2016 Academy Awards tipping competition - win CLchips

42 replies • Last post

NOT FOUND: oscarstatue.png
Once again it is time for our annual Academy Awards tipping competition. You can win yourself up to 200 CLchips just by predicting who will win at the Oscars.

The rules are pretty simple:
1. Entry is free to all Casino Listings members.
2. Just nominate your winner in each of the categories below in a reply to this thread. The person who picks the most winners scoops the pool of 100 CLchips.
3. If there is a tie we'll split the pool evenly.
4. If someone gets every single category right, we'll double the prize to 200 CLchips.
5. Entries close at the beginning of the Oscars ceremony which is February 28, 2016, 7pm U.S. Eastern time.
6. You can enter multiple times if you change your mind, but only your last dated post will be used as your entry.

We have 9 categories that you need to pick from and an extra special question at the end to make it 10 in all.

1. Best Picture
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant

Spotlight

2. Actor In a Leading Role

Good luck film fans!

Of course Stallone was nominated way back in the 70s for Rocky but it is not like his recent work has been a showcase of acting skills. In fact in 2000 he won the "Worst actor of the century" award at the Razzies, which is an alternative to the Oscars that makes fun of terrible films. He has won many other razzies.

He must have done something good this year!

Thank you for putting this up, CL-Ed! I have seen them all now except Room and Brooklyn. I used to get through all the Best Pictures, PLUS the pictures that were up for Best Actor and Actress but not Best Picture, but it has been a busy year. 😢 I will put up my picks over the weekend.

I was just jocking Ed, it's quite an improvement for the Worst actor of the century to be nominated at the Oscars 😉

Worst Actor of the Century

WINNER
Sylvester Stallone
For 99.5% of everything he has EVER done. -This is my favourite part 😂

I am actually glad Stallone received a nomination, and I Hope he wins. I do wish Michael Jordan would have also received a nomination, he is such a good "up and coming." I was also really hoping that one of my favorites, Idris Elba, would have been nominated for Beasts of No Nation.

Sorry, Ms.Blabberfingers can’t resist a few comments with my picks, but I tried to limit them.

Like I said, I feel the LEAST confident I have felt from any other year this year. That is what took me so long! Decisions, decisions, decisions! Also noticed: No adapted screenplay and original screenplay? Those will be tough categories, so glad they were not included here. lol

1. Best Picture – The most difficult, unpredictable year in many years, which makes it most exciting for all of us! I really thought The Big Short or Spotlight would take this one (kept going back and forth on this one, and my top choice out of those three would be The Big Short)but it seems The Revenant is going to take the award (IMHO). 🙂 Maybe? I really don't know - what a very unpredictable year!

The Revenant

2. Actor In a Leading Role
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant – It will be a shock if this is not finally Leo’s year, although all the nominees in this category have never won an Oscar.

3. Actress In a Leading Role
Brie Larson, Room -
The little bit I saw of this film was absolutely amazing. I couldn’t find a good copy online, and many were taken down as fast as they went up. I cannot WAIT to see this movie in its entirety.

4. Actor In a Supporting Role

Sylvester Stallone, Creed

5. Actress In a Supporting Role

Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

6. Directing

Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant

7. Cinematography

The Revenant

8. Animated Feature Film

Inside Out

9. Documentary (feature)

Amy

10. Extra special question
Which film will win the most Oscars? The Revenant

I really liked Christian Bale's performance in The Big Short and Mark Ruffalo's performance in Spotlight, but I think Stallone is going to take it, so I had to go with the favored instead of who I really would like to see win.

Ruffalo was absolutely AMAZING in Foxcatcher with Steve Carrel last year. A near-perfect performance, IMHO. 🙂

Best Cinematography goes to The Revenant. Quite a few of you picked that and hope777, Nin Wayne, and Sharpe are two from two so far.

Mad Max Fury Road already has 6 oscars (I wrote 4 then refreshed the page and it had won 2 more!) and is the early leader for our final category - the film with most wins. But... no-one has picked it.

The next category coming up for us is Best Animated Feature Film. I am the only one in this comp who did not pick Inside Out so my fingers are crossed that you are all wrong! 😂

Best Supporting Actor - Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies. Sorry Stallone fans and well done wildgerri who was our only entrant to get that one!

Amy takes out the Best Documentary award.

We're left with the 4 big categories to come on our competition. Even if The Revenant wins all its remaining nominations it won't beat Mad Max to the most Oscars.

6. Directing: Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant
7. Cinematography: The Revenant
8. Animated Feature Film: Inside Out
9. Documentary (feature): Amy
10. Extra special question: Mad Max Fury Road

When will I ever learn to go with my FIRST instinct? lol When my son and I were filling out our ballots at home, I had originally picked Spotlight. Early on, I thought, "Spotlight." What threw me was I was 95% certain that The Revenant director and actor were going to win, and I thought the movie would then follow. WRONG! 😂

At home, I was able to beat my son by predicting 16/24 categories correctly.

The big surprises of the night were Best Supporting Actor - I was VERY pleased with this pleasant surprise, and Best Song, which everyone thought would go to Lady Gaga (she did do a beautiful job singing the song last night).

Thrilled about Spotlight - such an important topic. My oldest son (youngest, who was here watching the awards with me last night, has not seen it yet) did not like the movie as much as I did. I believe this is because Spotlight was a very understated story... one that was quietly told, not filled with a great deal of the visible drama and heartache that went on behind the scenes and in the aftermath, and I think that is what he was expecting from the movie. The movie is more about the journalist, less focusing on the victims, although they are always there in the background - they are the journalists' purpose.

I was also very happy about Inside Out and the Best Documentary Feature, Amy. Music Original Score for The Hateful Eight was well-earned after seven (I believe?) previous nominations.

How do you all think Chris Rock handled the "Oscars So White" issue while having to host as an African American celebrity?

Congrats on choosing the Best Picture! Spotlight was my first instinct, right from the start, and the only film I thought might top it was The Big Short. Then all the hype over the Revenant swayed my vote. That's fun that Jennifer Lawrence is your "hometown girl." 🙂
