The Flu...

41 replies • Last post

....is supposed to be very bad this year. They are seeing many cases right now, too soon for this time of year, and they are saying that it has not even peaked yet.

Well, the flu has entered our home in the form of my youngest son. I feel SO sorry for him, because he suffered for four to six weeks in the spring getting over pneumonia, he has had a few bronchial infections since then, and now this! He cannot believe it, and he is so frustrated, and he is going "stir crazy. Each day he does not seem to get better at all: just stays the same. His white blood cell count is down, which worries me. They will recheck him in one week.

We are doing everything we can to take care of him: tea with honey, Emergen-C, Airborne tea, Epsom Salts baths, tons of fluids, mainly water, feeding him well (that is a plus: he still has his appetite), taking his vitamins, and everything we know how to do to help him, including encouraging lots of rest.

I am asking that you send some positive thoughts our way: both for him and for the rest of us in this household that WE do not get sick and that we STAY HEALTHY! I have felt like I have been "on the edge" of something every day since New Year's Day now, so I am hoping I can keep fighing off whatever it is, because I DO NOT and NEVER have time to be sick.

And, no. Not one of us had a flu shot this year. My mom already scolded me, because she said I am the one who got after her and my dad, years ago, and encouraged them both to get their shots every year. Once the boys grew up, I kind of got out of the habit, and I haven't had a flu shot for many years now.

Here is the map so you can see how many cases are reported in your state for the last week.

Hope, I won't say "Shame on You" because I'm sure you've already done that. And I won't remind you how important it is for someone with your son's health history it is to get flu shots.

I'll just say forgive yourself and promise to do better next year. btw, is it too late for the rest of you to get the shot this season?

My thoughts and prayers are with you,
Tere

Positive thoughts for you guys Hope777. And thx for the flu map link, I am always pretty careful about germs because of Lupus but I know they can sneak up on us.

Well, my youngest son is an adult, so the decision to get a flu shot or not is his and has been solely his for many years now. Plus I don't think he has been well enough to receive one (they won't give them when you are already sick). None of us have gotten them for year, and my own integrative physician does not believe in them. I still have mixed feelings about the shot. And, again, his choice is up to him, as an adult. When they were young, I made sure they had their shots every year, but that was because 1)I did in-home child care as a business and 2) middle son has asthma. As they grew up, we all got out of the habit, and that decision became their own.

I did get the flu only ONE year, and it was a year I had the shot. So, there are still no guarantees that the strain they have for the shot will match the strain for any given year.

I am extremely careful, too, because of my "other" health issues. I feel as if I have been fighting something off for days now. It is no fun. We can pick things up almost anywhere, really

Hoping my son feels a little better today. Last night he said he felt just a little bit better, so hoping he stays on the road to recovery.

I have never gotten the flu shot, but did consider it this year.

Now I am hearing that the flu strain that is affecting 41 of the states here is not covered by the current vaccination.

Glad I didn't spend the time or money on one!

Yes! I heard one place that the vaccination DOES cover the strain, then I heard another place that it does not. I don't believe there are every any guarantees, but there are other precautions we can take, besides and/or in addition to the flu shot.

i won't get the flu shot either. My conspirist theory is it spreads the flu to peeps that haven't had the shot winding up with a bigger epidemic. And really why do "THEY" push it so hard????its pushed way more than anti smoking or healthy eating, just seems strange to me.

I was really afraid of the Swine Flu shot. Oldest son gave into the fear/hype and got that one, then worried for a year. My brother won't go near it due the one he got years and years ago before going to Viet Nam: he got SO sick. I have very mixed feelings about the flu shot now, too, which is probably what makes me ignore getting one every year.

I can say the years I did get the shot, I had no side effects except for a sore arm for a day or two.

I won't get one either. I've done a lot of research on vaccinations. What I've read is scary. I wonder the same thing too about why they are pushing the shots so hard. It seems like the news stations back in Ohio tried to make it sound like people were stupid if they didn't get the shot. Walgreens is pushing them very hard, and also our grocery store. I see advertisements everywhere to get the flu shot. Even my 82 year old mom says NO WAY!

