Second Annual CL Academy Award Competition!

51 replies • Last post

NOT FOUND: side_oscar.jpg
Hello CL Friends!

It is my privilege to announce our Second Annual 2013 Academy Awards tipping competition on Casino Listings! Many members enjoyed this competition last year, so why not make it a tradition? 🙂 All you have to do to win is list who you think will win an Oscar in the categories we nominate.

How it works:
1. Just nominate your winner in each of the categories below in a reply to this thread. The person who picks the most winners scoops the pool. If there is a tie we'll split the pool evenly.
2. The cost of entry is 10 CLchips. If you post an entry in this thread you will be considered a participant and we will deduct 10 CLchips from your account.
3. Every entry contributes to the prize pot. The winner will receive all the CLchips in the prize pot.
4. Entries close at the beginning of the Oscars ceremony which is Sunday, February 24, 7pm U.S. Eastern time (I think that makes it midnight February 27 GMT).
5. You can enter multiple times if you change your mind, but only your last dated post will be used as your entry.

The categories:

Best Picture: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi

Directing: Michael Haneke (Amour), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)

Actor In a Leading Role: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), Denzel Washington (Flight)

Actress In a Leading Role: Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Quvenzhane' Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Naomi Watts (The Impossible)

Actor In a Supporting Role: Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert DeNiro (Silver Linings Playbook), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)

Actress In a Supporting Role: Amy Adams (The Master), Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)

Good luck film fans!

Thanks to hope for her persistence in nagging me to set this and other competitions up. I'll actually try to watch a couple of these films before I make my picks.

I hope to see a few more before I make my choices, too, CL-Ed.

And I was just about to ask if the "persistence" is the same thing as "nagging," but then I saw you used them in the same sentence, lol! Sorry to be a pain, but at least I got results. haha! 😲 😉 🍷

CL-Ed, I wondered who Jacki Weaver was, who is up for Silver Linings Playbook, so I looked her up. Sounds like she is an Australian actress who also played in an Australian mini-series. I am just wondering if you have ever heard of her or the show she was in.

If you go to the IMDB link and scroll down to the user review, it says, "The Australian mini-series was, in my opinion, the best acted, most moving drama ever shown on Australian television. It managed the almost impossible trick of being extremely moving and yet unsentimental at the same time."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081739/

This all has me curious to hear if you have ever heard of her or the show, so I just have to ask.

Hello CL-Friends!

I thought I would post a few helpful links that might assist you in predicting who will win this year's Oscars. Remember, these are just predictions, and last year several by the Huffington Post were actually wrong. So, do you own research, go with your gut, watch as many movies as you can that are on the list, but you might want to also do a little research to balance it all out. Here are two links that may help you.

I hope we have MANY join in again this year. 🙂

Yes Jackie Weaver has been around for ages. She has been in TV series, movies and theatre shows here in Australia. They had an article in the newspaper saying that she was astonished that she had been nominated but I'm pretty sure I remember her saying the exact same thing when she was nominated a few years ago for another movie which I can't recall right now.

I have never seen Water Under the Bridge and in fact I've never heard of it. Too young at the time I suppose!

I am getting very close to making my picks.

I am having the most difficulty deciding on Supporting Actor. I would LOVE to see Christoph Waltz take it, because IMO, he was delightful in Django Unchained, but I have to think like the Academy, lol, and I am not sure they would vote for him.

I hope to see MANY others join in again this year! 🙂

Okay, I will post the FIRST picks. I am going to go ahead and post, even though I am highly conflicted about the category I mentioned above, because I have time to and can always change my mind. So, here goes:

Best Picture: Lincoln

Director: Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)

Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty)

Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)

I forgot to post this link for the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

This resource is complete with trailers of each movie, and scroll over the photos and will show you a picture of who is in each category. I watched all the trailers here:

I still haven't seen any of the movies so I would only be shooting in the dark at this stage. There's still a month to go though so plenty of time I hope!

CL-Ed and All,
If you don't mind watching movies on your computer (I know some are really better on the big screen, for example, I would love to see Lincoln at the theater), my oldest son found us a new movie site, and I am so excited!

He found the site trying to find a way for me to watch End of Watch, cuz it came out this month, but it won't go to Redbox until after mid-February. So after we watched that, I started searching, and so far I have found almost ALL Academy Award nominated movies on this site. I am watching Argo right now! I usually end up watching the majority AFTER the awards show, too, except for what comes out on DVD, because I just cannot go to the theatre that often. Now I will be able to watch almost all BEFORE the awards show comes on. Woot! lol! 🙂

Now that I can actually watch more movies, I also have time to change my mind. I believe the most unpredictable category this year is that best supporting actor category.

