The Champions League thread

453 replies • Last post

We've got a premier league one so how about a Champion's League thread?

I was just about to post "what a goal Suarez" but just now who else but Thomas Muller has popped up 6 yards out to head in an equaliser for Bayern against Juventus. Juve decided to park the bus after a good first half and they have paid the price. It is hard to see Bayern not going on and winning this tie in extra time now.

Aaaand nice goal from Thiago to give Bayern a 3-2 lead in extra time. And another one from Kingsley Coman who is on loan from Juve of all places.

There's usually a clause in this loan deals which not let the player to participate in a game against the team who owns him so it's really a huge mistake by Juventus, this is so ironically. I must admit that I didn't watch the game but probably Juventus should kick themselves for not qualified after 2-0 lead...?

Nice thread Ed, I must admit I'm watching CL mainly because of MU and this means not viewing much CL football in the last years πŸ˜‰ But I promise to start watching more games and be more accurate when I comment here πŸ™‚

I was watching Barcelona play but when Suarez scored his volley it was all over so I switched to the other game which was much more exciting. Juventus only have themselves to blame. They were just trying to sit on the lead but they could not hold out Bayern who were attacking relentlessly in the 2nd half. They were lucky to even make it to extra time really as Bayern had a number of chances that if they could have converted would have won it in normal time.

I know what you mean about your own team not being in the Champions League. πŸ˜‰

To be honest I find the group stage pretty boring but once it gets to the knockout rounds is when the excitement starts.

Oh and I must mention my other team Sydney FC who, despite being completely rubbish this year, somehow managed to win away in Korea last night in the Asian Champions League and are now leading their group.

Congrats for your team success Ed πŸ‘
I was wondering who I'm going to support in the CL from now on because only Arsenal are a team that I kind of like from those who were involved and now would be even tougher... πŸ€”

Congrats for the Liverpool win Ed, I wasn't sure in which tread have to post that but since Liverpool have a CL hopes for the next season trough Europa League so decided to be in CL post πŸ™‚
Coutinho scored a great goal but it was a little too easy against this United defence, anyway I think the clash was decided in the first game and Coutinho goal just finishes off the things.

Yes no need for a Europa League thread!

That was a great goal from Coutinho, such a clever finish. After that it was all over.

Here's thedraw from today, I think we have three pairs with a clear favourite and maybe in one very even teams but all games promising to be interesting and I don't believe there will be an easy game for any of these teams.

Wolfsburg(GER) v Real Madrid(ESP)

Bayern Munich(GER) v Benfica(POR)

Barcelona (ESP) v AtlΓ©tico Madrid (ESP)

PSG (FRA) v Man. City (ENG)

Don't worry Sharpe. That is a classic spammer tactic. They copy and paste other people's posts and try to slip their links into them, or they plan to come back later and edit the comment to insert a link when they think no-one will be watching. However we're not dumb so we don't allow comments to be edited after a few minutes for that exact reason. So its just a waste of time for these scumbags. Bye bye tinhkt5491.

Ok putting my long distance predictions on the line:

Real Madrid (should have too much firepower for Wolfsburg)
Bayern Munich (same as Madrid)
Barcelona (just .. this will be the most interesting tie)
PSG (Man City have clocked off for the season already)

I hope that I am not right and we see an upset or two, but I just can't see it happening.

It looks like there are three clear favourites and the forth one is PSG-Man City game which is a bit tougher for prediction although City are not quite the same team this season. But it would be quite boring ( and rarely happens that way) if all the favourites got qualified so I'm going to risk and say that there's will be an upset, still not sure in which clash but even if it sounds stupid I'm ready to bet some cash on Atletico against Barca 😜

Oh yes Atletico are quite capable of beating Barcelona. That is the tie that I am most interested in watching. It should be great!

I would love to see Wolfsburg win.

And why not, at least in Germany, the problem (at least one of them : ) I think is that they don't have enough experience in this tournament and it looks Real starting to walk up (do they) after Zidan appointment beating 4-0 Sevilla yesterday. I'm having a strange feeling it wont be a Barca's year this time, at least in the CL but of course someone have to beat them...but who?

