Magic: The Gathering

13 replies • Last post

When I was a kid I used to see all of these "nerds" playing this card game known as Magic: The Gathering. I couldn't get over the fact that there were orcs and hobbits or whatever you call them alongside dragons and magic potions, and just never really got into it.

One of my buddies is an avid player, and he was telling me how it is like poker. After almost a year of badgering I gave in and let him teach me how to play.

Now I am hooked.

I still don't really know what I am doing with it, but the game does have a ton of strategy and does play a bit like poker, I guess. Have any of you ever played this game, and what are your thoughts on it? Is there anything I should be aware of before I actually plop down some money to play this with my friends?

Dude that IS incredibly nerdy. You'll be wearing a pocket protector and a bunch of pens in your shirt pocket and taping your glasses together in no time.

Isn't it one of those games where you have to buy packs of cards and the good cards are rare, so you have to spend heaps of money to get them?

Also I found this just for you.

I totally misread the word pens you wrote and got offended for a minute. Smile

I swear I will never go to a Magic tournament. I may like the strategy of the game, but I did walk into a game store one time during a tournament and it reeked of wretched cheese and shame. I couldn't stand it for more than a minute and I bolted.

So what is the deal? You have to buy packs of random cards to play?

Yeah, you buy a starter pack and then buy booster packs to try to get better cards. I couldn't see myself buying tons of them, but my buddy and his wife have date nights where they drink beer and open their new cards.

Some people are really into it.

I looked up how much these cards cost and came across a site that shows how much some of the rare cards cost. Start saving dudes! Confused

meh, I have 8/9 of the most sought after cards, Black Lotus is the last of them, but it is not worth it to me at any price.

Why is it so pricey? Is it because it gives you a big advantage in the game, or purely because it is rare?

I think it is a combination of both. Not all cards are created equally, and they do only print limited editions of some cards.

I still haven't pulled the trigger to jump full in. God knows my X-Wing figure game has sucked out about $100 from my pocket so far this year.

Black Lotus is expensive for multiple reason, one of those reasons it was printed in 3 expansion sets, Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited. It is also a Rare card, in each booster pack there 11 commons, 3 uncommon and 1 rare, so chances of pulling one were low. Lastly, it is godly, but unplayable in a modern deck. So if you can find this 20+ year old card is this great of shape, sell it and play some slots. Smile
