2014 Academy Awards competition - win CLchips

27 replies • Last post

oscarstatue.png
Once again we are running an Academy Awards tipping competition right here. All you have to do to win is list who you think will win an Oscar in the categories we nominate. How it works:

1. Just nominate your winner in each of the categories below in a reply to this thread. The person who picks the most winners scoops the pool of 100 CLchips.
2. Entry is free.
3. If there is a tie we'll split the pool evenly.
4. If someone gets every single category right, we'll double the prize to 200 CLchips.
5. Entries close at the beginning of the Oscars ceremony which is March 2, 2014, 7pm U.S. Eastern time.
6. You can enter multiple times if you change your mind, but only your last dated post will be used as your entry.

You can see all the nominees here, but we are only tipping some of the categories. The categories you need to pick from:

Great picks, 'Slim! I just returned from Florida, so I have to start thinking about this one.
Did you see American Hustle yet? I really liked it, and I liked Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, too. I agree Cate Blanchett did an excellent job. Woody Allen works so well with female actors, always bringing out the best performances.

Thank you for putting up the thread, CL-Ed! It was nice to come back to CL and see the thread. Smile

Well here goes nothing. This year I feel the least confident about my picks, but who knows? The odds of getting them all correct are pretty slim, lol.

Oscar Picks 2014

Best Picture

12 Years a Slave

I just reviewed this movie in the movie thread if anyone has not seen it yet.

Actor In a Leading Role

I would have loved for Bruce Dern to win for his excellent performance in Nebraska, but this was just a strong year for actors in a leading role. I do believe McConaughey will win, although maybe Leo will finally get his win after being snubbed by the academy for many years now?

Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

Actress In a Leading Role

Although I am rooting for my dear Amy Adams who performed at the ChanhassenDinner Theatre in Minnesota for seven years (her handprints are outside the front door), I believe Cate Blanchett will win this year. Woody Allen brings out the best in female acting performances. Good luck next year, Amy Adams.

Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine

Actor In a Supporting Role

Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club

Actress In a Supporting Role

So many awesome performances in this category. Among my favorites are Julia Roberts in August: Osage County, and June Squibb certainly stole the show in Nebraska. I think this is a race between Lupita Nyong'o and Jennifer Lawrence.

Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave

Directing

MY PICK: Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity

COULD WIN: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave

Cinematography

Gravity, Emmanuel Lubezki

Animated Feature Film

Frozen

One thing I love about the awards is the documentary and documentary shorts
categories. You can see previews to all nominated on the http://oscar.go.com/nominees
plus trailers to all the movies, of course.

LET'S GET SOME MORE ENTRIES IN HERE! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! Smile

I'm saving my entry until later. I have .. er .. acquired several of the nominated movies and I'll try to line up as many as I can tonight and over the weekend, so long as I can stop watching House of Cards which is like TV crack. Anyway...

I have seen Wolf of Wall Street and if Leonardo won no-one could complain. The guy he played was a maniac and he was very convincing. I also watched Frozen last week with my kids and it was very good for a girly Disney movie. I quite enjoyed it. I'm not so sure it will win though, the Academy seems to love Miyazaki movies and there's one nominated this year.

I was only able to watch ONE episode of House of Cards before I left for Florida, but what a shocker! I have SO MANY shows going right now, I will never catch up, lol

I would not be sad if Leo finally won. He has been snubbed by the Academy so many times. Also the Cohen Brothers were definitely snubbed this year for Inside Lleyen (sp?) Davis.

Like I said I feel the LEAST confident about my picks this year. I just pray Gravity does NOT win. That movie was all hype and a big bore, IMHO. Not sure I will be able to watch any more before the awards, but I watched ALMOST all. Smile

I watched Gravity last night. I can't say that there are many movies these days that I regret not seeing at the cinema but that was one of them. I enjoyed it but I think it would have been far more impressive had I seen it on the biggest screen possible. I wanted to see it when it was out but just never had the time. It was good but not best picture material.

I agree Gravity would be a good one for the big screen. My son told me it was "too happy" and "boring." This seems like one people either love or hate. I am watching it now, but I am not impressed, and I am puzzled by the hype, especially in comparison to the other great films it stands against. I agree that it's not best picture material, and I will be very disappointed if it does win, and right now it sounds as if it does stand a chance. Why? I have no idea. lol

Part of the fun of the Oscars for me is seeing some of the documentaries, doc shorts, and animated short films and live-action short. There are some very interesting ones out this year, as usual. Article about them here, and you can see trailer for all at the oscar site I have posted in a few different threads.

Thats a lot of love for Gravity from you Chelsea. At least you didn't pick Sandra Bullock. Good luck!

By my watch the awards start in around 35 minutes so there is still time to get an entry in if you haven't yet. Remember 100 CLchips for the winner.

You must have watched the first episode of the new season? I did not see that coming at all, not even 2 seconds before it happened. I like that in a story!

