The Champions League thread

We've got a premier league one so how about a Champion's League thread?

I was just about to post "what a goal Suarez" but just now who else but Thomas Muller has popped up 6 yards out to head in an equaliser for Bayern against Juventus. Juve decided to park the bus after a good first half and they have paid the price. It is hard to see Bayern not going on and winning this tie in extra time now.

Yes it was on knockout format before they implemented the group stages, don''t remember how far ago it was but the calendar wasn't overload back then.
But as we know the big clubs not only want lesser game in a season but a huger incomes too 😉

In the end would it be so bad if they create their own league of the richest clubs out there?
I know it sounds heretic right now but it's possible I think, UEFA doesn't want to let them go because of all the incomes but what about the fans?
I'm for the traditions in football and sport but there are many people out there who just wants Barca v Real for example but would it be stupid to have 10 Barca - Real matches a season? There was a season in which they faced each other maybe 5 times probably 3 of them in a month period and everybody was seek of that game so it's not a decision to have only the richest clubs competitions I guess.

Some CL qualifiers today. Bulgarian side Ludogorets are on their way for another CL groups appeareance after they won 2-0 with Czech side Victoria Pilzen and are level at HT 1-1.
Some other great games too like Roma - Porto for example, things don't looking great for the Italian side at the moment but still they have some chances.
But really fingers crossed for Dundalk, - huge Irish underdogs who leading at Legia Warszawa 1-0 at HT but too bad they've lost the first one 0-2, still a chance though.

Dundalk didn't succeed in the end but a brave performance by the Irish team, well done to them.

Now it's time for the groups draw, It's funny that Leicester City and CSKA Moscow are seeded in pot 1 while teams like Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Manchester City are in pot 2 🙂

Bulgarian side Ludogorets is once again (2nd time) part of the CL and teams like PSG and Arsenal will come to play in Sofia which is great really.
Last time they were in the CL groups 2014/15 season Liverpool and Real M were their opponents and I could say in 3 of those 4 games it was great performance by the Bulgarian team. Remember those games Ed? I remember Liverpool game in England where the referee blows the whistle for a penalty in the closing seconds and it was let's say a doubtful one against Real M here in Sofia it happens again - I think there was 2 Real penalties and at least one of them was ridiculous against Ronaldo, Real won 2-1 without beeing better team on the field!
Now Ludogorets is even more experienced and maybe even better side so I guess the would cause some problems for the favourites.

Don't think there's group of death in the CL this season, Barcelona, Man City,Mönchengladbach, Celtic looks the most entertaining one.
There's couple of groups when it's really tough to say who the favourites are, Benfica,Napoli,Dynamo Kyiv, Beşiktas
and the other one
CSKA Moskva(RUS)
Leverkusen(GER)
Tottenham(ENG)
Monaco(FRA)

I doubt top seeded in that one CSKA would even qualify for the next stage.

Yes I do remember Ludogorets. They played very well considering the difference in budgets between them and their opposition. I was hoping Dundalk would squeeze in as well but they got beaten in the end. Still, it was a mighty achievement for such a small club to push that far.

I agree on the CL draw - the Chelsea/City group promises a lot of goals I think.

On the league vs cup thing - I certainly don't want to see Barca play Real 8 times a season. You can definitely have too much of a good thing. Keep it rarer and you keep it more special.

Hope to see Celtic winning some games in their group, Brendan Rodgers certainly would love so, but of course would be immensely tough, still I believe they could upset some of the favs, maybe City 😉 at least in home.

I don't think Celtic have a hope really. The Scottish league is so far below the others these days that it is tough for them to rise to the levels of the best teams. Having such a one (or two) sided league does not help. I'll be interested to see how Tom Rogic (very good young Australian midfielder) goes against the likes of City and Barca but I don't expect them to get out of that group.

You was right about Celtic Ed, they were smashed by Barcelona, didn't expect so big loss for them but I guess home team was double motivated because of the loss last weekend.
Didn't watch any of the games though so I can't really comment them but I think it's a good result for Arsenal away to PSG.

