The Champions League thread

We've got a premier league one so how about a Champion's League thread?

I was just about to post "what a goal Suarez" but just now who else but Thomas Muller has popped up 6 yards out to head in an equaliser for Bayern against Juventus. Juve decided to park the bus after a good first half and they have paid the price. It is hard to see Bayern not going on and winning this tie in extra time now.

Rostov won against Bayern today at really good odds, didn't stake it though :\

And what a result in Dortmund yesterday 😲 I've had read somewhere that these 12 goals are CL record, probably they didn't count the preliminary rounds where there are interesting teams sometimes...

Manchester United finally have shown the style that I guess the fans want to see from them in the second half of the game against Feyenord. Rooney scored a goal and made great assist for Mata's goal in case anybody wondering that he's still worth it.
If they keep on that way good thing would happen but I have my doubts...

Ludogorets drew 2-2 away to PSG which was one of the upsets of the night in CL and will continue playing in Europa Leaugue in the spring, the other one was Celtic away draw to Man City, still those can't be classified as a really huge upsets because the favourites were qualified already.

Yeah PSG are having trouble this year with their new coach. They just don't seem to be as dominant as the past few years. They were lucky to get the 2-2 in the end. I loved Cavani's goal - the way he took a gamble and ran to where he thought the defender would head the ball and was there to bicycle kick it in was all class.

Looking at the final group standings just reinforces to me that there are too many games and too few surprises in the Champions League. Ok maybe some of the favourites didn't win their group but there are no real heavyweights that missed out on progression. Leicester did well to win their group but I reckon the only shock is Sevilla finally qualified so they miss out on their annual Europa League trophy this time!

The Cavanni's goal was pure goal scoring instinct, that's all you need as a central forward and...a bit technique to make those bicycle kicks of course 😀 It was a defenders mistake firstly but the great forwards are there to punish those mistakes..

Yeah...Sevilla...this is maybe the only good way to be dethroned, or who knows their streak might even continue... 😉

Wow, Barcelona got hammered by PSG yesterday and I hoped it could be a bad day for Real M too but they managed to turn around their game against Napoli.
Bayern are better side than Arsenal probably but not that's better, I'm amazed how the English sides playing without any confidence in Europe and there's no reason for that having some of the most expensive players in the world plus a huge experience in the Arsenal's case.
I think this could and probably should be a Wenger last season with Arsenal, I heard that he already mentioned something about that but after such performances and results lately there wouldn't be too much Gunners fans who will argue about his leaving...
...just to note that I didn't saw any of the mentioned games...

I saw a fair bit of PSG vs Barcelona and PSG were all over them like a rash. It was a fully deserved thrashing. That Di Maria guy looks like a good player. One of the top premier league teams should try to sign him...🙂

I didn't see this morning's game though but 5-1 pretty much ends that tie as well. Knowing Arsenal though they will probably batter Bayern at home, win 6-2, and lose on away goals.

I never said he isn't Ed 🙂
He's been to the PL already but not in a top side 😉 probably that's why he left 🙂

😂 Ha-ha, I'd bet Arsenal fans would be hapy to see that 🙂 but as I know Anchelotti probably Bayern would win/loss that 1-0 😉

Just watching Man City - Monaco game, it's a crazy match and some people would probably say it's an entertainer but for me it's just ridiculous play in defence especially from the visitors.
They left City scoring 5 from 6 shots on goal which should say everything really, set piece ridiculous defending plus a poor goal keeping cost them at least 3 of the goals.
That game should be about even but Monaco find a way to loose it with 2 goal difference, just to mention that they missed penalty too, would be tough for them to make up for that in the rematch.

Leicester give a fight to Sevilla and they're pretty much in the clash quite surprisingly for me, I thought it would be decided in the first match, so if they go trough in the CL I could bet they'll be relegated.

Juventus won deservedly at Porto and it wasn't surprise I think despite that Portuguese are great at home, they played 10 man trough whole the game after early sent off.

