How did we ever live with slow internet?

53 replies • Last post

Today I was logging onto the computer and trying to get some work done, and I ended up noticing that things were lagging a bit. Pretty soon I realized that the issue wasn't with my computer, but rather with a very slow internet speed coming into my house. Upon testing it I realized that my speed was way down from my 60 Mbps normal and only pulling in 1.4.

Now, I remember when 1.4 was considered to be blazing fast, especially when compared to the 28.8 and 56k modems I grew up with... but now I don't think I could function on anything less than 6! Obviously our needs have grown along with our technology, but isn't it astounding that slower internet speeds were considered so good not that long ago and they almost seem to cripple us now?

My random observation of the day 😜

Nice observation!!! do you think the internet speed affects online games? or rather did you play in online casinos at those speeds?

Man a 28.8k modem was luxury. I used to call BBS boards on my Amiga with a 2400 baud modem. That's 2.4k. If you had a perfect connection you could expect to download 1 megabyte in around 7 or 8 minutes.

I had a friend in high school whose dad was a journalist in the Vietnam War who still had an old acoustic coupler sitting around at home that he showed me one day. That was a device that you literally put the phone handset up against so that it could beep through his articles to the other side of the world.

Don't talk to me about 1.4Mbit being slow. Its 175kb per second for goodness sake! Sheesh... kids these days! Git off my lawn!

In all seriousness, that can be pretty painful. So many websites these days are loaded up with so much unnecessary bloat like tracking libraries, social plugins (yes I know, we have them, but I am working on getting rid of them soon), auto playing videos and whatnot. If you're still stuck with it for a while, I highly recommend installing an ad blocker or tool like Ghostery and you'll be amazed at how much quicker web surfing becomes.

Our children don't or won't remember the sound that the dial tone connection, they won't know what a "floppy disk" is or that it is the "save" icon, and ... what else?

These Kids React videos are kinda fun. Here they react to old computers, including the floppy disk.. My students had no idea what an encyclopedia was. I had to compare it to a dictionary (several dictionaries, lol) and wikipedia. But out of about 14 students, not one could tell me what an encyclopedia was.

Thanks, Slim! My computer speed is pretty good, but maybe something to think about in the future.

I did move and live where the telecommunications (phone, internet) were very slower than where I lived.
At first, I only felt the slowness very inconvenient, of course.

But, as time goes, I got used to it, and I realized that maybe I or we were too much connected on internet by blogs, forums, etc.

That's an interesting point. I sometimes like to just unplug when I get a chance, and it's quite refreshing. That being said, I don't think I could live without much technology for long!

I think we having slow internet is like having kids in a sense that you have to tolerate it because you'd look like an idiot if you started screaming at both. πŸ˜‚

Ha! These young whippersnappers will never know the pain of trying to record a game password so that they could start at the same level. Like Super Mario Bros.... there were no continues, die and you're done. My kids have played the game as a remake and there are continues and save points! Who'd of thunk it?

Nice ... Galaga was my all time favourite when I was a kid. I could play over an hour with just one 20c coin.

Ah, hahaha, it is good to see this game again.
How could you play Galaga so long with one coin 🀷 πŸ™‚

I eventually did very well one Air Combat game, probably the tile was "1945" or something.

And my most favorite games were Bubble Bubble and Wonder Boy πŸ™‚

Most likely it was 1943. I loved that game too. I never did manage to finish it though I could play for a long time. And Bubble Bobble and Wonder Boy were two of my favourites too.

I used to play a lot of video games as my mother worked in a squash and gymnasium place and that is what I did while I was waiting for her. I was very good at the shoot'em ups. And a game called Track & Field where you had to press the buttons fast to make your guy run faster or jump higher. I used one of those little old plastic film canisters and rubbed it over the buttons back and forth super fast. I could play that forever. The owners used to get annoyed at me and switch the machine off after I had been playing for too long because they weren't making any money.

You should be glad mate. Here in the Philippines, one of the slowest internet connection in the world. You will have to wait for endless buffering and logging in to account would take about 10 up 20 mins. Living here sucks man. That's why I've been trying my luck with this online casino. Just to get out of here.

I remember when there was no wifi and the only way to have that slow internet was to have cable and it was so messy.

Bah. That were luxury. When I was young we had to tie two cans together with a piece of string and walk three miles uphill in both directions to my friends house who lived in a lake so we could play space invaders together on our Commodore 64s.

Well having a 256kbps internet that time is good enough for me. Their isn't so much to that time on the internet playing online game or gambling online does not even exist. And those days life is a little bit simple compare today.

But still I think nowadays teenagers don't appreciate how much technologies have improved. When I was a kid, we would spend the whole time outside, but now I see even small kids with ipads etc, which I think is completely unnecessary.

Fully agreed mate, here's the same, hate to see these kids with devices worth one or two monthly salaries , how we can expect from them to appreciate what they've got after that, I like the way you said it - it's completely unnecessary.

Kids nowadays are really spoiled, though. Some parents just let them off with too much, and that kills their character IMO

And I think that to this threads question the answer is really simple- we just had other things to think about and do. People were more social in real life, were going to meet friends more etc. But ofcourse as technologies improve we only expect everything to be faster and better.
