The Champions League thread

We've got a premier league one so how about a Champion's League thread?

I was just about to post "what a goal Suarez" but just now who else but Thomas Muller has popped up 6 yards out to head in an equaliser for Bayern against Juventus. Juve decided to park the bus after a good first half and they have paid the price. It is hard to see Bayern not going on and winning this tie in extra time now.

Geez Bayern will be angry after that game. It was 3-3 on aggregate with about 10 minutes to go and within the next 5 minutes the referee chose not to give Casemiro his second yellow card for a bad foul on Robben, then gave Vidal his second yellow and a red for a good clean tackle that won the ball fairly. Then in extra time Ronaldo scores after being clearly offside when the ball was passed to him. Of course Bayern may not have gone on to win but the refereeing didn't do them any favours.

Never saw the game Ed, but there was too many mistakes in Real and Barcelona CL games lately, not saying refs doing that on purpose but certainly the pressure is huge from this teams and seems like the mistakes always goes in favour of those favourites.

I think today there was quite a pressure from the Barcelona players first half but the ref handle the situation great and after a couple of yellows they left him alone, more so the ref got wrong maybe just once in Juventus favour but nothing serious.
I hate when so called great teams doing that, yeah I realize it's maybe part of the game but there's should be even some valour in the game if you will, City doing that most from the English sides and it's the main reason for me to hate them not because they are Manchester City.

All teams do it. Its a culture of disrespect towards the referees that runs throughout the whole game. Watch a rugby match and you will see players show the referees far more respect. All the referees need to do is to enforce the rules that are already there and punish dissent more frequently and it will stop. But no doubt the clubs, FIFA, and UEFA don't want to see Suarez or Ronaldo or Messi sent off every second match, so they don't do it which is a shame.

Juventus were too smart to get caught out like PSG were. And it is great to see Monaco go through as they are such a young and attacking team. I'm really hoping they can go all the way.

Agreed Ed, my point is that some teams using that aggregation against refs quite deliberately, Man City are perfect example for that over the years, no mater if they loosing or winning they questioning refs every time he takes a decision and if they not influenced him this particular time on the next decision he would think twice or at least they think so, and many times it works.

About Juventus, commentators of the game said it were an old school almost catenaccio like defence from them but I'm not agree, yes they staid around their box for most of the second half but they were forced by Barcelona to do that and if you have to defend better defend well...in the end you suppose to be playing with the best team on the freaking planet on his ground...

Anyway, I'd like to see Atletico facing Real and Juventus - Monaco could be good one too,
Monaco playing some expiring football but I don't think they would have so many chances against the teams left in the tournament like against Dortmund or City - two teams not very well set in defence but Monaco are definitely great team to watch.

So we'll see them in the end...I wish I could predict the scores like that..just for a change.

Anyway, I expect Atletico causing problems to Real, they could revenge about all the close losses in the last years so let's see, Monaco - Juventus should be a close one too but I certainly believe there will be a new team to lift the cup this season, what's yours thoughts Ed, who could win that?

For sheer entertainment I'd like to see Real vs Monaco in the final. But I think we're going to see Real vs Juventus.

Well I hope it would be Juventus v Atletico Ed, don't mind Monaco reaching the final but I think Juventus has far more pragmatic style so they would have a more realistic chance of winning against some of the Spanish sides.
I hated Juventus all my life but this time I'm with them, to say the least Bufon really deserves to win the only missing cup in his collection, Monaco are so good and entertaining that in a certain way they are very efficient too, but I'm sick and tired of Real and Barca, enough ✋
I think Juventus will going to win that...

So Juventus - Real not really a surprise, I would of love to see Atletico instead of Real there but they really struggle against them in the CL last seasons, their record is really pathetic.
Maybe it would sound weird for some but I really believe Juventus will going to win this one, enough Spanish sides, enough Messi and/or Ronaldo... the football is much more than that.

Juventus just weren't good enough in the second half, there was 20 min spell trough it when they literally done nothing and Real scored their 2nd and 3rd which decided the game, I thought Juventus would be a match for Real in this one and could even win it but Allegri was completely outplayed tactically by Zidane I think.

It was a good game, much more open than I expected it to be which was probably due to the early goal. I thought Juventus were very good in the first half, they created the better chances and really pushed Real. Mandzukic's goal was fantastic. But they didn't show up in the second half at all. Dybala and Pjanic didn't have a very good games. I know Ronaldo gets all the headlines but Modric was man of the match for me.

Just saw Liverpool playing today Ed, away to Hoffenheim should be tough, tough game, especially in whole that Coutinho saga, is it CL appearence so important for Liverpool then, except for all that cash that comes with it of course...but otherwise isn't it that just an obstacle in the long run in the PL?
United didn't bancrupt in the lack of CL football, in fact they started spending more so is those CL funds so vital for the overwealthy PL teams anyway?

Yeah I think it can be a bit of a curse actually, unless your club has a huge squad of top players. Look how well Chelsea and Liverpool did last year when they didn't have to play in it. Then again the top players want to play in it. Maybe Liverpool will have more luck in attracting a couple of players if they manage to qualify for the group stage.

Anyway Liverpool got a 2-1 win away from home in a good match. Both teams really went for it and they play a similar pressing style so it was an all action game. It was a shame they let in a late goal but still I'm sure they would be happy with two away goals and a lead.

2-1 is still a great result for Liverpool Ed, and I think the Germans deserved to score when we see their overall performance in the game, 0-2 was a bit hash to them, I saw almost the whole game just without the closing minutes when the German's scored, but you're right it was a nice game, for me Liverpool would of been favourites even if they had lost that one 2-1 but they've done the job already.