I guess there's no need to even comment the CL results from today,

Arsenal - Bayern 1-5 - Napoli - Real M 1-3

Expected wind for the favs but it's a shame on the Arsenal side, I really believe Wenger would not stay for yet another season.

Arsenal.. my goodness what has happened to them? They really are in a deep hole at the moment. Wenger blaming the referee after the game... come on your team lost 5-1 twice, have some dignity.

Tonight it will be interesting to see if the home teams can turn around their first leg results. I think Dortmund can be confident only being 1-0 down to Benfica. But Barcelona were blown away by PSG last time and its hard to see them overturning a 4-0 loss. I guess if any team can do it they can though. They will need to play with all out attack so it should be fun to watch for the spectacle if nothing else. It would be nice if they scored a couple early to bring the tie back to life and made it interesting.

Arsenal have made 19 in a row CL appearances!! Last 7 seasons though they've been knocked out at the last 16 round!!! So that's persistence in failure or what?!
By the way Wenger always had such behaviour toward the referees, just now he's even more nervous I guess, I think there's big changes in Arsenal upcoming, I believe Wenger would left/fired after the season especially if they stay bellow top 4 places in England which I think is about time to happen after they've been quite lucky few times over the years not to miss the CL spots.

I think both games would be interesting tonight, Barcelona will fight for their honour and who knows what might happen if they score one or two 15-20 min in! The clean sheet will be tougher but a must thing for them though, I'm not writing them off still yet.

Barcelona have done it, do they!
To be honest in the pre-game I expected Barcelona to make life tough for PSG and even being close in the total score but after PSG scored a goal second half I thought it's over.
What can I say, all the money in the world can buy you a character really!
Great result for Dortmund too and they looking great lately.

I almost can't believe that I saw that with my own eyes! I was thinking the same as you. Everyone was. I thought Barcelona had them on toast at 3-0 up but then Cavani scored and PSG started playing a lot better. Cavani and Di Maria should have scored again with golden one on one chances. With 87 minutes on the clock and Barcelona needing another 3 goals even PSG thought the job was done. But Neymar scores that magical free kick and PSG completely shat their pants with fear. Barcelona were given two very soft penalties but still that has to be the best comeback (and the biggest choke) that I have ever seen in a football match. And yes, it was even better than Liverpool v Milan!

Oh and I just thought of this...

Patrick Kluivert! Edinson Cavani! Thiago Silva! Angel Di Maria! Thiago Motta! Julian Draxler! Unai Emery can you hear me? Unai Emery! Your boys took one hell of a beating! Your boys took one hell of a beating! 😂

What an achievement for Leicester City Ed!
Just couple of weeks back I though they are on their way to be relegated from the PL and their CL participation is just a needless extra effort which is only a distraction from their main target.
And how they prove me wrong!
Schmeichel was brilliant saving a penalty in every of the two legs and maybe they've been a bit lucky too but definitely a great effort and let's not forget what team they threw out - the triple Uefa League winners who though understand its not working the same way in the CL.
I think it's also a good statement from the manager that he want to keep the job after the end of the season too.

Kind of curious if Monaco can turn around the result..will be tough, but it's not impossible. Else, I think Atletico will qualify with ease...

And they've done it 👍 Monaco I mean, Too bad I didn't bet on that because my prediction that I posted on a forum was...3-1!
I think Monaco was better team trough the two legs and even that 5-3 in first match wasn't the truth about the game, there was easy couple of goals which really were Gk and defence mistakes...
Today the French side was completely the dominant team first half but they seethed too deep second perion and that almost cost them qualification.. I'd not getting tired to repeat that City are not that good as many people thinking of them, in the PL many teams threat them with a lot more respect then they deserve but in the CL they've had been exposed for many years now!

