Good TV Shows?

396 replies • Last post

Hey guys, I have been really busy lately and unable to keep up with any shows on TV. I know it is summer here so I am not inside a bunch until late at night, but I am still looking for some new shows to watch. Any suggestions?

Not all of these are new and you've probably watched some, but how about:
- Game of Thrones
- House of Cards
- Fargo
- Better Call Saul
- Orphan Black. A sci-fi/mystery show where one actress plays many different clones of herself.
- Broadchurch. Excellent British show about a murder in a small town.
- The Missing. Another English show about a small boy who goes missing from his parents while they are on holiday in France.
- Sherlock. Again English and about Sherlock Holmes, but its much better than the current American show that I can't remember the name of.

The Good Wife has been around for ages but it's such great quality drama. I particularly love the legal drama stuff and the series covers issues in current affairs. And it features a strong female lead which you don't find in many TV shows!

Thanks for the replies. I am a big fan of House of Cards and binge watched all of the episodes of the new season in 4 days! Orphan Black is being offered on Amazon Prime right now in 4K, so I probably will pick that one up this week.

My wife and I used to watch The Good Wife, but we have fallen out of it a bit over the past year or two. I think we used to watch a lot more series when we just had our TV antenna and streaming, and now that we have cable we don't do it too much. I really hope that changes, especially this fall as the weather gets worse.

The Good Wife is a pretty good show. They are very good at working current and recent news stories into the plot very quickly.

If you like Netflix originals like House of Cards then check out Peaky Blinders on Netflix. Its about a sportsbook in the 1920's. Betting, fighting, drugs and women. Includes the essential components of life as far as I am concerned.

I don't watch too many shows. But when I do, I watch oldies like Magnum PI, Rockford Files, Columbo. I also like period shows like Murdoch mysteries, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, The Agatha Christie's series etc.

Rectify ! First two seasons on Netflix, and Season Three is on Sundance right now. Already approved for Season Four. This show is unique, but beautifully executed. Acting is amazing!

I have been watching Hannibal, but very sad it is cancelled. Wayward Pines is interesting, but I hear only one season.

Twin Peaks is a fun cult oldie on Netflix. Another oldie on Netflix that is intriguing with good mystery and acting is Damages.

Ray Donavon is pretty good, as is The Strain.

True Detective Season Two is getting slammed, but I think too many compare it to Season One, and I find it to be decent enough to watch.

Orphan Black and if you love action, Banshee, but those two just ended (but you can find about anything online).

Justified and Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie all had series finales! 😢

And, finally, did you see the Comic Con sneak peak for the next season of The Walking Dead? O.M.G.!

And, yes, I missed my calling. I want to watch TV for a living. haha 😉

Some of the above are not summer shows, 'Slim, and here is another one that I REALLY liked the first season. Not sure when it will be back.

Welcome back, Hope! I am happy to see you back. I am starting Orphan Black tonight, and also have True Detective and this HBO show called Ballers set up in my HBO Go app to watch.

I am also gearing up for one of my favorite documentary series, Hard Knocks, which takes an in-depth and uncut look NFL training camp.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I will go back through and check out the others if I get time.

I see CL Ed suggested Fargo and Better Call Saul

For Breaking Bad fans, Saul is a must. So fun to watch something that has Vince Gilligan written all over it. lol

We DO have to talk about Orphan Black without revealing spoilers for others, because there is something VERY Special about that show involving the main actress, Tatiana Maslany. She is AMAZING!!! I own season one and watched with my son, so I have to order season two of Orphan Black AND Banshee now.

For those of you who love action AND can suspend belief a bit when watching your shows,Banshee is the one.

I haven't heard of Bailers yet

My son loves Silicon Valley and I was thinking of trying that one someday.

Are you a Game of Thrones watcher? I know CL ED is, and my son is,too, but I would have some serious binge watching to do to catch up on that one. I do want to watch it someday, but I just have not gotten to that point yet So much TV, so little time. lol

Thanks for the welcome back. I hate how I got out of the habit of visiting here, and I hope to correct that. Missed this place for sure! 🙂

I believe The Good Wife is one of the most intelligently written shows on regular TV. I can't believe how they just keep getting better as the seasons go on, and I love many of the guest stars.

Homeland kinda jumped the shark, but season one was pretty good. I just keep thinking of more and more. lol

I also LOVE Shameless USA, but that is one CRUDE show, NOT for the prudish or squeamish. lol!

I can't do Game of Thrones. Every time I try to get into it I just can't.

I have had a hard time squeezing in my TV time as my oldest daughter is at the age where she gets to stay up a bit later now and she hogs the set until she goes to bed. Then I have to deal with my wife and her awful shows until she goes to bed (she retires 1-2 hours before I do). By the time I want to settle down to watch I am exhausted or stuck on watching something awful. Last night I watched celebrity poker with a bunch of B-list celebs.... yay?

I am so psyched for Fargo, Season Two.