Make sure you see the highlights because some of the passing for their goals was incredible. Messi almost walked his second one into the goal. My favourite was Iniesta's volley - if there wasn't a net he might have killed someone in the crowd.

You're right that the worst time to play Barcelona has to be right after they suffer a shock loss.

Saw the highlights and honestly wasn't too impressed Ed, Celtic defence couldn't made it more easier for Barcelona's attack.
There's a huge holes there in Celtic defence and I think 2 or 3 of these goals could be easily saved by any average defence.
Suarez turning volley was the most impressive goal for me (I think it was the 6th) but it was another terrible mistake in Celtic's defence.
For me the British teams as a whole struggling in defence but not as an execution just the whole idea of how the defence suppose to be played is wrong I think.
They didn't tackle the man with the ball most of the times and the defs stepping back even when they are in their own penalty giving too much room for operating on the rival forwards.
I think British players just can't stand on the opposition's way and ruin their game and that comes naturally for them but of course could be trained. Maybe sounds too simple but for me that was always the biggest deference between the British and rest of the world teams and of course stand on their way for a bigger success.
Is not only the defenders job but whole the team of course.
Even teams like Spanish ones who prefer the attacking style changed radically their game in defence in the past 20 years (or at least the better ones, Barcelona is good example) but of course it's still lot easier scoring goals in Primera than in Seria A. The examples of that are many but check let's say Ronaldo's (the Original) stats

It looked to me that Celtic were very tired in the 2nd half. They had a big game a few days before against Rangers and they spent the whole game chasing Barcelona around unsuccessfully trying to get the ball. It really shows how rubbish the Scottish league is. With Celtic not having much competition any more it makes them soft. At least a decade ago they could get some decent champions league results because they had a strong Rangers to beat even if the rest of the league was poor. Its not as if they got picked apart while trying to attack Barcelona, like you said they were totally unable to deal with them defensively in the 2nd half.

There have been a lot of big scores over the past two days which is not good for the competition. Once again I think they should get rid of this ridiculously long group stage. I read a good article about it the other day which sums up the way I think almost exactly.

I understand yours and the author point Ed, it makes a lot of sense.
I think the interest toward UEFA Cup and even CL is much lesser these days and I think there's a need of a change in the format - only knock-out matches - probably a good idea.
I also think that there are too many games which makes people drawing back from the TV screens and the fact there are just too many matches at the moment is one of the main reasons for that I believe.
But whether UEFA will turn toward this direction their tournaments? - honestly I really doubt they will.

Meanwhile MU loosing 1-0 to Feyenord close to the final (I'm not watching the game) but obviously their European failure from the last seasons will reach a new heights I guess.
Maybe It's too early for that but I starting to wonder if Mourinho's job is at risk now?

No UEFA won't change. They are too scared of the most popular clubs breaking away and forming their own league.

I don't think Mourinho cares about the Europa league. I read that he said that he wishes they weren't in it. That kind of negative attitude can only rub off on the players and it sounds like they had a horrible game.

Did you read that before or after the game Ed?

They are always not interested after loosing a game and sometimes even before that 😉

Mourinho have wide enough squad and should be interested in every competition his team is involved, but what I know!

To be fair to Mourinho he said it before the game, it wasn't an excuse he used afterwards. But you can see how the players hearing stuff like that could affect their performance.

I don't know why some teams have this negative attitude towards the Europa. Sure it doesn't have as many glamour teams at the Champions League but the latter stages are very exciting and you can play against some really good teams. Plus if you win it you get straight in tho the Champions League next year.

Yes but the road is too long trough UEFA and could harm your chances in the local league I guess.
I'm sure if there were lesser games in that cup English teams (and some of the others) would it be a lot more serious about it.
Anyway United sucks in every competition 👎 😀

I don't think there were any upsets in this evenings CL (champions league not casino listings 🙂 ) games, expected to see Dortmund winning against Real but obviously they didn't succeed in that and Leicester victory was expected for me because Porto are just not he same strong side they've been trough most of the last ...maybe 15-20 years.

