The Champions League thread

We've got a premier league one so how about a Champion's League thread?

I was just about to post "what a goal Suarez" but just now who else but Thomas Muller has popped up 6 yards out to head in an equaliser for Bayern against Juventus. Juve decided to park the bus after a good first half and they have paid the price. It is hard to see Bayern not going on and winning this tie in extra time now.

Yeah a salary cap can definitely make leagues more interesting and varied. But the problem is getting everyone to do the same. If the premier league brought one in for example, all the players would move to Spain or Germany or wherever else didn't have one. I'm not sure how you can solve that one.

I don't know. Maybe they could look at splitting up the sponsorship money between all the teams in the champions league or premier league evenly instead of giving more to the ones that win. The teams that have the most money mostly win and they get more money which reinforces the advantage over the lower teams. That will probably never happen either, it's too socialist for the guys who all own the big teams. Plus it's pretty clear from the stupid ideas coming from the likes of Agnelli that actual sporting competition is very low on their list of priorities.

I was going to post a rant about how stupid and greedy this European super league idea is.. then it all collapsed as quickly as it appeared. Thank goodness.

But in all the fuss it seems to have been missed that UEFA approved the idiotic expansion to the champions league that Agnelli and co were after. Maybe the super league was all a big smokescreen and bargaining tactic to draw attention away from that while they got what they wanted anyway.

Do you think so Ed!?

When I think about it you could be right...not sure, haven't been following the news lately but even I heard of this...in fact it's already gone before I even heard of the Superleague idea probably🙂

It is hard to say. I mean at first I thought surely they could not be that greedy, presumptuous, and stupid at the same time. They surely could not have thought that all the fans and other clubs would go along with their mad scheme. So I thought maybe it was a bargaining tactic.

But the more I have read about it and the things said by the organisers, it seems they really were serious and really were that far detached from reality. It goes to show how far the game has gone away from the principles of sport towards just money, money, money over everything else.

If that was to be shown on TV..it would be the only reason I'd regret not sawing the game😉

Probably Tuchel thought the same thing about himself before this one...and now I think it's the PSG & City teams who are cursed...but I have nothing to do with that...I swear...ops I meant sware😎

I think Chelsea deserve this victory, the players were perfectly organized and were able to resist Manchester City's offensive will.

A thoughts about some of the yesterday's games...

I thought MU have played their worst game of the season against Villareal and still managed to win the game.. incredible...it's like they trying to prove that they could win a game thanks to an individual talent no matter how badly being managed... i.e despite the manager!

De Gea was by far MOM... but I think United will ran out of luck sooner rather than later.

Never seen any moments of the Juve - Chelsea match but it's definitely a good result for the struggling Juventus side and maybe somewhat of a mini crisis in Chelsea.. who seemed to be one of the favorites in this years tournament as well..!?

I've been watching the first 15min of Benfica - Barca and in fact despite loosing 1-0 by the time I thought Catalans have played quite well creating 3 or 4 clear cut chances but unable to score...that's why I've been surprised to know they've lost 3-0 in the end.

It would obviously be a very tough year for them because of all that happened there but do you believe they should stick with Koeman, Ed or they should get rid of him right now as some people suggesting already?

I only saw Liverpool play this week, so obviously I'm very happy with that!

Barca are in big trouble. They don't have the money to spend on hiring and firing people. This article explains it, but basically they now have the 7th highest budget in Spain and they are only allowed to spend an eighth of Real Madrid's budget this year. And they have a load of players on really high salaries eating up all the budget. I think things are going to get worse before they get better for them.

Yeah, I've checked the article Ed, even before that I've heard they have some financial problems without knowing the details.

For me they're responsible themselves for what happening with the club at the moment.

I mean the Griezmann and the Dortmund guy transfers which I could think of just from top of my head (probably there's a few other) have been ridiculously poor deals moneywise...yeah the pandemic situation surely reflected over them too.. but common...surely the club could of been managed a lot better financially.

For me it's not a big thing if Barcelona would not compete in Spain or CL for a few seasons because of that...and yeah it's easy thing for me to say but in the end their ego to be the biggest club in Europe and the silly money they've been paying on transfers bring them where they are now.

