Road Trips

5 replies • Last post

The summer season is coming to an end for us on the northern side of the world, and I am wondering if anyone has gotten to take any interesting trips while the weather was warm.

My family and I are going up north to Mackinac Island this weekend with my parents in Michigan. It is about 200 miles up north from me, and is an island in Lake Huron. That is our big trip for the summer, as we had previously went on vacation this winter and are planning to hit Florida next May.

So what have you been up to? Where have you gone? I think I may visit the Kewadin Casino in St. Ignace and will make sure to take pictures of the area to show all of you!

Sounds fun. Do your parents have a place there or are you renting something or camping? I looked up Mackinac Island because I have never heard of it and saw this cute story:

Its still the tail end of winter here so no road recent trips to report. I did spend the weekend in Melbourne a few weeks back which was good fun, though I nearly froze my nuts off as it struggled to get above 10 or 11 celsius (thats about 50 for you dark age fahrenheit folks living in the USA). And yes I think that is really cold!

Try 50 below, CL-Ed. lol And, no, I don't know or understand why I still live here.

We have had a few really cool days in the middle of 80s - down to the sixties during the day and fifties at night which is really unusual for this time of year in Minnesota.

No road trips for me this summer - not even a short one. My youngest son is the only one who traveled any distance this summer. He and his girlfriend went to Yellowstone Park and stayed in Montana and brought back lots of fun and beautiful photos.

My middle son and best friend have traveled where you are going, 'Slim.

Have fun on your trip, 'Slim! Can't wait to see your photos Smile

Man, 50 degrees here is t-shirt weather when Spring finally arrives, and hoodie weather the rest of the time! We are staying at a hotel and then taking a ferry over to the island for the day, where the wife wants to pick up some of their fudge and do some shopping (yay.....).

Thanks for the well wishes Hope! I will for sure upload some good pics when we get back.

We ended up having a great trip up to Mackinac on our weekend, and here are some pics that I stole from my Aunt, whose camera work is MUCH better than mine (thanks Lisa!).

Mackinac Island is an island in Lake Huron in Michigan. For those of you not familiar, Michigan has two peninsulas (one that looks like a glove and the Upper Peninsula, which is long and skinny). The Mackinac Bridge connects the two of them together, and is very long at more than 26,000 feet in length.

To get to the island you have to take a ferry, which jets you out there at 35mph and feels very fast. The island itself is a historical park, and many of the spots on there are anywhere from between 100-300 years old. Interesting sites include the Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac, which saw some limited "battles" during the War of 1812 and was previously used as an outpost by British and American troops. You can't drive on the island, so you either have to walk or ride a horse... we ended up getting a private carriage tour of the island and got to go to a butterfly house and a spot called Arch Rock (you'll see it in the pics).

Anyway, we had a great time with my family, my mom and dad, my grandma, my aunt and her family. We can't wait to do it again!

Great photos, 'Slim! Glad you had a nice time. My son brought gorgeous photos back from that area when he went, too. He has traveled that way a few times. Such a pretty spot. I love the rock formation photo - such pretty scenery.

Thanks for sharing! Smile
