Simona Halep is must popular in WTA for the second year in a row.Simona had her best ever season, finishing at No.2 on the year-end WTA Rankings .

She's one of my favourite players, hopefully she will have a better season after not so convincing performance last year, definitely a player that deserves a lot of respect and I hope we didn't see the best of her still yet.

WTA seems wide open since Muguruza is 5th and had a 4R Q F 2R form in the grand slams last year, Simona(4th) didn't do better either. Entertaining, you may say, but hard to bet on!

Yeah it looks more open this season and I certainly hope it will stand that way. What Angelique Kerber do at Australian Open final and trough all the tournament really was amazing and it was great for the game I think.

Yes it would be great to see more players wins the GS and the other big tournaments. I've had never liked Serena too much but even if I do would be sick of that domination.

WTA Madrid final today between Cibulkova and Halep. I hope to see a victory for Halep, she didn't had very good results in the last months and winning this tournament will give her a good morale for the future.
PS: Romania had 4 players on the quarter finals and even if Halep will lose today it will still be a good tournament for Romanian tennis.

Simona Halep beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-4 to win the Madrid Open! It was a nice match to watch and the Romanian player has now won 12 WTA Tour titles, I hope to see her winning a grand slam tournament soon

It was exiting day for me at Roland Garros today, despite the bad weather which allowed just few matches to be proceeded the Bulgarian girl Tsvetana Pironkova beat in 4th round the N2 seeded Radwanska.
Other player who I like the Australian Samanta Stosur also progress in the tournament by defeating in straight sets another high rated player N 6 seeded Halep.
Congrats to both girls, the only problem is that they will meet each other on the quarters, too bad because these are the two I support.

Samanta Stosur won in a close game in the end so congrats to her and good luck in the next match which would be a semi final, great success for her and I think she could reach even further, so lets see.

Stosur has had a rough time lately after making the US Open finals a couple of times a few years ago and from memory I think she won it against Serena Williams in the final one time? So its good to see her doing well again. Her match is scheduled for 9pm tonight here so hopefully I'll be sitting down to watch her later tonight.

Have you seen her arms? She has mega shoulders and biceps. I know the picture below is a bit distorted because she's in the middle of hitting the ball but still... I would not want to arm wrestle her. She would probably snap my arm off at the elbow!

Joking Yeah you probably right Ed, I would not want to arm wrestle her either Joking
I think many people doesn't like her because of that body clamming that it's not too much lady-like but in the end she's an athlete and very well fit one so I think fitness is vital in quite demanding sport like today's tennis.
I pretty much like her and I'm glad for the progress she made lately, and although she lost the match today it was a nice run for her at Roland Garros and hopefully Samanta will continue to do well in the next tournaments.

There has been talk about steroids and I don't think anyone would be surprised if true. But who knows? She was outclassed in that match. She hit some good shots but every time she got to an important point it seemed like she double faulted or hit an unforced error.

Yeah Stosur is not the most steady character in even situations but like we saw on the final Muguruza played very well and she'll be a future multiple Grand Slam tournaments winner I think.
And about steroids I doubt Samanta would used something which is in the banned medications list, it just doesn't worth the risk of loosing everything, have to be quite stupid to do that and what about Sharapova who hasn't such a biceps but still was caught cheating Wink

Maria Sharapova was suspended for 2 years and according to Forbes her loses could be as huge as 50$ mill, not that money are most important thing here but still...
I just can't understand why she did that, risking everything with no much of a reward I think, could be even the end of her career.
Here are some quotes from Forbes' Kurt Badenhausen:
"The suspension, which is backdated to January, has massive financial implications for Sharapova, who was the world's highest-paid female athlete for 11 straight years before Serena Williams took the crown this year,"

(Sharapova) has earned $285 million during her career and averaged $25 million in earnings from prize money, appearances and endorsements over the past seven years. The suspension could cost Sharapova $50 million in lost earnings over the next few years, on top of her climbing legal bills,"

I'm sure she won't miss the money. That is pocket change to her. But the estimate for the next 2 years is simplistic and ignores the reality that her reputation is trashed so she would likely earn far less for the rest of her life. She'll just have to content herself with her hundreds of millions, poor thing. Wink

Yes I'm sure she'll regret about all that story in the next couple of years but probably you could appreciate what you've had in full only after you lost it. But I'm sure she'll survive somehow Wink

Wimbledon semi finals tomorrow,

Angelique Kerber - Venus Williams

Serena Williams - Elena Vesnina

Looks like Serena will not have a problem to reach the final, while I hope in the other one Kerber will spoil Williams party for the final.

Nothing strange happens at the semis in the end, Serena won too easy against Vesnina 6-2, 6-0 and Kerber 6-4 6-4 with Venus so the too favourites on the final. I think Serena will take revenge for lost Australian Open final against Kerber earlier this year. Will be great if Angelique could do something about it but I doubt.

Serena finally won hers 22 Grand Slam title which equals Steffi Graf's record, I said finally because she was favourite in all three occasions in which she lost previously not because she's my favourite player just the other way round Wink

Serena Williams is a machine. So many of the women players come and go at a very young age but she just keeps on going. I think its only a matter of time before she breaks Court's record for grand slams (24).

I think you're totally right Ed,
she's never been one of my favourite players because of hers physical dominance on court ( physics became the most important aspect of tennis in the last decade, which is sad I think - Surprized iturn it into so long bracket Joking) but she definitely deserves some respect for what she's doing.

Halep played well but not well enough against Serena, she lost her confidence in the final set and I think it's quite logical when you have only a single win trough whole of yours career.
Don't see anybody stops Serena for yet another title but let's see, she has to face in form Pliskova at the semis and someone from Kerber/ Wozniacki at the final so there's still a chance...I guess.

If Serena plays at her best no-one can beat her. She is too skilful and powerful for them. The others have to hope that she has an off day or she switches off mentally, which can happen now and then. But still its a tough ask, she's probably the best women's player of all time.

Obviously she had that bad day Yesterday Ed,
For me she's no doubtfully the most successful women's player but that not necessarily means the most talented one - in fact just the other way round in this case, never liked her style, she still looks redicilous in some points (often enough)
It's one thing when you're out muscle and out scream your opponents, her's phisical superiority is obvious and that makes most of the matches a lot easier for her. I don't think she had real opponents in the last years, maybe Serena isn't so good but the others doesn't show the required level.
I don't like the talent level in the women's tennis in the past decade and even more maybe, but that could be changed,Pliskova who beat Serena yesterday is a good example and there are other young fresh players.
Meanwhile the bad day(s) for Serena had become quite often thing in the last year and I expect this tendency will continue to raise.

Maybe she played her final one game too early, although with the win Kerber is now ranked number 1. Did you see the match? I missed it and only saw a set of the men's final.

Me too Ed, missed the final and waited for a replay Saturday night and Sunday till afternoon but finally knew the result accidentally Erm
Anyway from the highlights it looked quite a contest but I guess Kerber won over Pliskova because of her greater experience in this kind of matches.

Not a fan of "Stan the man" Wink