Also they've got one of the best youth academies in the world so you could expect many players would get their chance breaking trough the first team because of the situation which could benefit them as a club in a long term.

In the end I think they'd be all right in season or two time because what's worst that could happen to Barca in Spain.. being second or third ... as a MU fan it's really hard for me to sympathize to them when we're nowhere near top for 8 seasons (and god knows for how long) despite having all the money in the world...

Even you as a Liverpool fan should know...not being champions for how long...30 years?!..this ain't going to happen to Barcelona...they'll compete pretty soon in comparison to that.

Huge congrats to the biggest fan of Ronaldo FC ever lived.. a guy called OGS!
He celebrated that like a CL final win!

Boy, ..I feel sorry for the Atalanta side, they deserved at least 4 points from the two games and got just 1.

Man United's first goal was superb man. That little touch by Fernandes wrong-footed everyone. It reminded me of many years ago when Guti backheeled to Benzema instead of shooting to an almost open goal, one of the greatest set-ups of all time.

But in the end they were very very lucky. That was a good volley by Ronaldo in injury time but did you spot the deflection off the referee's foot in the lead-up and then the little handball by whoever passed to Ronaldo before he shot? I thought the new rule was that the referees have to stop the game if the ball hits them and drop the ball for the team in possession. And the handball was definitely an accident but no-one knows what they are going to do when the ball hits a hand these days so it could easily have been stopped.

Liverpool had an easy win today. I don't know what has happened to Atletico Madrid. They are a shadow of the team they used to be. Still all dirty play and arguments and diving, but they used to be able to back that up with good play. Today they were just useless and if it wasn't for poor finishing by Liverpool and some great saves by Oblak they could have been hit for 5 or 6.

I was worried when I saw Liverpool's group that it would be tough for them to get out of, but they have already qualified after 4 games so I'll take that thanks very much.

Yeah, Fernandes touch was great.. too bad that's all he's done in the game really.

I've been watching the game on an awful web stream so I didn't see properly the equalizer (and I never saw the replays) but if everything you say is true Ed, they've been even luckier than I thought.

I've been watching the Liverpool game on the telly (a lot better quality obviously) but muted, so I've never understood how come the Atletico player was sent off...the straight red looked weird, is this was because of the foul itself (which was not a straight sent off for me) or because the ref has been whistling at the guy but he never came back to face the yellow...but anyway I think that ruined the game which probably Liverpool would of won regardless.

In fact I thought Atletico started the game decent but the first goal just kill them off.. and to be honest I thought the refs have been harsh on them in regards to the red cards in both games but saying that Liverpool would of still dominate this group even if they've drew or lost the previous one in Spain.

Yeah the sending off was a bit strange. I think the referee pulled out a yellow card then changed his mind to a red. The commentary that I heard seemed to think it was a bit of both reasons - the foul and the refusal to come to the referee when asked and also the way he sort of flipped the ref off with his hand. But at half time they asked the referees and they said it was just the foul.

So I thought it was probably a bit soft. But when I saw it again he's deliberately tripped Mane with one foot after being beaten and then studded the back of his leg with the other foot, so he had 2 goes at him. Not many refs would probably have given a red but I don't think he should complain. They probably should give out more reds for stuff like that to make players think twice about doing it.

Tomorrow in the Champions League will be a rather boring day, in three groups all the teams that have reached the playoffs are already known and only minor issues remain to be resolved. But Group B is just on fire, three at once have almost equal chances for second place, and I would not dare to guess which lucky one will win this fight. Although Liverpool may want to rest their players before the match against Aston Villa and will only use reserve players which will give Milan some advantage.

Yeah, hope Milan could get trough but obviously they would depend from the Porto's result as well and a win could not be enough, I'm expecting some turnarounds tonight...should be interesting in this group.

Didn't watched the game but I've heard Liverpool have completely dominated Milan... with practically their B team...that's probably not a good indicator of where the Italian teams are right now but at least I hope the early Europe exit could help Milan in their Seria A campaign... just maybe.

