The Man in the High Castle

6 replies • Last post

Has anyone gotten the chance to see The Man in the High Castle? It's a show on Amazon about an alternate history where Germany and Japan win WWII and occupy the United States. I am two episodes in and find it to be fascinating, as it manages to bring a lot of intrigue to the table.

If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it, but if you have, tell me your thoughts.

I quite like a lot of Philip K. Dick's books, and this show is based on one of his stories which I have read. I don't have Amazon but have managed to find a copy of the first season of this show and I hope to watch it soon. From what I have read it has mixed reviews, so we'll see.

Huge Phillip K. Dick fan waving to you both over here! Yes! He is such a fascinating person/author, and he has written so many good stories. I am NOT a Science Fiction fan, either, except when it comes to Phillip K. Dick who my middle son turned me onto several years back.

I am in the middle of the third episode, and my oldest son is almost finished (we watch on free streaming sites), and we are both liking it very much. He wants me to catch up, because he is dying to tell me things about it. Such an interesting concept. I find the acting to be very good and the story one that makes me want to keep watching.

I was so pleasantly surprised to see this thread! 🙂

I caught the first episode last night. It seems like a reasonable start and I'm eager to watch the next one.

PKD has written a lot of great novels and short stories that have been turned into movies. Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, Minority Report and a Ben Affleck one I can't remember the name of abut a guy using a thing called a time scoop to change his own future.

If you don't really like the sci-fi stuff much hope, try watching A Scanner Darkly which is far less sci-fi than all the others. Its about a bunch of guys addicted to this drug called Substance D and the undercover cops trying to catch them. It is done in an interesting style where they filmed the actors then drew animation over the top, sort of...

Oh man I love Minority Report, Blade Runner, and Total Recall. I will have to check out A Scanner Darkly as it sounds pretty need and looks pretty slick as well.

I saw the 2nd episode of The Man in the High Castle last night. There were two things that bugged me about it. Don't read on if you don't want spoilers.

The first was the ambush at the start. When the last remaining guy steps out and aims at the nazi from about 5 steps away while he has his back turned trying to get the gun out of the back seat of the car... and he misses. That was ridiculous. And then at the end when the woman suddenly spins under and overpowers the guy trying to push her off the bridge then throws him at the railing. He's nowhere near going over it then they cut to the view from the other side of the bridge and show him going over. It was so unconvincing and badly edited that it was laughable.

Apart from that it was ok! 😉

I just finished episode four. I am watching this one slowly, but surely. My oldest son finished and liked it a lot. More Sci Fi type stuff toward the end, I guess. I am really enjoying the show, but you do have to suspend belief at times, as with many TV shows. After all, we watch The Walking Dead, right? I agree about the scene on the bridge. They made that look way too easy.