Yeah you're right I think players want...maybe more than the club itself to participate in the CL, but I think this should be a tough season for Liverpool despite Klopp makes some of those youngsters to play at their best or beyond...still not enough size and depth in their squad I think.

I personally don't care if United would be out after the group stage, make it to the semis or don't even enter the CL as long as they compete in the PL, then when you won the league 3 times in 4 seasons -let's say,you can throw everything in the CL - trying to win it not just being a presence there.

Liverpool's third goal last night... 😋 (I need a drooling emoji)

These are the champions league groups for this season. I think Liverpool and Man United got kind draws. Group H looks brutal to me and I'd say that Group G looks the most open where any team could win it.

Group A
Benfica (POR)
Manchester United (ENG)
Basel (SUI)
CSKA Moskva (RUS)

Group B
Bayern München (GER)
Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)
Anderlecht (BEL)
Celtic (SCO)

Group C
Chelsea (ENG)
Atlético Madrid (ESP)
Roma (ITA)
Qarabağ (AZE)

Group D
Juventus (ITA)
Barcelona (ESP)
Olympiacos (GRE)
Sporting CP (POR)

Group E
Spartak Moskva (RUS)
Sevilla (ESP)
Liverpool (ENG)
Maribor (SVN)

Group F
Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
Manchester City (ENG)
Napoli (ITA)
Feyenoord (NED)

Group G
Monaco (FRA)
Porto (POR)
Beşiktaş (TUR)
RB Leipzig (GER)

Group H
Real Madrid (ESP)
Borussia Dortmund (GER)
Tottenham Hotspur (ENG)
APOEL (CYP)

Yeah I found sometimes it's pretty tight collection of emojis here at CL, it's hard to express myself 😀

Certainly it's a great draw for Liverpool as they coming from the 3rd pool, they could even top that group, United group is like deja vu on every other their appearance in the CL, CSKA Moscow are always there.
But both teams will have to travel to Russia probably in the winter so that's always tough game especially if there's snowing too.Still they both should be able to go trough these groups.

Yeah third goal was a great one, probably tht's why Klopp cheered like it was 1-1 on agg, before that 😉

The only thing that I didn understand is why Henderson kissed Firmino after the 4th, should it be...the other way round ..if there's have to be kisses at all (on the field I mean 😉 )

Any impressions Ed? Didn't saw any of the games at all, but saw there is one or two maybe partly surprising results, first of all Spartak Moscow hammering win over Sevilla, Besiktas away to Monaco and Spurs drew at Real.
I guess you're delighted with the Liverpool result which gives them a great chance to go trough I think.

Yes I thought that Spartak win was a real surprise, not just the win but the fact it was so convincing. Tottenham got a good result too. Liverpool did well but they will have harder games.

What about today games guys? There are some very interesting matches like Napoli - City and Tottenham - Real.
And what about Sevilla - Spartak? The Russians have a great odd (8.00) considering the first game, I think I can place a small bet on them, what do you think?

Don't know man, CL games are usually pretty tough to predict, but I agree at that odds probably Spartak M worth a low stake.
I think Spurs could win over Real if it's 'their day"...and about Napoli - City really don't know, draw or away win maybe*)

I saw some of the goals, Liverpool have played great obviously but are the Russians really that poor Ed?
You could swallow 4 or 5 but 7-0 is humiliating.
Who would you prefer as an opponent for the next round?
Or should I ask do you want to see them reaching late stages of the tournament at all?

The real test has not come for liverpool, spartak moskva for me is not a suitable opponent for liverpool, but this is a good start for liverpool to move on to the next phase, I'm also impressed with Philippe Coutinho who created hattrick, hh I think they have a chance to meet Real Madrid , a feat that for me is very historic for liverpool is when they meet AC Milan in the Final round champions league, .. nice movie 😀

And What about the last 16 draw Ed,

Of course the three matchups which would bring all the attention would be Real -PSG, Chelsea - Barcelona and Juventus - Spurs but what about Liverpool, Porto should be considered as a beatable opponent but is that their real goal and would a potential progress in the CL would hinder their PL campaign.

I think both Manchester sides and Liverpool have really good chances of progressing and along with the two Spanish grands, of course PSG and Bayern could make this years CL edition one of the most remarkable tournaments in it's history!

I know Spartak were awful that night but don't forget they beat Sevilla 5-1 earlier in the competition. And Liverpool couldn't beat Sevilla. So they are not complete mugs.

That draw threw up some really good match ups, which was always going to happen with some of the big guns finishing 2nd in their groups. I think I am most looking forward to another potential Chelsea v Barcelona classic. I'm quite happy with Liverpool's draw. Porto are a good team but its a very winnable tie.

Yeah I have the slight feeling Chelsea won't be that easy of a rung for Barca, they've never been in the previous games, are they?

Do you expect any upsets?

What about Spurs - Juventus match up, should be exiting too, I think the Italians are favourites in that.

To be honest I'd like to see some different team from Barca or Real winning it this season, enough is enough, but not City though 😉

Its tough to predict any upsets. Would you call Shakhtar beating Roma an upset? I agree that Juventus should be favoured to beat Spurs. Sevilla and Porto could both beat Man United and Liverpool I think. I really feel sorry for Besiktas - they won their group and got drawn with Bayern Munich!

Yeah would be tough to call Shakhtar an upset if they progress over Roma, maybe if Chelsea throw away Barcelona that would be one, expecting tough couple of games for Barca, Conte is a master of the counter-attacking style.

Think Liverpool would go trough and United..I don't know..it would be close there too...many people would call it a surprise if they gone but I think it's quite possible.