To be honest I'm now more exited about the Monday's last 16 draw than for the tonight's games...we still have to figure it out which exactly will be the rest of the teams that will go trough and who will top their group but if I'm a PSG or a Chelsea/Juventus I'm thinking some of the teams in the RB Salzburg group or Man United... would not be that bad of a draw!😉

Today is a key day for the Spanish teams in the Champions League. On the one hand (if Barcelona and Sevilla win, and Villarreal at least does not lose) La Liga can be represented by five teams in the playoffs. On the other hand (and this option seems to me much more likely), all three can be eliminated, and for Barcelona this will be the first time since Autumn 2000 ...

Someone said City will pull out Wigan again...well almost..!

In fairness United were in an easier group compared to City and Liverpool but like usual the draw has been pretty harsh on them, the same in the FA Cup 3rd round.

On top of that I didn't watched it but I've heard they've messed it up...the CL draw I mean.

Oh yeah I read that they messed up the draw completely and had to redo the whole thing an hour later. Either way Man City still drew Wigan - originally it was Villareal but now it is Sporting Lisbon.

Much laughs from me after hearing that Real Madrid drew Benfica 😀... then they got PSG in the redraw. 😭

How about Barcelona.. they drop into the UEFA League and they drew Napoli. I don't like their chances.

Yeah, exactly Ed, I'm not even sure a "redraw" was even a term before yesterday.😉

I've been following it live (the first one) on one of the United's Youtube fan channels and the guy there has been moaning about the tough luck of United...I would of laugh my ass off if they've got PSG the second time as well...😀..almost.. they've got the 2nd toughest ...or maybe even a worst draw than PSG!?

But what else the UEFA could screw up...they've been setting a new 'heights' with that and I've been even sceptic they will redo it...cause a Ronaldo- Messi clash would of been a blockbuster.

Of course Real got the worst of it but maybe Liverpool should be a bit unhappy themselves? Even though still a strong favorites against Inter.

Definitely teams like Bayern, Ajax and even Atletico could be happy with the second one.

Juventus lucky both times...but common no one could be compared to the Draw City Kings.

Someone said it had to be redone not because of United's ball has been missing from one of the bowls but because Arsenal's has been missing in all of them!! Arshavin should of known better!😉

And in the end I thought Real M wanted a superleague... now they've got a super-cl league clash!

So... we're back with a Liverpool vs Real Madrid final this year. I'm happy with that for obvious reasons. Since they last met Liverpool are a lot stronger and Real are probably a bit weaker so I'm cautiously and quietly optimistic. Though Liverpool have a lot of hard games to get through until then so that situation could change due to injury or something.

Shall we have a moment of silence for Man City and one of the all time great sporting chokes? Nah... Bwahahah ahahahahaha ahahahahahahah 😂

Not to mention my German faves Frankfurt are in the final of the Europa league. I could do the personal supporter double this year!

Probably the right set of mind Ed...don't forget Real have been an underdogs in all of the previous knockout stages...and they still managed to progress... despite being outplayed for the biggest part.

I can't really make a prediction cause I've seen jest a few moments of the whole tournament so far...but let's see.

😞😕😢😭...Common man!...Pep do not deserve that...!!... But City do!!!😂😂😂

I'm having a tough time trying to solve a mat question here;

1Ch L trophy = to how many barrels of petrol?

According my calculator the answer is...
10000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000 ...and keep counting....😉

But in the end it might appear ...that's just not for sale...I hope so anyway.

Yeah.. congrats on both of your teams reaching the finals...although I suspect you'd rather prefer to be congratulated after their respective last games in the particular tournament.

Hope to be a fun to watch game between Rangers and Francfurt.

Well I have to say it has been a good week to be a Liverpool and Frankfurt supporter. 😂

Frankfurt should have won the game in normal time as they had 2 or 3 very good chances they missed while Rangers offered almost nothing aside from their goal that came from an error. But then Rangers could have snatched it in extra time. Those 2 save with the legs from Trapp were critical. The first one in extra time was incredible when Kent looked odds on to score and then of course he did it again in the shootout.

🏆🏆😍👍
