Fast Food: Who's making YOUR sandwiches?

7 replies • Last post

Interesting little lawsuit going on in my community:

I know all this to be true, because I know someone who works for this sandwich shop, and they are forced to either find their replacement or come to work sick. Perhaps that will change now.

Disgusting. People will sell their souls to the devil for a little money. If I see someone sick, hacking or coughing, I'm walking out.

I hate the kind of jobs where you have to find your own replacement. I don't think that is fair AT ALL. I believe it should be the supervisor's job, and if they can't find anyone, then THEY should come in, not the sick employee. I know I have been so sick I would never have been able to make phone call, let alone drag my butt to work sick! 😢

Exactly Hope. It's bad enough being sick.

Yuck. Are workers there not entitled to a minimum number of paid sick days each year?

That is what they are fighting for, CL-Ed. The conditions of those particular Jimmy John's forced workers to come into work when seriously ill.

Its pretty sad that in the 21st century these workers still don't have those rights automatically in a first world country. We're entitled to 10 days minimum each year here for example, no matter what job you do.

What I really don't like is that they have to find their own replacements or they have to come in. It is like that in the Group Home where my oldest son works, too. Now, if you are too sick to go into work, do you really feel like making a ton of phone calls, begging people to work for you? NO! I think that should be a supervisor's job, and if THEY can't find anyone to come in, THEY should have to take the shift, as a supervisor/manager. I resent these places that make employees find their own replacements.

And you are correct that they should have PAID time off when they are ill, but many in that industry work PT and that way they can limit their benefits, including their paid time off. Something DOES have to change!

I know someone who works there and he had to work 15 days in a row one summer in order to make it so he could take a 7-day camping trip, trading days with other workers, etc. Really sucks.
