Amish Kids Arrested for DUI

25 replies • Last post

So, I was going to put this in the small town crime thread, but decided to pop it up in its own topic. About 20 minutes from me a group of four teenage Amish kids were pulled over for drinking and driving their horse buggy. Supposedly they were throwing beer out the buggy while going down the street.

I swear, if I haven't seen some crazy Amish stuff in the past, I'd think this was made up.

Today we also picked a new puppy up from an Amish farm. The people were really nice and had vaccines and everything for the dog, but man, it's a strange culture shift when you go out there. They don't have electricity, and the wife was hanging her wet clothes on a line in the freezing cold. They also had a skinned deer hanging from their barn roof where the pups were living (its their fridge) and the mom pup was outside chewing on deer intestines while the dad pup was chasing cows around.

Crazy stuff!

Happy to hear you and your family have gotten a new puppy, nothing replaces the love of a lost one, but this new one will surely ease the pain.

I grew up in the country close to a few Hutterite colonies. Although they use electricity and other modern day technologies, they do have a different way of life and as well as their clothing and language . I agree with once you step into their yards, it's like going back in time almost lol. They would stop by our place a few times a year with a bunch of pies, eggs, and freshly picked fruit as well as a bunch of ice cream pails full of berries to freeze for later use.
Your post here brought back a flood of great memories growing up, thanks slim ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh man, I've heard about the Hutterite colony in Montana. I'm assuming they're probably related to the group living up where you were? The thing I saw with them was interesting, as they seemed quasi-Amish, but had stuff like ATVs to go out and traverse the land.

I'm also glad to hear about your new puppy, I'm sure he will feel loved and cared for ๐Ÿ™‚

Regarding the Amish kids, it doesn't surprise me to be honest. I've seen some television shows about the Amish life (yes, probably most of them are scripted) but still it shows how different they live and how they "lose it" if they have a chance of freedom. Some can't handle it and go back where they're shunned for leaving. I can't relate at all and I'm glad.

There are so many colonies in the western prairies I couldnt even give a close guess lol. Believe it or not slim, now a days they are actually using those ATV's to heard cattle from one pasture to another . A few horses are there but the machines are doing most of the work.
I've been on a few cattle drives, but it was always just horses we used, never any ATV's in the mix.

I imagine an ATV will get the job done pretty well!

But how are they surviving the cold weather? Just like stone ages with leather clothes and some inside fire? Might be a silly question but I really can't imagine how that life feels like.

My personal opinion, they do more harm than good. With horses, its quiet for the most part. The cows dont get all worked up with horses walking next to them. I've only been on a few short drives, but I would imagine those longer ones you need to worry about tools in case of a breakdown, and enough fuel to get the job done. With a horse, a watering hole and patches of grass along the way is all you need.
I'm no cowboy, and these days, more and more people are replacing horses with quads. So they must be getting the job done

The Amish that live up here have a couple of ways they keep warm. Some have propane tanks to supply heating, but there are others that are more strict and they straight up chop wood and use fireplaces to keep warm.

The different communities have different rules about how hardcore they are when it comes to shunning technology. Sometimes you'll see them driving a tractor and sometimes you'll see them plowing their fields with a horse. You also sometimes see them shopping at Walmart and they hitch a ride into town with someone.

Hopefully at least the horse has been sober enough๐Ÿ˜‰

Yeah a strange culture as you said there slim but I respect them for sticking to the way of life they're forced to live (for those who follow the canons anyway) with all the modern day ease being just so close and in the same time unavailable for them...it's tough I guess....especially for the young people.

What's with the photo in the newspaper article you linked? It makes them all look like the hulk or Thanos from the Marvel movies. Anyway this story reminds me of this documentary I once saw about the Amish...

Ed, you would be shocked to see firsthand how they live. I was there last week and it was crazy. Hanging wet clothes to dry when its 20 degrees Fahrenheit out is extreme. So was seeing the skinned deer hanging in the barn where puppies were living.

I guess you have to let the water freeze on the clothes then you can scrape it right off. Though it doesn't sound like these Amish youths are living the holy life. Careful or they will end up roasting in hell.

I reckon Amish Paradise is one of Weird Al's best. The best bit of that clip is at the end where he walks along singing the song while everything around him is going backwards. He must have had to learn and sing the song in reverse while walking backwards so that it would look like he's walking forwards when the video was played in reverse. Genius.

Speaking of Weird Al, have you seen his White and Nerdy music video? It's a classic. Up there with Amish Paradise IMHO.

YES, this is perfect hahaha, I use to know every word to this song and would often pull a full on Amish Paradise sing/slur off at parties vs whoever else lol. Ah, the stupid memories that I get reminded of randomly here and there lol. Thanks for this one CL-Ed, this was a welcome flashback of some good times in my past lol

I can't even sing normally..while I'm walking forward๐Ÿ˜‚...100% has something to do with my musicality...and coordination๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Thanks guys. Yeah, she's something. She thinks she's the boss already. She bullies our 85 pound black lab around the house, barking at him until he moves out of HER spot. I'm sure we'll see even more of her bossiness as she gets older. Our other corgi was bossy like that too... must run in the bloodline.