And have you guys heard of Last Comic Standing? My youngest two sons grew up with a friend who went to their school, and they just attended his bachelor party. Youngest son is a comedian, and the lovely couple were married at Acme Comedy Club in Minneapolis, Anyway, the bride, Andi Erickson, was chosen as one of 100 people to be on Last Comic Standing this season. I can't wait to watch her! I am going to my son's comedy show tonight, as a matter of fact 🙂

Poor Vince Vaughn is getting slammed for his performance in True Detective this season Colin Farrel is killing it, but it has been a strange season, and that is not only due to Season One being so far above the rest of what is on television I blame the writers who are giving him some of the most unnatural dialogue to deliver this season.
I had to laugh out loud last episode as his character was talking to a ten year boy who had just lost his father (one of Vaughn's character's criminal buddies and he and his wife stopped by to console the widow and her son) So the kid is throwing a ball up against a wall and then catching it. Pretty basic stuff, right? And Vaughn's character says very seriously, "did your dad teach you how to do that?' Really? I really feel bad for him in this role, and overall this season has been mixed - but okay enough that I keep watching

I would still HIGHLY recommend Rectify. It is different than anything I have seen on TV. Do not expect fast moving action, but the acting is amazing and the story just artfully done. I love it!

Go on folks... get into Game of Thrones. You won't be disappointed, I promise. And once you catch up you can read the books and go on and on about all the little things that changed in the show. 😉

I've got True Detective on my list but haven't started it yet. I've been told it is very good.

Slim, did you start on Orphan Black yet? Without spoilering too much... who is your favourite "character" hope? Strangely I think mine is the soccer mum and her bumbling husband. They are unintentionally hilarious. The Ukrainian crazy one is also very entertaining.

It is so difficult to choose a favorite, but I do love Elena and the way she says, "My Sistras!" lol I think Allison is amazing and Allison and Donny stories are always fun, so I would say those two as well! I also really like Felix and how he has to be there for all his sistras! 😉

I still believe The Good Wife is a show with some of the highest quality writers for a show on network TV.

I just watched the second episode of Last Comic Standing, and our girl from Ham Lake, MN not only got up and did an excellent job, but they chose her to do a little montage about her life before she came up to do her bit! They do not do this with every comic, so that was so fun to see Andi Erickson put Ham Lake, Minnesota, USA, on the map! lol! I was SO excited when she was the FIRST out of the ten that night to be chosen to go on to the next round. And she has some tough competition. Who knew when these young people were hanging out at my house that there would be a star in our midst? lol

On another note, I just have to brag up my son a little. I attended his comedy show on TH night where two comics go head to head and the audience votes by applause on who did the best for that round, and my son won his round! My middle son and I attended, and the place was packed.

I love attending his comedy shows and seeing all the comics. After all, laughter is the best medicine, right? 🙂

I was looking for new shows to watch so I was directed here by Hope777. I just recently binge watched Ray Donovan. I hate waiting a week in between episodes. I am all caught up on The Good Wife, and still think it's a great show. Justified is so good that I watched the whole thing again for the third time! I've also started Boardwalk Empire again even though I've watched it twice. Hope had recommended these shows to me before. I'm so glad she did. I've watched House of Cards twice. I also like The Americans. It's about Russian spies who pretend to be Americans with normal jobs. I like Broadchurch. The pace of the show and people is slowed down. Relaxing. I will check back to see what new shows come up.

I also liked House of Cards, but the first season is still the best for me. I love The Americans, but wow did last season have some cringe worthy scenes. And I am no prude. lol Oh, and Broadchurch - EXCELLENT show, which reminds me of the other excellent British show, Luther. Or should I say EYE CANDY. hahaha! 😉

Just finished Season Three of Rectify. This is, by far, my favorite show currently on TV. Season One and Three have only six episodes, and Season Two has ten episodes - quality over quantity. Amazing acting, story, and the most uniquely artistic show I have ever seen; nothing else like this on TV. Season Four was approved shortly after Season Three came out. This is one of those shows where you do not want it to end (seasons AND series). Again, NOT action-packed, and not even fast moving, but it completely holds ones interest by the character studies and the story line - never boring.

Hi CL-Ed,

I started watching Suits a while back. I made it through the first few episodes, and it was pretty good, but I decided I watch way too much TV so that one is on the back burner. lol

I will see if I can find any of my son's work on YouTube - I know there are videos out there, but I like to be selective in what I actually share. lol Therefore, I will most likely PM you the links. There should be another coming up this week - something he does with community TV called "Mid-Afternoons" about a show that they always try to get started but can never quite get through. He's also done some "Street View" where he interviews people about crazy things lol In addition, skits and stand up. I will see if I can find you the best of the best and send soon. Thanks for your interest! 🙂

P.S. He just received a 50 dollar check from that last competition Not much, but really fun to be paid since most shows are not..

Hope, I would like to see one of his youtube videos too! I've been watching Hearland. It is a Canadian show. Very slow paced, relaxing. It's about a girl whose mom was a horse whisperer. Her mom dies and now the daughter is taking on healing horses with problems. I love the scenery there with the mountains.
