Can We Start a New MOVIE thread?

28 replies • Last post

Hello Everyone!

Since TV shows have gotten so much better these days, I am not watching as many movies, but I still do watch, and I am still crazy about the Oscars, etc. I thought maybe we could start a new movie thread to go along with our good TV shows thread.

You can post old favorites, classics, new releases, whatever you enjoy watching, good OR bad.

I especially like psychological thrillers, and I find GOOD ones are difficult to come by - I am a bit fussy about my movies. A recent VERY GOOD movie in this category, starring the lovely Jessica Chastain, is Miss Sloane. LOTS of twists and turns and, really, a very smart, well-done political psychological thriller.

I also like Crime stories, a GOOD, well-done comedy, and some of the better dramas. I do like a FEW horror movies, but I don't like gore for the sake of gore, violence for the sake of violence. I like a good plot.

I watched an interesting horror/psychological thriller called The Invitation that was very spooky.

A few more recent watches before I go (but you KNOW I will be back here later, lol) are:

We Have to Talk About Kevin (very well done)

and

Get Out.

Miss Sloane is on Netflix, and the next two are on Netflix and Get Out I watched on Exodus: Kodi.

What good movies have you seen recently?

What are some of your favorite movies of all time?

I haven't watched a lot of movies lately because the weather has been nice, and I usually save that for when it starts to turn nasty. I have Alien: Covenant and some others in my queue though.

My favorite movies of all time are a huge scattershot, and I think it's almost better to do them by genre. Still, my all time faves are: Pulp Fiction, Ghostbusters, Empire Strikes Back, Jurassic Park, and Shaun of the Dead. I'm sure I could throw some more in there too!

I'll let you know if I see anything new and great!

I agree re the to vs movies these days. but I've been on a bit of a sci fi binge recently and have seen these ones:

Alien covenant - 3/5 ok movie, much better than Prometheus but a bit predictable and not in the same league as the original.
Passengers - about some people that wake up early on a 120 year space voyage which they were supposed to sleep through. Despite the setting it's a bit of a chick flick and there's some nonsensical plot threads so only 3/5 from me.
Life - awful Alien wannabe movie. 2/5
Europa report - low budget story about scientists travelling to Europa, a moon of Jupiter. This one is quite good given its obviously low budget. Quite realistic and mostly plausible which makes it very interesting without me saying any more to give it away. 4/5

I'm looking forward to the new blade runner which I thought would be awful but looks promising in the preview, though hopefully there's not so much guns and action as is implied.

Oh I am gonna love this threas,! I am such a movie junkie. Last movies I saw were Personal Shopper - strange drama thriller with Kristen Stewart, loved it and an Italian movie which name I don't recall but later will add. One of all time favorites - Stoker, Les Amoures Imaginaires and American Beauty.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

Mine is still To Kill a Mockingbird, which also happens to be my favorite book of all time. The book is already better, but in this case, the movie was just as good IMHO.

I recently rewatched Alfred Hitchcock's Read Window, which is a fun movie with the great Jimmy Stewart.

One of the rare exceptions where the movie is better than the book (novel in this case) is the Shawshank Redemption I think, part me Mr. Stephen King but the movie is better I think and I don't know if you can name it your all time favourite movie just like that, but this one is pretty close to be mine's.

I don't think I have one favorite movie but I love Havier movies (he's a french Canadian actor and movie maker). And one of my all time favorites is Stoker. I am not usually a person that likes to re-watch things ut I've seen this movie many times.

Get Out was good and interesting, but not really Class A movie, as I think.

Miss Sloane was great !!! Smile

I really enjoyed Get Out. Surprising it was done by the comedian Peele from Key and Peele. I like that it was different from other horror movies. Definitely kept my attention.

I also enjoyed Miss Sloane - great line!

I watched Baby Driver last night, and I was a little disappointed. I mean, it was just okay. The crime pieces were not unique in the least and I had no idea it would turn out to be a sappy love story. lol One of the "bad guys," played by John Ham (Mad Men) turned into almost a cartoon character. The opening scene is beyond cool, and the younger actor, who plays Baby, is pretty good, but too sappy for me. Also features Jamie Fox and Kevin Spacey.

Speaking of love stories, I really DO want to see The Big Sick.

Just saw the comedy Girls Most Likely - but it was disappointing in general, funny at times but quite ordinary movie really, maybe not so bad idea after all but a poor execution and I don't mean by the actors.

Watched two, very unique and "quirky" movies this weekend. I didn't know much about either before I watched, and I am not going to give anything away for you, either, because the less you know about them before watching, the better.

Good Time - rented on Redbox
and
Bigsby Bear - rented on Amazon

Very nice, Hope. I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last night and found it very funny. Other movies I've seen recently are Lego Ninjago (with my kids), The Foreigner (good Jackie Chan movie), Thor: Ragnarok (very funny), and Daddy's Home 2 (awful, also saw with my kids).

I got this Moviepass thing that lets me see a movie a day for $10 a month. It's really worth it if you go to see more than two movies a month. It's gotten me back in the habit of going to the theater as well .

Not my favorite but an interesting movie I haven't yet had the chance to finish it would be death note, it's different then a lot of movies out there. I have made it through about half hour then never had the chance to finish it.

It seems like a lot of fun, the last few months I had no chance to see the movie, justice league is the movie I was waiting for but have not had time to visit theaters until today, hopefully there is a good time to enjoy the entertainment, because my brain is in turmoil and need something which is refreshing Silent

I'm Netflix all the way lol, it's very inexpensive, and they're always adding new shows and movies so it never gets boring. Hockey season now in full swing, I'm a huge NHL fan, I don't get to watch as often with kids now in my life, but I'm hoping as they get older, they will be fans and watch with daddy lol . I cut the cable off when it's not hockey season, Netflix is a year around deal for our household lol

The detective Hercule Poirot is like Hamlet dealing with a vengeance murder before The Last Supper.

Just watched What Happened to Monday on Netflix. An interesting Sci-Fi, Dystopian Future movie. Not gonna win an Academy Award, but definitely worth a watch if you have Netflix.

I am still waiting to see Molly's Game and this:

I took the kids to see the new Star Wars movie on the weekend. Its typical Star Wars kind of fun that I enjoyed (without taking it too seriously) aside from one awful scene where ...

Small possible spoiler here
... a major character does what I'm calling "the Mary Poppins in space" ...
spoiler over

This thing that happens goes far beyond the limits of credibility, even for Star Wars. It is IMHO the stupidest thing ever seen in a Star Wars movie - Jar Jar Binks, Ewoks, Hayden Christensen, and that annoying little kid in the prequels included.
