Popcorn at the movies

Its time we started a new movies thread to discuss the movies we're watching.

Today I'll start with a biggie. I was fortunate enough to score a free ticket to the new Star Wars movie - The Rise of Skywalker. Without spoiling anything I can give this mini review...

They should call this movie Star Wars Bill & Ted Edition or maybe Finn and Rey's Excellent Adventure. I say this because every time someone was saved only seconds from dying, or every time they needed to find someone or something, whatever they needed was there just when and where they needed it right in the nick of time. I was reminded of the scene in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure where they pull keys and guns out of thin air by saying that in the future they would go back in time and place those items right when and where they needed them. It happens so often I lost count.

There was loads of action, even by Star Wars standards. I think the script writer must have ADHD or something because the movie jumps from one intense scene to the other so quickly you hardly have time to comprehend it all. The plot is very thin and there are not too many surprises but that said it was fun and entertaining. It is funny and sad and corny and all the usual Star Wars things, including inconsistent and improbable. Best not to think too hard about how and why a lot of things happen otherwise you will find a lot of plot holes in everything. It ties up a lot of loose ends and hopefully they can leave it be now, though that is probably asking too much of the suits at Disney.

I give it a 3 out of 5.

I think that based on your suggestion Ed, I'll watch the second Jumanji movie this week. I was a major fan of the older one and it always gave me the chills so I hope it won't be too disappointing.

Anyone seen Uncut Gems? It’s the perfect movie for this forum - lots of gambling elements. It’s seriously good.

Oh that seems like a cool movie! Definitely will take a closer look. I recently saw the movie about Blackjack with Kevin Spacey- liked it, but one again proved me I am not a fan of blackjack and can't imagine counting cards.

Yeah that's the one I meant. I mean it was ok as you said, but I had never seen it before and I liked some of the actors. Definitely not my favorite movie though.

Agreed, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was haunting. The joker left me a bit traumatised and I actually loved the new Star Wars !

What is the last movie you guys saw at an actual cinema? It's been months since I went, last one was Maleficent and before that the Lion King. Planning to go at the end of the month to see this movie about aliens and starring Kristen Stewart.

I know its old but I watched BlacKkKlansman on the weekend. It was really good, and particularly funny to see these imbeciles being made fun of, but sad at the same time knowing how much of that stupidity is probably still going on today.

My favorite movie of this year: JoJo Rabbit

I also liked Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I still have to see 1917. Has anyone seen it?

Oh, and Uncut Gems! What an anxiety- provoking kinetic wild ride! Very well done.

These days, I actually watch more TV than movies, and I think TV IS the new movies. 🙂

I am watching Hunters (jury still out). Stephen King's The Outsider (it is okay) and the best of all, Better Call Saul is back! YAY! 🙂

i think this is a premiere for me ... i haven't seen a singel film last year that i really liked !
i count parasite and uncut gems to last year though i could see both just last week...i
had high expectations that were unfortunately not met.
parasite had a pretty good start but after an hour it got annoying and I didn't
even watch it to the end. uncut gems was unfortunately also only ok for me...

but no wow moment...nothing and compared to the many great tv shows i saw last year, it
is really disappointing. if I only think of the final season of mr robot...that feels like wow !!
that was such a crazy ride. the hole story is a true masterpiece and my entertainment highlight last year

I think with the dominance of all the streaming services and relatively cheap high quality TV screens, surround sound etc the attraction of the cinemas is starting to fall. Now we can binge watch much longer stories through TV episodes and most of the time you don't have to wait half a year to see it all. So the movies are becoming more about the blockbusters and silly gimmicks like 3D and less about the stories. They can't make something as complex and nuanced as Mr Robot at the movies because they don't have the time to tell the entire story.

A while ago I was reading some history about the area where I live and I found that my suburb used to have two cinemas back in the 1950s, and most surrounding suburbs had one. Now they are all either demolished or converted for other uses and we mostly only have the huge cinema chains in a few busy locations around the city. It turns out that once home TV sets became affordable in the 50s and 60s the local cinema numbers all plummeted. It happened again for a bit in the 1980s, and they think it was due to home video boxes and rentals. So I wonder if we are in the middle of a similar decline now.

I found this page on cinema attendance in Australia and it shows pretty clearly that people have been going to the cinema fewer times a year, and it has been on a downward trend since the mid 1990s. If you click the "Age Profile" link on the left you can see that young kids are going less often and older people who grew up with the cinema are going more. I'd say that's not a long term trend that will make a cinema manager happy.

I've been trying to watch some sci-fi movies lately. I've seen the following:

Prospect - This is a low budget but well made sci-fi movie about a father and daughter who go to an isolated moon to mine gems. It is gritty and dirty, kind of like the original Alien in style (but no alien monsters in the movie). It gets a bit violent in parts. I really enjoyed it, and it shows you don't need a budget of hundreds of millions to make a convincing story.

Ad Astra - Brad Pitt is an astronaut sent on a mission to out near Jupiter to find his father who he presumed was dead. It is slow paced but beautifully filmed, more like 2001 than Star Wars. Definitely not for action junkies.

Upgrade - Another very good low budget movie. It is about a guy who is attacked and paralysed, while his wife is murdered. He is offered an AI implant that lets him use his body again so he goes looking for revenge. This one is very violent and gory in parts, and has a pretty twisted ending.

good choice Ed
i watched "prospect" and "upgrade" as well and especially "upgrade shows that
low budget doesn't mean that the film has to be bad. i realy liked "prospect" as well the
the story was a bit thin but I really liked its look and feel of it.

i didn't saw ad astra so far but i sounds like that this one is for me.

here are a few that I can recommend:

timecrimes a unique low budget timetravell flick

10 cloverfield lane don't get confused by the title it has nothing to do with
cloverfield or the cloverfield paradox

annihilation slow but pretty good

Good picks. I've seen Annihilation which was ok, not as spectacular as a few reviews made it out to be though. I have Timecrimes on my queue to watch.