Tomorrow begins the quarter finals. Barcelona - Atl. Madrid and Bayern - Benfica. I think i will chose the first one to watch, and i just hope it will be a result that will let some chances for Atletico in the second leg. About Bayern - Benfica, i think there will be no surprise

There are clear favourites in both matchups, but I don't think it would be easy for the favs though, no need to mention how tough team to beat is Atletico Madrid and Bayern are not in the best of shapes lately so could be quite interesting in Munich too.

PSG - Manchester City and Wolfsburg - Real Madrid tonight. I will definitely chose the first one to watch today. I also have a bet in play on this match and i am absolutely sure it will be a very spectacular match.

Wolfsburg on their way to make a greatest surprise at this stage, leading 2-0 to the mighty Real, still time to go though, hopefully they'll hold on that result.

Great result for City tonight, maybe it's kind of unexpected as bad they are in the PL but this would be their huge break in the CL or at least looks like right now.
And what about Woflsburg πŸ˜• I expect they could cause some trouble to Real but not a 2-0 clear victory, this is huge tournament result and won't be easy for El Galacticos to get back in the re match.

Let's make it Europa League thread for a while πŸ™‚
Congrats for the Liverpool nice result and performance Ed, I've watch the game just partly but was able to saw an amazing triple save from the Dortmund keeper in the beginning of the second half, from the moments that I saw Liverpool has played pretty decent but I guess you could tell more, happy with the result?

Sorry guys, I have had an awful cold for nearly 2 weeks now. I haven't been able to watch any of this weeks matches as I have been enjoying my sleep in the early hours of the morning.

Anyway, great results for Wolfsburg and Man City. I hope the Germans can hang on in the second leg. As for Man City you never know, they could win 3-0 at home or lose by the same score as they are so erratic at the moment.

I think Atletico got a good result too. 2-1 away to Barca is no shame and they are very capable of winning 1-0 at home. Torres was a bit unlucky to get sent off, but Suarez was lucky not to. Crazy ex-Liverpool strikers...

Liverpool had a good result, Like you said, from what I read they could have won it if not for Weidenfeller(?). I'll have to watch the highlights tonight.

Since the cups are played less we can have this thread for both..... Liverpool played well and it seemed Origi could pass his man whenever he felt like, especially that triple save from Weidenfeller was due to his directness.. But liked the fact that English teams want to win Europa....never understood why teams strive to finish 5th or 6th claiming they would love to play in Europe the following season only to field weakened teams during the tournament πŸ§›

Quick recovery Ed!

Hope you feeling better now Ed, yeah those were quite a saves from Weidenfeller, I think everything you say about City could be said for Liverpool too. πŸ˜‰
About Wolfsburg I think they could do well in the second leg game if their tactics is not too defensive since the 1st minute of the game.

Too much firepower... bah! Come on Wolfsburg!!!!

I think Barcelona are in trouble too. Atletico are playing well and Barca have now lost 2 league games in a row. Something is not right there and the pressure is back on them.

I just realised that I am going camping for 3 days this Thursday so I'm not going to be able to see Liverpool play Dortmund. :'(

As I'm writing that it's 2-0 for Real close to the half time so your thoughts about this Ed could be quite right,
I think Man City will progress, it's long waited break trough for them. Maybe it's about time.

Well it's a shame that Wolfsburg left the tournament after that wonderful result in the first game but when you enter such game with great advantage from the first match is always crucial to not allow the opponent to score in the first 15-20 minutes of the game when it's the initial home pressure. Wolfsburg allow Real to score not only once but twice and it was vital for the end result.
Not surprised by the City progress by the way.

Well, Real ended up having too much firepower after all!

All the news articles are saying how wonderful Ronaldo is for scoring a hat trick but I think that is being far too generous. The first goal, a tap in after an ordinary cross somehow squirmed its way through 3 or 4 defenders who could have done a lot better. The 2nd goal was a very good header, full credit there. The winner however was a badly hit free kick that luckily went through the only gap in the wall because one of the Wolfsburg players turned his back on the ball. He did not mean to do that at all. You need a bit of luck in the tight games and Ronaldo sure got his share tonight. Anyway regardless of how they got the goals, I think Madrid were deserving winners in the end.

Man City sure surprised me. I thought they might have cracked after Aguero missed the penalty but they stayed competitive and got the win in the end.
