Fantasy Sports for Money

11 replies • Last post

My Lions have clinched a place in the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2011 and only the second time since 1999. To celebrate, today I am trying a new type of betting: fantasy sports.

I'm participating in a one day league at a spot called Fan Duel, where you get $60,000 to draft a team. Obviously good players cost more, so you have to build a team based on match ups and such. I played two $5 one day leagues today.

I'll let you guys know how i do! Have any of you tried something similar?

I've played fantasy premier league games but never one that only lasts for one day. Usually you pick your team and stick with it for the entire season, trading players that get injured or lose form etc. Picking a new team every week sounds interesting.

Its the new craze around here in the States, and is interesting because it appears to share a lot of the same components of online gambling. Right now I am in the middle of the pack but I have 14 quarters to go, so I should end up at least winning my money back.

How does it work in terms of winning money? Do you have to get a certain number of points, or beat a certain percentage of players?

The pay table differs for each league you participate in, kind of like a slot tournament. In the one I am participating in this week first place takes $50, second takes $35, third takes $20, fourth $15, and fifth through tenth gets $10.

Some prizes in games are bigger than others. There was a dude who won a million bucks last week playing because some guy caught a touchdown in a meaningless portion of the game.

Its nutty.

So you're in on this too Strongbow? A million bucks sounds good. I guess they must have loads of people playing.

I'm actually liking the idea of single day games. I started in an English premier league one at the start of this season but forgot about it for a few weeks here and there so I am miles behind with a team full of injured or benched players and no chance of catching up and winning the league I am in.

Let's put it this way Ed. I finished just outside the money as one of my players came up injured and left the game at the half.

Oh well. It was still fun to play! I think I will stick with traditional betting for the playoffs though!

It depends on the league. Some have limited numbers, some have thousands. You find out by clicking the league you are interested in.

I'm not too tempted by the DFS betting although it could be an interesting experience. Fantasy sports become in a huge business in the last years, especially in US when the sports betting is not legal in some of the states as far as I know. This is sad but I guess explains why fantasy sports is so popular these days.

Yes and I remember reading recently that someone is now trying to ban that too, saying that it is another form of gambling that people need to be saved from.
