2020 Oscars competition. Pick the winners and win CLchips!

47 replies • Last post

Ben Stiller in Avatar makeup

Hi everyone. Once again in 2020 we are running our annual Academy Awards tipping competition, giving you the chance to win some CLchips to spend in our shop.

You can win yourself up to 200 CLchips by predicting who will win at the 92nd annual Oscars, which will be held on Sunday February 9 at 5pm U.S. PST.

The rules are simple:
1. Entry is free to all Casino Listings members. Register here if you aren't a member yet.
2. Nominate your winner in each of the categories below in a reply to this thread. The person who picks the most winners scoops the pool of 100 CLchips.
3. If there is a tie we will split the pool evenly.
4. If someone gets every single category right, we'll double the prize to 200 CLchips.
5. Entries close at the beginning of the Oscars ceremony on Sunday February 9, 2020, 5pm U.S. PST.
6. You can enter multiple times if you change your mind, but only your last dated post will be used as your entry.

We have expanded our list of categories this year and you now have 11 categories that you need to pick from plus our traditional bonus question at the end to make it 12 in all.

Good luck film fans!

It's an interesting collection of nominations this year, especially the best picture category. There doesn't seem to be a standout obvious winner there. I really liked Parasite but I have my doubts that a Korean language film will be picked to win the main award. And that list of best supporting actors is like a who's who of male Hollywood superstars. This year should be a good one!

I keep hearing all this talk about how Adam Sandler was snubbed for his acting in the movie Uncut Gems, and didnt even get a nomination. So I found it on Netflix and watched the whole thing through. I thought he did excellent, and what an amazing movie. It's pretty amazing when and actor/actress goes completely out of their comfort zone.

Oh, yeah, I have been waiting for this competition in CL 🙂
I saw several movies, The Irishman, Joker, Once upon a time in Hollywood, Parasite, Toy Story 4, etc.

To me, The Irishman was like a Forrest Gump Mafia version 🙂
In Forrest Gump, there are some famous lines like Run Forrest Run.
Or Life is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

But, in The Irishman, you will hear 😂😂😂

I am concerned.
I am a little concerned.
I am more than a little concerned.

Once upon a time in Hollywood was a good moive. I don't really know much of history of Holloywood, but I could felt that the movie was full of famous events and happenings, and the incidents, etc.

Well, Joker was very good. But, I think that it falls a bit short to The Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy by Robert De Niro.

I will make my entry soon 🙂

Yeah, I understand it. The Irishman and Once upon a time in Hollywood were a bit boring in the middle. But, I think that both are still good.

I think that Parasite would be good to your movie taste 🙂

I really need to get out more - I have only seen 2 films up for best picture nomination.

Quote:

I didn't like it much either. Typical Tarantino film with crazy, over the top violent scenes (unnecessary IMO). I watched this one on the plane so may have affected my appreciation for it.

The other movie I've seen is Little Women. This is one of my all time favourite books and and I love the 1949 version of the movie (which starred Elizabeth Taylor at Amy) so I really wanted to like this one too. But for me, Greta Gerwig made a few too many tweaks to make the story appeal to modern sensibilities - the Professor is played by a handsome, young French sounding guy for goodness sakes! In the book he's supposed to be an older German fellow who is intelligent rather than good looking which makes Jo's interest in him all the more genuine.

Uncut Gems was completely snubbed and The Lighthouse deserves so many more nominations!

Since the nominations are totally underwhelming this year, and so difficult to predict, the best strategy would simply be to mirror top sportsbook picks. But I'm going to keep things interesting with a set of ultra-high risk predictions:

1. Best Picture
Joker

2. Actor In a Leading Role
Joaquin Phoenix

3. Actor In a Supporting Role
Joe Pesci

4. Actress In a Leading Role
Renée Zellweger

5. Actress In a Supporting Role
Laura Dern

6. Animated Feature Film
Toy Story 4

7. Cinematography
1917

8. Costume Design
Little Women

9. Directing
The Irishman

10. Documentary Feature
American Factory

11. Visual Effects
1917

12. Extra special question
1917

Yes it is very good, and has some crazy twists in the tale. I saw it with English subtitles. I don't think there is a dubbed version and I prefer subtitles anyway because I can't stand the mouths not matching the words when they dub movies - unless we're talking 1970-80s Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan kung fu movies which have the funniest dubs due to the "so bad its good" voice acting.

Netflix has been spamming Uncut Gems at me every time I switch it on this past week so I guess I better add it to my list.

Uncut Gems is my favorite movie of the year.

Parasite shares a lot of interesting class struggle themes with Joker...seems fitting given the state of US politics. Although I really enjoyed Parasite, I don't think it's competitive in the Best Picture category.

I have $100 on Parasite to win Best Film Editing where it has a better chance.

ok that seems to be very different ...dubbed movies with german language are almost synced verry well
but i agre if a movie is synced verry bad then i would be much better to watch the original with
subtitles

I was about to watch the Irishman but after your review in two words 😛 I'll snub it.

Apparently you're a movie maniac (certainly a lot more aware than me) so I'll fully trust your judgement on it and the rest of the Oscar contenders..for me it would be a complete guesswork like...every year to be honest.

hahaha...thanks for your trust buddy but please don't
do that ! because that is just my very own personal opinion and it's possible
that it doesn't match yours at all.
i think there is nothing where opinions and perceptions can diverge like films
and tv shows. my advice...if anything about a film or series has sparked your interest
or your curiosity, then watch it and decide for yourself whether you like it or not.
otherwise you may miss your personal favorite movie.

It was so hard to stay away from Scorsese and his gang, but they wore me out.Love all of the actors but they suffer from overexposure in all those films.Guess Leo was busy that day. Nicholson would have been good in those roles.

He had a great speech last night at the Independent Spirit Awards. If you can find it online, it is worth checking out. Uncut Gems was a wild anxiety-inducing ride with never a dull moment!