Hope, Try OREGANOL. Mix a little with water, and swish it in your mouth (or have son do it too) for as long as you can stand it. Do not swallow it. I did and got very sick. I think it was because I had a herx reaction to it. The naturopath that I went to suggested the Oreganol.

Thanks for the idea. I have heard of that before, but that is one I haven't tried.

I just made a list of my supplements/vitamins today, and there are now 20 items I am supposed to have on hand and be taking once to three times per day. lol That is not even counting my prescription medications. I am willing to try anything, though, if it will keep the germs and illnesses away or help them go away, once here!

Vitamin D is just as important to the immune system as Vitamin C, too, as they are discovering.

My mom gets her flu shot and pneumonia shot and she has had no side effects. Neither did I, but I just don't feel that comfortable getting them anymore. And, again, there are still no guarantees the shot will be for the strain that comes around. It is all just guesswork.

hope sorry to hear your family is sick. we just got done passing it around, and my 4year old ended up with pneumonia. but i used to work for a pharmacy and regarding the flu shot they were highly against them. since you injecting live virus into your body. and in turn you run a high chance of getting sick..and they say its your bodybuilding up. basically it makes them money due to you getting sick passing it on and then whoever gets needing meds its on viscous cycle. we have never done a flu shot and this is the first year that we got really sick were as most people we know that get them get sick soon after. but not everyone is the same 🙂

Good to know, and thanks! I am suspicious of the shot, and I was especially suspicious of the swine flu shots when doctors and pharmacists were writing and speaking against it.

And I just watched Contagion last night, lol. So scary to think something like that could really happen.

Youngest son is back to work now, and I am hoping he stays in the road to recovery. 🙂

The flu is all over the news in Minnesota. A teen aged girl passed away, and I believe we have had more deaths. Our state is LIT UP with flu cases on the "flu map." I think I am about to become a germaphobe. 😢

Minnesota has had 27 deaths from the flu so far this season:

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2013/01/11/health/severe-fl...

I am glad the flu is out of your house now, bobafett! I heard on the radio that it is a good "five days down" at the very LEAST. I have like five hand sanitizers in my purse, lol, and when I was out yesterday, I used it often!

Also, resist touching your faces, everyone and WASH YOUR HANDS!

I am glad to hear you are fully recovered, and I hope you stay healthy. That is scary about your friend. I am terrified of getting ill, because I have no weight on me, and I can't afford to lose another ounce. My son brought home some of those masks from the doctor, and I swear I am ready to start wearing those everywhere I go, lol!

My sister-in-law got one and has been sick for several weeks. I did read that it takes two weeks for them to start working, so she may have already been infected.

I took a small amount of Oreganol once and it made me so very sick. I have never "swallowed" it since. I just mix it with water and swirl, then get rid of it. It does seems to help.

I also read somewhere to leave a cut lemon out, because it attracts bacteria in the room to it. If nothing else, the lemon will smell good. 🙂

Do you have the actual flu, LuckyWalker? If so, I feel for you (well I feel for you no matter what you have).

There are three times as many deaths this year in MN. Sixty some from an average of 20-some per year. Most are those over 65, but it is still scary.

Also, flu shots are not a guarantee. I have read 65% effective for adults and 85% effective for children.

I wonder why they don't give the anti-viral medication more often? I think it is called Tamaflu and it is supposed to reduce intensity and duration? I read about doctors giving it, but I have never heard of it given here.

Drink tons of water and other fluids, LW, and get lots of rest so you can enjoy your casino trip Sending positive thoughts your way. 🙂

I'm doubling up on vitamin c, b and Super Lysine. I will swish with some Oreganol. Oh, I read that if you cut an onion (not a lemon) and leave it out, it will absorb bacteria. I hope everyone who is not feeling well gets better soon especially you LW.
