Euros 2012

35 replies • Last post

Spain still looking good but have other teams evolved a winning strategy against the iberian game?

Who's gonna win?

Also > Super odds from one of the Uk bookmakers on 2 classic english habits. I will be backing them both...

7/1 on England going out on penalties... 😈

2.5/1 on an England player seeing red and being sent off.... ✋

I gonna be a millionaire... 🤑

I am pulling for either England or the Netherlands to take it all.

I am not a big fan of Rooney, but I hope he or Gerrard puts England over the top.

For those wondering, being American, I am rooting for England as my best friend is actually from there and he moved over here when he was 10. He and his family got me into the World Cup during 2006 and I have been hooked ever since.

My three teams are USA, England, and the Netherlands.

Are you taking those bets, yellowboots? Are you placing any other wagers?

My money would be on either Spain, Germany or The Netherlands to win it. But the good thing about the Euros is just about any team can win it if things go their way. It is probably harder to win than the World Cup. I remember Denmark winning the tournament years ago after being brought in as a last minute replacement for Yugoslavia (I think?) who were booted out.

I love the bets on England. As an Aussie I love seeing them fail to live up to the hype and unrealistic expectations every tournament. Its the finest quality schadenfreude. I might be biased (just a little!) but I reckon they are nailed on to go out in the group stage, so I don't like the chances of winning a bet on them to go out on penalties!

Years ago an English workmate was talking about football with me and she said "if Australia isn't playing in the match you would support England wouldn't you?" She was quite serious. I said "Are you kidding I would support Iran before England." (Australia had been knocked out of World Cup qualifying in a heart breaker by Iran). She was quite honestly perplexed that us folk in the far away colony would not support the motherland!

Poland and Greece had a draw and Russia smashed the Czechs 4-1 last night.

Top scorer bet hints? With decent odds? Also any other mix and match multi-bet ideas I am well up for. The more insane the better... 🥳

In the Euros not the War on Terror Ed 😂 ..... jeez, these australians lol.......

Haha @yellowboots. What was your take on England's tie against France? Would you consider the tie to be a win for England?

I sure hope they don't play that style from here on out. It was a bit too passive for my taste. Maybe things change a bit when Wayne Rooney comes back.

Hi Slim,

Haha yes the game was nervy in the final 3rd but one thing is for sure the French did not expect to draw, they were very confident of a win > read Laurent Blanc's comments before the game . and they call the Brits arrogant 🤷 . Anyhow now the Parisian press is going ballistic 😠 :'( :'( :'( : 😠 '( :'( : 😠 '( :'(

In a nutshell I think Hodgson really has his head screwed on. Relying on attack and defence units that play week in and week out together in the premier league is a good move ie Terry/Cole & (Rooney)/Welbeck/Young > esp in the Euros. These footer boys are no geniuses and so it makes sense to keep them in a good comfort zone and Hodgson is a salt of the earth character who connects with the players well. He has the demeanour of a grandad in the pub which is what the boys need in a competition.

Combine these boys with youngsters like Oxlade-Chamberlain etc for a bit of pace and the heart of Gerrard you have a team that I think will fox many pundits and fans alike, especially as everyone in England expects them all to be toast by the end of the group stage so the pressure on them is not what it usually is...

I think they will get better as they grow more confident but then of course they will still get knocked out by the Germans on penalties hence i sure did put my tenner on that one..... so at least I can make some cash to compensate for the heart attack England always give their fans...

Rule Britannia Ed lol,

🚬 & 🍺

PS. Italy looked good against Spain - wonder how far they will go before imploding this time?!? And Balotelli doing his nut lol?

I have to concede that England did well. Boring but effective, and reminiscent of the rubbish that Hodgson had Liverpool playing. But that can be good in a tournament when you're in a tight group.

Mario Gomez's two goals were very nice, although I thought the keeper went down way too early both times.

You're right that Italy looked good against Spain, but they just drew with Croatia after giving them a hiding. Italy should have won by 3 or 4. They should be right though as they only have to beat Ireland in their last match and they will most likely be through.

The big surprise for me has been The Netherlands. They are almost out of it now barring a miracle.

