UEFA Euro 2020

55 replies • Last post

In the first UEFA EURO 2020 match, Italy beat Turkey 3-0.
When we talk about the favorites for this Euro 2020-2021, I mention the Italian team as the winner of this cup.
What are your predictions on the winner
of this cup?

Can't really say much on this as I'm not interested in sports, but have fun all those who are betting and watching the games 🙂

Well its not looking good for Germany now after their loss to France and also having Portugal in the same group.

Fingers crossed that Christian Eriksen recovers fully. That is a scary thing to see when you're an old man like me who still plays on weekends.

I really enjoyed Netherlands vs Ukraine, and of course Schick's second goal against Scotland. What a goal! Let's see how long this video lasts before it gets taken down... aaand its gone.

On the other hand I tried watching England vs Croatia but that game put me to sleep. I don't know how England can be rated as one of the favourites with the bookmakers.

There are probably 7 or 8 teams that could win it. I'm adopting Belgium this time and I hope they win because they have a very good team and have never won anything major before.

Italy are looking hot with another 3-0 win. I think the commentator said at one stage that they have not conceded a goal for such a long time that they have scored 30 since they last conceded.

Wales had a good win, maybe because they were wearing Australia's kit! 😂 Rumours say they are still looking for the ball outside the stadium after Bale's penalty miss.

The market capitalization of the Coca Cola brand fell by 4 billion euros because at a press conference the Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo said he preferred water to soda While two bottles of Coca Cola, a partner brand of the Euro, were positioned in front of him, he dismissed them before preferring a bottle of water.

Yes I saw that. Did you know that he used to be paid to be in Coke ads? So he's not exactly the man of high principle he's been reported as. The dude will do anything for the money. Exhibit A:

Oh Denmark. I think everyone wanted them to win today after what happened in their first game, apart from Belgium of course. They scored after a minute and the crowd was going nuts. They should have scored 2 or 3 more before half time but they didn't. Then Belgium brings on De Bruyne at half time and he tears them apart. Denmark still they had a couple of late chances to equalise and hit the bar but they couldn't get one in. It was a great game to watch though.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo does not risk any sanction for this obstacle to the organization of the tournament and to the respect of the official sponsors. UEFA indicates that no disciplinary proceedings will be initiated. everyone is free to drink the drinks they prefer.

I've been watching a few games lately after completely missed the start of the tournament so can't comment on Bale penalty miss or Eriksen's injury.

From what I've seen so far France are not that great (at least for me) and despite the misses against Hungary, they needed their usual savior Griezmann to step up and save them the point but a huge mistake in the Hungarian d I thought at the time watching the goal.

Germany - Portugal was quite an entertaining one, thought both teams are not great in defense and what Joachim Löw has done by making that triple sub in like 60th min (getting out of the pitch his best player + Hummels) almost costed them an infarct finish.. especially if that shot to the post has been gone in with like 15min to go..

Don't get me wrong I like a pro active coach who thinks ahead of the time and in long term but those subs have been done at least 15min earlier in my opinion...wonder what would of be the reaction in Germany if the game has ended 4-4 for example...

For me Spain are too young of a squad, I wasn't aware they've rejuvenated the squad completely and I'm stunned that players like Ramos or Pique are not even in the team, the CB position is all about experience (more so at such event), so don't expect them to see them involved after quarters...at best!

Ed has been mentioning Italy and their d record...and we know who their cb's are...

I didn't see all the teams in action so can't really make a prediction still yet.. but could name a few teams I'd like to see winning it and who I'd not enjoy if they're about to win it.

I'll support Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Wales (why not😉) & any other "small" team that could create a huge sensation and potentially win the cup (quite unlikely I think having in mind the subs rules which benefits the largest and better quality squads of the bigger nations.

Not my favourite list; France, Portugal, Spain.

Neutral - Belgium and Russia (unless some of them facing the previous mention 3 in the final)

Oopps...forgot to mention England...let's say they're on the neutral list.

I think it would be quite tough for the Brazilians to do it mate...😜 But you definitely make my day.

Which reminds me of an interview I saw with the ex player Valeri Bojinov (maybe you remember him Ed?)..not the smartest guy on earth... but anyway, he said something like "it would most likely be an European team to win it" 😉

So...I don't think he fancies Brazil either😜😀

There is a show on TV here that has a comedian host that chats to people who work in the advertising industry and they talk about and make fun of ads. Trust me it's a lot more interesting and entertaining than I made that sound. Anyway one time they did a whole segment making fun of all the stupid ads Ronaldo has been in and that one left people almost crying laughing.