I just had a quick look at the website and it seems that Gravity is cleaning up. I counted 6 award so far. And of the 6 awards that we are predicting, Chelsea has 6 out of 6 so far, with Best Actor and Picture still to come.

Actually I just checked and hope has 6 from 6 too. You have both picked Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor so it will come down to Best Picture to separate you two. I don't think anyone else can beat you two except me if I get both of my remaining picks right.

The double prize is on...

As I typed that I refreshed the page and saw that Matthew McConaughey and 12 Years a Slave have won. So I think hope777 has won it with a clean sweep for double the CLchips.

Sheesh, I increased the categories this year to try to make it harder. Next year I'm adding a couple more and I'm definitely putting a $10 accumulator bet on your tips hope..

Here are the relevant list of winners:

Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave
Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Supporting Actor: Jared Leto
Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyongo
Directing: Alfonso Cuaron
Cinematography: Gravity
Animated Feature Film: Frozen

Final standings with scores out of 8 and words of wisdom:
hope888 - 8 - perfection, enjoy 200 CLchips
Chelsea - 7 - so close yet so far
CL-Ed - 6 - can do better
wildgerri - 4 - better luck next time
barbadosslim93 - 4 - must try harder

This is so funny to me after what I said above about this being the year I was LEAST confident in my picks and how it would be difficult to get them all correct to double those CL points. I still can't believe it!

Also, I thought each player paid the winner 10 CL points as we did in the past, so thanks for putting up the points this year CL and thanks for the double points. This is awesome!

We print out ballots at home and out of all categories, I managed to get 20/24 correct, predicting the animated short, documentary short, and I think foreign film and not sure what else wrong.

What does this mean, CL-Ed?

" I'm definitely putting a $10 accumulator bet on your tips hope.."

I am a little bit blonde, lol, so can you clarify?

Love your words of wisdom, lol.

I really loved the awards this year, and I was touched by the three top speeches (IMHO): Jared Leto, Mathew McConaughey and Lapita Nyongo. Excellent speeches by those three. I also loved how Ellen ordered pizzas. She is such a great host and is always just herself. I think she did an excellent job tonight.

Well past my bedtime and I still haven't watched The Walking Dead. That will have to wait until tomorrow.

Thanks again! I am THRILLED! Smile

Wild Geri, I never knew this about you, and I thank you for sharing. I believe you will love Philomena. My mom was also a birth mother, and I met my sister several years ago now, but I grew up with four brothers never knowing anything about her. Long story.

There was an excellent article in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, a few years back about women from that day and age who were in this exact situation. There are many of you out there, stories untold, and it was such a touching article. Philomena is filled with many touching moments, but also humor and a unique relationship between Philomena and Martin.

I heard she could not be at the awards last night, because they are doing a sequel. I cannot imagine what a sequel to Philomena would look like, because it has a definite ending, so I am anxious to hear more about this.

I really enjoyed the awards last night. I adored June Squibb in Nebraska, too. SO funny! I love the clip they chose to play from the movie last night when they were going through the nominees for best actress.

Let me now when you have watched Philomena, dear friend. Smile

Awwww....I thought that might be what you meant, lol. I was actually surprised there were really no big upsets or surprises last night. I think 20/24 correct is definitely the best I have ever done, and I am not sure I will ever be able to match that, but I will always try my best!

Like I said it is the only awards show I watch, so I really get into it and look forward to it every year.

Her is the only movie I have not finished out of all those nominated. I am surprised I was able to catch up after getting a late start AND being gone for a week.

Congrats,Hope.I had fun with this.Couldn't stay awake for the whole show, but enjoyed what I saw.The adoption community has recruited Philomena to campaign for adoptees to get their original birth certificates in all the states,so she will be busy.I have been a part of their organizations for 30 years and their are a lot of people who fight to keep all the records sealed. The gals I worked with, all in their 60s and 70s now, have come out of retirement for their cause of adoptees civil rights.Anyway, thank you,CL,for a really great contest..

Pardon my ignorance wildgerri, but what exactly is a birth mother? Is it a surrogate mother who gives birth to a baby on behalf of another couple?

I hope it is okay if I answer for Wild Geri and she can also explain. A birth mother means biological mother. So, in the movie Philomena, she is a young woman who became pregnant in a different day and age so was sent to live with the nuns until she had her baby, then work for them for a number of years to earn her keep. Then the babies were adopted out against their will.

In my mom's case, her parents took care of her two little boys and sent her to work for a rich doctor and his wife She then had a baby girl who was adopted out, since mom was already a struggling single parent when this happened to her.

The article I referred to in my post above was so excellent, telling the stories of many women of "that time" who went through similar experiences, often against their true wishes.

I met my sister about 10 years ago now, and although our relationship never became as close as it is with my brothers, we do get together a few times per year. It has been a very bittersweet experience for me.

Thanks for the explanation hope. I'm glad times have changed for the better in this respect. Taking kids from their mother is just an awful thing to do.

I watched 12 years a slave the other day and it happens to a woman in that and its heartbreaking to watch.