How are you feeling about the Sweden match yellowboots? I might have a small bet on the Swedes 😉

As usual I reckon it will be a standard nerve racking display from the boys in white Ed lol, leading to many other boys in white (cardiac emergency doctors) all over England having a busy evening .... Gerrard is talking up his team's chances and they should win but if even they do it don't think it will be pretty and if the Swedes show some Viking determination in the second half then it could be curtains......

Wish we still had Ga-ga 🥳 Gazza 🥳 . Remember him? He was a nut but just what England need right now!

Cheers mate 🍺

Ooops I forgot to add.... your bet on Sweden lol >

.....dare i admit it but I have put 2 bets on both teams coming from behind to win. Odds are 15/1 for the Swedes and 11/1 for England...

Wow. Should be a great game. I am thankful that the game is on at 2:45 PM my time today so that I can check it out. I just wish I could get a bet in with a sportsbook now. All of mine have restricted measures so heavily on American deposits that it is just nuts.

Good luck on the bets fellas! Let us know how they shape up!

Great England won, although financially it would have been 4 points better for me if Sweden had swung it... & I was absolutely spot on about the overtime in the cardiac wards, the 3 lions never let us down on that one! 😕

Looking for good odds tomorrow on a riot in the stands by the russian fans to keep my winning streak on a roll... maybe the odds will be too slim to make it worthwhile though... oops.... 🤐

Sun and stuff and hurricanes and the odd earthquake so life is never a bore my viking friend 😲

Haha I wasn't so far wrong geographically in thinking you were russian! Finland's a great country - been there many times! How far north are you? Hopefully not so far that you never see the sun in the winter - mind you a few shots of finnish vodka can put anyone into hibernation so I guess it must be okay even if there is no sunshine for 6 months.

Who are the Finnish stars we should look out for during the Olympics? Not too hot on the spelling of all the names you guys have so no doubt will mess up the betting slip, but any nods in the right direction would be fun to know!

All the best from the sunshine 🍷

I only saw about 5 minutes of highlights of the England v Sweden game and I'm disappointed I didn't see the whole thing. It looked like a very exciting game. Wellbeck's winner was a special goal. Luckily I didn't put a tenner on it - I'm impressed with your bets on either team winning from behind though!

France and Ukraine was funny. The French were untouchable at times. At one point in the 2nd half they passed the ball back and forth and around just outside the Ukraine penalty area. The fans were whistling and booing but Ukraine couldn't get a touch. They eventually shot and hit the post. It would have been a spectacular goal.

How about the Greeks and the Czechs pulling it out of the fire last night too? The Russians must have thought they were through after their first two games. I bet UEFA are happy they are out now.

Haha > about the Russians, indeed Ed, a few sighs of relief from UEFA...

Spain looked a bit wobbly yesterday don;t you think? 🤔 ... Germany now on tighter odds to win the whole thing, 3.10 (to 3.25 for Espana)... 😨 😨

Today I reckon it will be another rollercoaster ride from the English, and so again I will be placing bets on both teams to come from behind because both teams have a penchant to collapse and revive haha 😂 , (Standard english tactics this as Ed will know from english cricket teams, although 99% of the time they forget to revive....).. Odds are, hang on 🖥 ok 10.1 for the 3 Lions and 13s for the Ukrainians. Another one I like is Rooney to be sent off @ 17/1 > he will be so fired up its quite possible he will overdo his enthusiasm and see red... and at that price I sure hope he does...... ooopss 😜

For absolutely no reason at all (simply a wild guess) 😕 I think we will see some goals today in Spain vs France so backing this result.

3-1 Spain @ 20/1 & 3-2 Spain @ 40/1

These of course covered by my standard to come from behind to win as I can;t see either side giving up without some kind of a fightback, Sp 10/1 and Fr 16/1

Now watch me lose it all 😂 :'(

Here we go once again - more edge of the seat stuff from England I am certain.... Backing a nutty 126/1 double on Mario Balotelli getting a red card (9/1) and England coming from behind to win (14/1). :\

Being a little more serious > if Gerrard continues his great form then it will be a cracking match so don't miss this one Ed 🚬

I am sorry to say that I did miss it as I've had internet connection troubles and it wasn't on TV here so my only option was dodgy online streaming which I could not access. All I have seen are 5 minutes of highlights plus the shootout.

And in time honoured fashion, just like you predicted they went out in a penalty shootout. Again. Its getting to the stage where they should just concede and walk off when they get to penalties don't you think? At least they could spare a few individuals the agony.