And now that I watched Argo, I can see why many are upset that Ben Affleck was snubbed for the Best Director and Best Actor category. Seems to me, if they are going to add more to the best film category they should include director. I have to say it again: it just does not seem right that a movie can be nominated and not its director.

I would REALLY like to see Amy Adams receive an Oscar. She is one of my favorite actresses. She used to play at the twin cities (MN) dinner theater for many years. Her hand prints are at the entrance. I really think she is an excellent actress. I just think Hathaway will probably take it. Maybe Sally Field. She really fought for that role, from what I have read.

Also, have you all seen previews to the The Sessions? I LOVE movies based on a true story, and this one looks SO good. Helen Hunt is nominated for the movie which also includes one of my favorites, William H. Macy.

Check out this page where you can watch ALL the trailers (I posted it above, too):

http://oscar.go.com/nominees

What do you all think about animated film. Will it be ParaNorman or Frankenweenie to take the Oscar? lol!

You can also enter your Oscar picks here:

http://oscar.go.com/mypicks

(I guess you have to sign into FaceBook - of course - to make your picks on that website. I, for one, wish they would provide a second option, but oh well). 😢

That is awesome Ubetcha.

The cost to enter is 10 CL Chips.

I supposed I should set the deadline up until the day before the awards air, which would be Saturday, February 23, 2013.

Thanks, 'Slim!

I just started to post my changes, and for the life of me, I couldn't do it yet. I believe this year will be one of the most difficult, unpredictable years ever. It is difficult to pick a movie without a director (only had wins three times in history without the director) and a director without a movie. lol

Did you see The Master yet? I would love for Amy Adams to win, but I don't think that will happen.

I guess I have to give it another day or two before I post my changes. I think wild guesses will have as big of chance at winning this year as well-researched picks. lol

Okay, I am going to put my NEW PICKS out there (knowing I can change my mind AGAIN, lol!). I really would love to see Michael Haneke win for Best Director, but I am not sure that is going to happen.

Picture: Argo
Director: Spielberg
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain (although I DO think Jennifer Lawrence is going to take this one, I loved Chastain's performance in Zero Dark Thirty)
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (although Tommy Lee could take this one)
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway y(sticking with this one)

This may not be my final picks. We'll see, lol!

Here's my entry. Good luck to all my CL friends!

Best Picture: Les Miserables, although I like Life of Pi

Directing: David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), something I'm unfamiliar with..

Actor In a Leading Role: Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), but I like Joaquin Phoenix to win it and because Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) is kinda overrated.. 🤐

Actress In a Leading Role: Naomi Watts (The Impossible) even though Jessica Chastain has tough nails on Zero Dark Thirty

Actor In a Supporting Role: Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), he freaks me out!

Actress In a Supporting Role: Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), I think the academy has sealed her already.. 😂

Naomi Watts was INCREDIBLE in The Impossible, Ubetcha. Did you like the movie. I cannot imagine going through all the family went through. Another case of truth more amazing than fiction.

It was Amy Adams, as Hoffman's cold, chilling wife in The Master who made the hair on the back of my neck stick up! lol She was amazing, too!

I think it was a very good year for movies.

You don't have to watch them to enter, Lucky Me. I think last year I had only seen maybe three of the movies BEFORE the awards. I don't think many of us have seen them all (well, I have this year, but this is a FIRST for me). There are many sites that offer their picks and their reasoning. Or just go with your intuition. Like I said, I am predicting this year to be an unpredictable year for the awards. lol So, your guess will be as good as any, and we would love to have you join us, but of course that is completely up to you. Just didn't want you to think you have to watch all the movies in order to try your picks. 🙂

This may not be my final picks. We'll see, lol!

I cannot believe how much I am stressing out about this UNPREDICTABLE YEAR, lol! I think the wild card categories this year are DEFINITELY supporting actor and possibly best actress. I keep considering changing my Jessica Chastain to Emmanuelle Riva. Because of her age, Chastain and Lawrence will have more chances. And it could easily be taken by Lawrence. Yet my judgement of the very BEST performance goes to Chastain, my first pick and my favorite to take this. Still.....I told you I was stressing, lol!

Same with Christoph Waltz. This could easily go to Tommy Lee or De Niro or almost any other in that category, but I adored his performance in Djago Unchained and he made me LAUGH!

And Director could easily go to Ang Lee or even an upset with Michael Haneke. People are saying O'Russell will probably be honored in future years, so that would be an upset, too.

Oh, what to do, what to do! lol!

Last year I was pretty firm in my choices and this year is driving me crazy! lol! Don't be surprised if I log in to change these tomorrow: last minute.

This morning's report says that Lincoln and Argo are "neck in neck" and it is impossible to predict which will take it. I might regret changing mine, but as much as I did like Lincoln, my heart belongs to Argo (Argo f*** yourself, lol!)
