Small Town Crime

Okay guys: I live in a small town (Midland, Michigan, population 40,000 or so) and sometimes I'm shocked by the things that make the crime blotter here. I have opted to post doozies from the local newspaper for you to giggle at, which is in contrast to a lot of the violence and shocking crimes that take place in other cities within a two hour travel time from me (Saginaw, Flint, and Detroit... all of which are very violent).

With that said, here's the highlights from today's paper!

4:12 a.m. - A deputy responded to a Coleman residence for a report of noise outside the house being caused by an unknown source. The deputy determined the large cat on the roof was the likely source of the noise. No one was seen anywhere near the residence.

11:44 a.m. - Someone reported two loose calves on West Midland-Gratiot Co Line Road in Porter Township. The calves were not located. A deputy checked the area for possible owners, but said no one was missing any cows.

11:48 a.m. - A deputy was dispatched to a wandering pig in Lee Township. The pig wasn't aggressive while the deputy was there. The deputy shared statute (433.14a Public nuisance; authority to kill swine running at large;) with the homeowner along with other options.

8:21 a.m. - In Lee Township, a 19-year-old female reported that when she woke up this morning, she noticed that someone had spray painted her trailer house causing $10 damage. She suspected a 20-year-old male. Contact was made with the male who denied it.

4:55 a.m. - Deputies responded to a report of three horses in the roadway in Lincoln Township, but could not locate the horses. While searching, the owner called central dispatch and advised that he found his horses and locked them up.

I'll post more as more crime is reported!

7:45 p.m. — A deputy was called to an Ingersoll Township home for a report of an injured deer and to issue a deer permit. Before the deputy arrived, the deer got up and ran away.

10:18 a.m. — A deputy was sent to Midland Township for a report of a loose dog and an open door at a home. The resident was found outside walking the dog, and said she left the door open on purpose.

4:35 a.m. — A deputy was sent to U.S. 10 in Lincoln Township for a report of an injured deer in the roadway. The deer was not hurt and moved out of the road when the deputy was on the scene, the media log entry states.

On a more serious note:

9:17 p.m. — A deputy spoke with a Bay County resident about a possible crime that occurred in the 1950s

I'm guessing someone was a serial litterbug.

In regard to the deer, I'd guess we have more deer than people around us. Right now they're in rut, meaning that they want to get it on with any deer they can find, and they are acting really bold. I had a big buck the other night refuse to get out of my way on the road until I was within a few feet of him. If you see them, you slow down and nudge toward them until they move, not call the police! I mean come on... do you really need to call the police for that?!?

And those, who will occasionally start reading the series of a small town's police reports from this point, may think that only deer and policemen live there:)

Haha. Well, we did have an actual murder here a few weeks ago. A lady shot her dad and killed him because he decided to euthanize her sick dog. She then killed herself. That's about the only real serious crime we get here, and it happens like once every 3-4 years or so.

As for stupid small town crime, I have this:

11:31 a.m. — A Sanford man, 71, reported he believes his neighbor, age 68, is shining car headlights at his home and windows intentionally. The incident remains under investigation

9:05 a.m. — A trash can was stolen from a Larkin Township home.

8:53 a.m. — A Greendale Township woman, 19, was concerned about footprints in the snow around her home. It was discovered the footprints were made by the woman’s dog.

I suspect that in fact it is intentionally 🙂 Please update when the news arrives Dustin 😉

We would probably never know about that one...

That could be very dangerous I guess..although there isn't a deer's here.

A new update...

10:53 a.m. — Deputies investigated a report of breaking and entering at a Lee Township home, and determined the damage was the result of a search warrant that was conducted by law enforcement.

10:53 p.m. — A Lee Township man, 44, reported receiving a phone call from a person he did not know who said he backed into his car, then told him he’d been pranked and hung up. The man was advised to block the number.

3:02 p.m. — A deputy was called to a Jerome Township school for a report of vehicles parking in the fire lane. A school official was asked to make an announcement asking drivers to move their vehicles.

And for those who think the Nigerian prince scam thing never works...

2:29 p.m. — An Edenville Township man, 20, lost $1,300 to a scam after cashing a check he received and sending money by Money Gram.

Speaking of great pranks... I ended up ringing up the live chat of a casino website and asking if their refrigerator was running.

The girl didn't get it right away, and she told me that it was a personal question. When I told her that she should go catch it, she finally caught on 🙂

A poor prank for a person without sense of humor. Yep, they met each other 😀

So there are no Walls in this house?

Well you better leave before the roof falls on your head.

Moe: [answering the phone] Moe's Tavern.
Bart: Hello, is Al there?
Moe: Al?
Bart: Yes, Al. Last name: Coholic.
Moe: Let me check... [calls] Phone call for Al. Al Coholic. Is there an Al Coholic here?
[bar patrons laugh]
Moe: Wait a minute. [to phone] Listen, you little yellow-bellied rat jackass. If I ever find out who you are, I'll kill you! [hangs up]
Bart and Lisa: [laugh]
Homer: I hope you do find that punk someday, Moe.
