Nerd Alert: The Video Game I've Been Playing

2 replies • Last post

As most CL users that have been around likely know, I am a huge nerd when it comes to playing video games. I find them to be a hobby of sort, as they give me something to do after the wife and kids all hit the hay late at night. I have been a video game player for years, and I was thrilled to have a game released last week that I have been looking forward to for 7 years.

That game is called Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It is a sequel spy/stealth/action game where you are sent on missions, but you also try to grow an army with the resources you earn from those missions. You can also develop new weapons and equipment based on the resources you gain, so you have to be smart about how and where you decide to expand.

The game also has a killer story to it, which has been ongoing for the last 30 years, as the first game was released on the NES and MSX video game systems. This game picks up with the main character coming out of a 9 year coma in a hospital, which is attacked and he has to escape despite being incredibly weak in bed after all these years. Making matters worse? The accident that led to the coma also took off your left arm!

Is anyone else here a video game fan? Have you played this game or any of the other games in the series? If so, what are your thoughts?

I am posting a trailer for the game, which I think is very well done. It is a bit bloody, so if you're squeamish you may opt to stay away:

I remember playing Metal Gear Solid on the old Playstation many years ago and it was pretty good. I actually prefer games that use a bit of stealth than just running around shooting everyone, which is beyond boring after seeing so many games like that for a couple of decades now. I haven't played any of the newer ones though.

I used to love stuff like Civilisation and RPGs but mostly I like my games quick and old school these days. Stuff like Geometry Wars or VVVVVV or Super Mario, or Lego Star Wars which my son loves. I don't have time for epic, long games that last weeks any more.

Yes, the original Metal Gear Solid is one of my favorite games of all time. My son is into Lego Star Wars, but it seems like we only get a few minutes in before his attention span is broken and he is on to the next thing.
