Worst Job Ever?

I was thinking today about work, and how I'm so much happier now that I get to do something that I like for a living than I was doing awful jobs. I'm curious as to what jobs you've had in the past that you think are the worst.

I'll start!

When the Great Recession hit, the ISP that I worked for went under. I lost my job and didn't want to be on unemployment. Unfortunately, good jobs were nearly impossible to find, so I decided to take the first one I could find. This was working inside a polycrystalline silicon plant clean room. Basically, the factory generated the silicon from scratch using chemicals and what not, where they were eventually broken up and shipped out to companies around the world for use in solar panels, computer chips, etc.

My role in this was to go into a clean room with about 100 other people and break the silicon into small pieces and bag it up. How do you do this? With a hammer. Literally, this job was breaking pieces of what amounted to rock into smaller pieces. I was like Fred Flintstone. It was terrible. The shifts were 12 hours long, the silicon was razor sharp, and you fogged up due to your body being basically sealed in these clean suits and the ambient temperature in the room being less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

After a few weeks, I was promoted to what they called an "Etch Operator". I worked with four other guys in a segregated room, as this was considered to be dangerous work. We would see the silicon go into a bath of hydrofluoric acid, where it would have the surface eaten away. We'd then have to take it out of these baskets, let it cool, and then bag it. There was real danger with the acid, as if it got onto your skin it would burn you, and even pull the calcium out of your bones toward the skin!

I worked really hard to get out of that job. I did 12 hour days, came home and ate dinner, then worked for a few hours at night at another gig. That eventually got to the point where I was making as much doing that as working in the plant. My last day at the plant was when I was walking down a hallway where the acid robots (Burt and Ernie) were. As I was pushing a cart with four layers of gloves and a plastic gauntlet on, I heard a pop and hiss. I looked over to see a bunch of HF acid oozing onto the floor right by my feet. It was at that point where I said, "Screw this" and left!

So what was the worst job you had? What horror stories came from it?

I dunno guys, I think I'd prefer the crime scene cleaning to this job:

I did that many years ago when younger. It wasn't so bad, just sitting around all day answering phones for an insurance company.

There are many worse ways to earn some money, though I guess it could be real bad if you're working for some criminals or scammers like those poor Indian guys who have to cold call people and pretend to be "fixing their windows".

There are offices full of guys in India who call people in Europe and America pretending to work for Microsoft. They convince people that they have malware on their computer and get them to pay to fix the computer remotely. Its all a scam.

Wow, can't believe some people have been falling for that...but obviously there's large enough market for the "Indian Microsoft department"

Well, tough luck for you....but I guess that could be said for every job you didn't got a paycheck in the end.

I remember back in the 90's I've had a full time job for months and I was paid like 45 Euros a month in today's money...don't know even how I've survived back then.

OMG my wife's grandmother went on an hour-long rant step by step, word by word, about how she got called by one of these Windows people, and how she "got them". Part of me thinks she just wanted someone to talk to and spent forever talking to this guy, only to tell him too bad when he wanted an iTunes gift card.

I don't feel bad for these scammers, but man I felt bad for myself having to listen to this story and pretending to be interested.

Big respect to grandma-in-law! There are online communities of people who deliberately try to waste the time of the scammers so they can't scam others. Maybe she has found her true calling.

This is a difficult question. I've had many bad jobs over the years but probably one of the worst ones was a retail job with over snobby customers, bad management and a terrible uniform combined with minimum pay and 12 hour shifts. Makes you stronger as a person though.

Might be, I don't like working with people so much trying to sell clothes so in that sense it's one of my worst jobs I had. Also I had to wear a name tag that said "Maria" (not my name) and the outfit made me look like Im about to go out in the field to milk some cows. Now try to go well an outfit looking and feeling like that 😂

I used to work at a teddy bear store, and it was some of the most insane retail I've ever worked in. Black Friday crowds would go for hundreds of feet, and the rich snobs were the WORST. I totally feel where you're coming from, blck.

Honestly these retail jobs I had made me learn one important life lesson - never treat people in retail/food industry with disrespect. The job is already hard and people with bad attitude just make the day even worse.

Ed, now I’m disappointed! It could have made it so much better haha. Thankfully tho it wasn’t a dress but a bad mix of a shirt and pants but still quite on point.

Had plenty of crappy jobs when i was younger. From pothand for the army - as a civvy working the outdoor kitchens in tents. Washing huge pots and pans you could literally climb into x20 per meal for 600 to 1000 troops.
Discharging fish from ship holds. Working in the depths of a frozen smelly ship for hours usually 12 upto 40hrs on call anytime. Just moving bins and bins of fish onto trucks sometimes multiple ships one after another. Freakin killer after 3 days/60+ hours on barely any sleep. Smelling nasty for days. Can't believe i did that shit for months off and on for 3 years. Was great money tho but not for the weak.
Can think of a couple more like bouncing every weekend or throwing hay bails as a teenager, pressing wool bails.
Always been a physical guy but then i had kids and had to stay local with a family so living the good life 9-5 now