Because I can't resist here is exhibit B: the Ronaldo, Shopee, Baby Shark mashup. Even better is that they have obviously paid enough to get him in the ad, just not enough to fly out and be there live for the launch. Enjoy...

But before you accuse him of being a bad actor, here he is showing us his skills starring in Home Alone 7:

Anyway back to the Euros... I'm very excited this morning after watching Denmark hammer Russia and somehow end up 2nd in their group after losing the first two games. Their stadium was rocking. No real surprises in any of the other matches today though. Finland are probably out on goal difference unless they get a few miracle results in the other groups.

Today the most important match is that between the Czech Republic and England, it is the first place of the group that will be disputed. the two teams are currently tied on points.

😂 Only until the 3rd? Don't give up on him just yet. I think he might have a bit longer than that to go.

Here are the R16 games:

Wales v Denmark
Italy v Austria
Netherlands v Czech Republic
Belgium v Portugal
Croatia v Spain
France v Switzerland
England v Germany
Sweden v Ukraine

The 24 team format ensures that none of the big teams are eliminated early but at least we'll see a couple go in the next round. Belgium v Portugal and England v Germany look to be the most interesting. I'd love to see England and Ronaldo going home early... 🤞

I have a soft spot for both Denmark and Wales, it's a shame they will face each other and so early in the tournament too.

For me Germany's defending as a team is atrocious and I'm not sure Löw pushing all the right buttons at the moment so as much as I'd love to see them going trough I think England will win it this time.

Belgium - Portugal will be pretty even contest I guess...so let's see.

Wonder where the upset would came up from...if there's going to be one of course...France game?

Haha I was laughing at their stupidity until this bit...

Quote:

The fans have ultimately lucked out, as France's Round of 16 knockout game against Switzerland will take place on Monday in none other than Bucharest.

So are we in agreement that Czech Republic knocking the Netherlands out is the first big upset of the tournament?

Denmark are really channelling that Christian Eriksen energy into some big performances aren't they? I remember back in the 1990s when they were only included in the tournament because someone pulled out (Yugoslavia maybe?) and then they went on to win it. Surely its not going to happen again. I think a lot of people would be quite happy if it did though, me included.

Wow. Those were a couple of super games today, both with late equalisers and extra time with loads of goals and drama.

I feel sorry for Mbappe. He had a stinker today and then he capped it at the end in the shootout. It really wasn't his day. But I'm always happy to see another underdog go through so congratulations to Switzerland! I wonder if Pogba is still dancing on the field by himself... 😂😭

I haven't seen any of their games in the groups ( I mean both teams) but could agree it was kind of an upset...at least according to the bookies odds.

Yep, agree with you Ed, they were definitely impressive against Wales, or the Welsh side have been that poor, maybe a bit of both....

And yes as much as I don't want to admit that - I'm that old...I remember most of that EURO quite clearly...you're right Denmark have replaced Yugoslavia who were ejected from the tournament because of the war there by the time...I don't believe they would be able to repeat that miracle though...but who knows.

Both 3-3 in regular time...I wonder if someone has been able to make fortune of that...

I don't feel sorry for France at all...think they weren't that good in the group stage too...and if I remember right they won quite a few close games at the last WC...so maybe it was about time.

I wouldn't stay until Pogba's dance anyway...but glad there wasn't one😉

I was making fun of Pogba's over the top goal celebration that went on and on even after his teammates left him to get on with the game. He took all the congratulations and high fives then pretended to inject something into his arm, then hugged and high fived a bit more then danced, then everyone left him and went home and they turned the lights off, then he danced some more all by himself. It was a bit sad really. I got the feeling he thought the game was all over then.

I thought that either Germany or England could have won their game today but finishing separated the teams. Muller and Havertz had a couple of very good opportunities that they missed and that was the difference in the end.

In the other game I thought Sweden were the better team and Ukraine were a bit lucky to win in extra time. Forsberg hit the cross bar then of course there was the red card which gave Ukraine a man advantage which they did nothing with until that great crossed ball right at the end.

So now we have these quarter finals:

Switzerland vs Spain (in St Petersburg)
Belgium vs Italy (in Munich)
Czech Republic vs Denmark (in Baku ... wow today I learned that Azerbaijan is considered part of Europe)
Ukraine vs England (in Rome)

One side of the draw is now stacked. It reminds me of the last world cup where England ended up with a fairly easy run to the semis. They should make it to the final from here. The other side is anyone's guess. Belgium and Italy have looked strongest so far and one of them isn't going to make it past the next round.
