Ouch, my back!

5 replies • Last post

On Easter Sunday I was playing with my daughter, who got a tennis racket from the Easter Bunny. We were in my hallway batting the ball to each other, and she hit it a bit wide. I was on my knees and ended up sliding a bit, twisting my back in the process.

The tweaked back wasn't so bad at first, as I went about my day, hitting up Easter brunch and going to my in-laws afterwards. Throughout the day though, my back started getting stiffer and more touchy, and by Monday morning I was in a LOT of pain. Because of that I ended up calling my chiropractor and asking if she'd help me out. She had me come to the office and she massaged me and very gently pushed on my spine to help align it. Afterward, she put me on a traction table for 20 minutes, and I thought things were getting better...

That is until she went to help me get up from the table. I had an intense surge of pain in my back and told her I couldn't stand up and would probably have to call. This is the last thing I remember....

When I woke up I was on the floor with the doctor behind me on the phone with the paramedics. I was sweaty and had no idea where I was or what happened. I ended up having to go to the hospital, where I stayed for two days until I was released yesterday afternoon. Thus far they think it is a pinched sciatic nerve with back spasms, but I am starting to wonder if there isn't something in my hips that is causing this pain too.

Needless to say, I am still in a LOT of pain, and moving the slightest bit sets it off all over again.

Have any of you had a debilitating injury? How long did it take you to overcome? Do you have any tips as to how I can treat this? I am currently taking two Vicodin every four hours, a muscle relaxer every eight hours, and my arthritis med with every meal. I obviously want to try and wean myself off these pills ASAP.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was in the hospital nearly 3 days, and I only had one doctor even look at my back, and he did for seriously 5 seconds, which has agitated my wife and I, as we are going to face a big bill but won't have any concrete answers as to what exactly is wrong. Grrr....

Man that sounds terrible. I hope you get well soon.

I hurt my back last year by bending over to pick up a leaf (yes thats right, a leaf!) from a thigh-high retaining wall in our back yard. It seized up and I could not move for a while and the pain was intense. It took weeks of physio to get it right again. I was told it was just dumb luck.

Ouch! I wish I had some advice for you. I guess just rest and listen to the docs. If you need the meds, then take them - I know we don't want to take too many pills, but that is what they are for and it is so important to stay ahead of the pain, not wait until you can't stand it anymore to take meds, because that makes the battle harder.

I would definitely complain to the hospital!

I hope you recover quickly and you are not in too much pain much longer.

Take care!

Thanks guys. I am feeling quite a bit better today, although my back is still sore and spasms occasionally. I am getting serious on my stretches and trying to get this thing under control.

I am having some back pain as well, not that serious but still not very pleasant. I have pain in my neck and I think it''s sometimes because of the way I sleep and then I can get really sick feeling. But I hope you're doing much better. Smile