After Gladbach leaded to Barcelona, Celtic to City and Ludogorets to PSG I thought it would be the day of the huge upsets in the CL but none of those happened in the end.
Still the point for Celtic and the win of Atletico Madrid v Bayern could be qualified as a partly surprises I guess.

That was a crazy game between Celtic and Man City. Sometimes thats what happens when you put two teams together that can't defend. I knew you would be happy that Bayern lost at least!

Just watched United today and wasn't fancy at all about their performance, still not sure if they want to be part of this tournament or not.
Seems strange from Mourinho's point of view, if you not interested why you start with 7 or 8 of your first 11?
Firstly they would be tired quickly trough the season this way and secondly you risk someone important (like Zlatan) being injured. In the same time players like Carrick, Ashley Young and some others sitting on the bench since the start of the season and would not be in shape when you need them.
It's a perfect tournament to see all your wider squad in play, which would be great for their condition too.
I think United is not after this cup unless they reach semifinal or something but would be shameful in Mourinho's mind (and maybe not only his) if they don't come out of that group.

Not much to mention for the CL games held tonight, not much of an upsets there.
Lion missed a penalty and lost to Juventus despite visitors played more than 30 min man short, Porto won away to Brugge despite that had been loosing 1-0 deep in stoppage time trough penalty so I guess the fact I've placed a bet on both those loosing teams has nothing to do with that 😉 although from around a month I'm loosing all my bets exactly that way, extremely tough luck lately 👎

Barca, Bayern, and Arsenal all had big wins yesterday, and Atletico Madrid made it three games, three 1-0 victories, so no surprises there apart from Claudio Bravo's overestimation of the size of his penalty area! 😂

From what I saw of yesterday's games it looked like Napoli vs Besiktas was the pick of the bunch with the Turks getting a late goal for a 3-2 win away in Naples. Napoli will be kicking themselves though as they missed a penalty and it was a horrible one. You know when the kicker tries to fool the goalkeeper and just roll it into the other side of the net while the keeper dives the wrong way? Yeah that doesn't work so well when he dives the right way.

What a game for City in the CL, they defeated Barcelona after they were 0-1 down, impressive and it was about time for something big for them in the CL after so many disappointments and I mean not only in current season. Maybe one of the reasons was my stake on...Barcelona 🙂

Ludogorets were 2-0 in front of Arsenal early in the game and on their way to a quite great uoset but the English side show their class in the rest of the game, I think Bulgarian side is nowhere near their form from 2 seasons back and that's one of the reasons for their poor performance in the group.

Yeah this morning I started eating my breakfast and it was 1-0 Barca, 2-0 Ludogorets. By the time I finished and took my son to school and did a few other things it had all changed around. City got a bit lucky with that last goal I think. What do you reckon - handball or not? I think it is a handball because the use of his arm allowed him to cushion the ball and drop it dead for Gundogan.

Have to be a strange feeling watching games at morning 😉

I'm not sure Ed, didn't saw the game just watched some low quality highlights and I think all the City goals were well executed, nice combinations for the first and third and yeah I think the ball bounced kind of awkwardly backwards so it's impossible to tell from the video I saw more so there wasn't slow mo replay 🙂
But I think it's not so easy to control your hands when you falling and probably his intention wasn't to touch the ball with his hand if there was a handball at all, don't think that decided the game despite that didn't watched it 🙂
Barcelona had some tough games in Spain which means they are not so dominant this season so far and like you said, a few times they got lucky so sooner or later you taste from your own medicine 🙂
I think Barcelona is vulnerable this season and it's probably about time for a season without significant cup for them.

Some upsets tonight (this morning 😉 ) in the CL, Real couldn't defeated Legia Warszawa and Juventus drew with Lion at home but Real and Juventus are almost trough so maybe these have to be considered like a partly surprises.
The real upset was Spurs defeat against Leverkusen who are not in great shape themselves so not looking good for Tottenham in the CL as it in the PL lately by the way.
Many people stated Spurs would be PL title contenders and could have good run in the CL too but that looks far away from the reality now, with their physically demanding style I think Pochetino really should use very large squad for his team to be consistent trough longer period and I don't think he's doing that at the moment.