Yeah you're right, Leicester have done a 180 in a few weeks, which just makes you wonder what they were doing before. Why weren't they trying like this all season? I don't like Jamie Vardy at all. He did the same thing as Nasri i.e. the little head tap when they are pretending to headbutt but are too scared to actually do it. But instead he flops backwards like he had been smashed in the head and conned the referee into sending Nasri off. Sure Nasri is dumb for getting sucked into that but Suarez would have been proud of Vardy's effort.

Monaco, of course they can! What a great tie. 6-6 with the French through on away goals. Atletico did what they are great at, shutting down the game and keeping it tight.

The draw is tomorrow, I'm curious about it, I'd like to see let's say...Barca - Real quarter 😉

With 3 Spanish teams again there, there's really a possibility to channge the name of the competition from CL to SCL 😉

So don't want to see another Spanish winners..unless they are...Atletico Madrid Ed 😉

Who doesn’t like to see let's say Dortmund - Monaco final, couldn't be more entertaining than that 😉 but that could happen only in the ideal world I'm afraid.

For me this is ruing the game. Seriously who want to watch another Barca - Real game? Because there are not enough of this during the year anyway? Meh / rant over.

Certainly not me mate 🙂
Although I guess many or even most of the fans globally would love to see it...but many of those really cheer for the best team out there, regardless which exactly is it.

So here's the draw:

Atlético (ESP) v Leicester (ENG)

Dortmund (GER) v Monaco (FRA)

Bayern (GER) v Real Madrid (ESP)

Juventus (ITA) v Barcelona (ESP)

I think Dortmund - Monaco would be the most entertaining game despite the couple of others which will bring all the attention.
Common Leicester 🙂

I agree about the Barca vs Real. I hope there are some upsets. Juventus and Bayern are two very good teams that are certainly capable of beating those two.

At least we will see one of Dortmund and Monaco in the semis. Atletico vs Leicester... hmmm two counter attacking teams. Lets hope they both don't decide to sit back and wait.

Juventus overplay Barcelona tonight and I don't think there would be another miracle escape for the Catalans this time round, certainly Juventus are a lot more tactically aware than PSG and I think the task is too much for Barcelona now, they just looking ridiculous in defence.

I think It was maybe quite rough decision for Dortmund to have to play less than 24h after the what happened, for me it certainly affected their performance and probably that game should it be postponed for another week.

I saw an Atletico - Leicester game and the penalty that gave the home team the victory should it been ...a free kick really, anyway I think the result is quite fair but Leicester are pretty much in it so maybe an exiting second leg upcoming but those Atletico are hard team to beat...

Bayern missed a great chance to get 2-0 lead after Vidal have missed a penalty but must be said that probably it was unfair decision for Real, anyway Real turned the game around and the Spanish team looks to still sitting very comfort in the tournament despite Barcelona's misery.

You're absolutely right. It was a crazy and inhumane decision to make Dortmund play the very next day after their bus was bombed. What kind of an idiot would make them do that? Look at this interview with Sahin after the game, the poor lad looks like he was still in shock.
https://twitter.com/ViasatFotball/status/852234963281956866/video/1

Looks like Barcelona needs another miracle, this time against Juventus. Can they do it again? The magic eight ball says ... no.

Yes, I guess they've all still been in a shock during a match and Sahin said what I suspected already they just couldn’t thought about football back then, they should really give them at least a week, would be hard to be more but a week to get back to their normal life.

Yes I'm afraid not this time for Barelona mate, not this time, I don't think they playing so good this season to create one miracle comeback after another, the PSG comeback is something which happens once on a decade let's say, to be honest I don't think Barcelona would be even close this time.

Didn't saw the tonight's games but I was surprised by the Real - Bayern scoreine, or at least before second extra time period, I guess Vidal sending off was key to their loss in the end.

Leicester left the tournament but really good performance in the CL despite the tough season they've had in the PL.

I'm expecting Juventus and Monaco to be the other two to join the Spanish sides on the semis.
