lucky to ever known them...sometimes I felt that's been a more special connection even to than that with my parents.

'Slim, what a beautiful tribute to your grandmother. In this day and age, too many are dying alone, and I am at least glad she was able to have her loved ones with her as she passed.

Grandmothers are so special, and it sounds as if you will have many happy memories to cling to in the days ahead.

No matter how old they are, we feel they will be with us forever, and it is so difficult to lose our loved ones, no matter the age.

Much sympathy to you and your family.

Please take care.

I just got back from my friend's mother's funeral this morning. She had battled cancer on and off for over 40 years, so she was one tough grandmother. There was some comfort that at least she was surrounded by her family and people who loved her when her time came.

Thank you, Hope.

Ed, I'm sorry to hear that your friend's mother passed. That's a rough battle, and I hope I never have to deal with something like cancer. I couldn't imagine how tough you have to be to go through that.