What about Pirlo's penalty? That looked like the moment it all changed. England are ahead and feeling good, then they watch Pirlo dink it in and show the world he has the biggest set of balls since Zidane in the world cup final. The fear sets in and Ashley Young tries the complete opposite and leathers it so hard they are probably taking the cross bar to the panel beaters to be fixed tomorrow. You just knew it was all over right there and then.

I'm hoping for a Spain v Germany final. They are clearly the two best teams and they are both great to watch.

Wise words Ed - you are spot on with your comments > just wish one day England can win a shoot out. That's 1 win in 7 tries apparently - so very generous of the bookies to give 7/1 - or maybe that was the reason and next time it will be 8/1 haha....

Pirlo was by far the best player on the pitch and his penalty said it all - it was sublime - however someone should have told Hart about this little trick as Pirlo has been chipping them in for years - there are even vids on youtube of him doing this back in 2004!!

I agree completely with you it just has to be a Spain vs Germany final. Think today's game will be very entertaining though if Ronaldo shines and Spain play their usual tiki taka passing game..

I watched it today and to be honest it got a little boring. Spain are so good at keeping the ball that they often end up passing around and around and around, and when its 5am in the morning and you're half asleep anyway it can get a bit .. zzzz. Both teams had their moments but some good goalkeeping and poor finishing stopped either team from winning it. Ronaldo did his usual trick of blasting 2 or 3 free kicks a game over the crossbar. The guy is brilliant and can score goals but he seems to waste a lot of free kicks whenever I watch him play. Ramos did a Pirlo (Panenka for the purists) in the shootout too. Overall not the greatest game but if Germany can get past Italy I think it could be a great final.

Haha on the 😴 comment, yes I can imagine > a game at 5am would have to be gripping to keep me awake - altho' the penalty shoot out with my missus (where have you been until this time? - soccer?!? wtf....) would be 5-0 her...

I think even Bosque got the same feeling actually and changed the tactics and thus tempo a little later on, but too late to net.

One thing i did like though was that Spain acted like real world champions in the way they stayed nice and chilled towards the end with an absolute focus. That was awesome! Sadly I will be long gone in my grave before England get the knack of that!!

Now for the German machine today..... I think they are so arrogant in this tournament as usual but I gotta admit they can afford to be as they are quite outstanding - but having said that can't wait to see the Spanish wind them up in the final (sorry italy can't see you progressing) as they just love to do with any northern european team 😉

How wrong can one get!! No one saw that happening but Balotelli 💣 playing with Pirlo wow...

The german team never turned up & so their fans were even crying, yes :'( :'( :'( in the FIRST half - errr........ thats ridiculous being so arrogant that you think you can't even go behind let alone lose if you ask me 🤔

Anyway its an ice cream final on sunday, an all southern european event > should be a cracking game!

At first I though Balotelli just lost it during Italy's earlier matches, but I kind of knew that he'll be aiming a comeback! 💣

Earlier, I also thought Pirlo will be the sole driving force of Italy against the Germans but what the heck, I guess Germany kept on thinking that they never won against the Italians.

Spectacular game, though I felt bad for Germany after they let their chances miss. Now I'm really looking forward to the final round.

Good point Ben - he's a nut but when he hits form he is thoroughly entertaining and absolutely brilliant. .... Personally I am not too sad about the Germans, poor Loew couldn't even watch towards the end but following his comments as to how bad England were the other day I feel now that Hodgson should send him a text saying "who's the wally now" - after all England were not too good but they still held Italy to a draw... sorry had t make that point as true Brit 🚬

What's your take on likely scores? 1-1 in their group match... so probably won't be a goal-fest?!? 🤷

I'll be on the under 2.5 goals on this one. Its hard to pick a winner. A week ago I would have said Spain for sure, but Italy were awesome against Germany and that second Balotelli goal was a cracker. It was a crowd killer if it had not hit the back of the net! If he turns up again he could cause havoc. But you know how it is with him - the slightest thing can put him in the sulks and he becomes anonymous.

Totally agree with you, Balotelli is actually 4/5 to get a card!!! so those odds are not worth backing ✋

So 4 bets for me:

Spain from behind to win > 12/1, & to win in extra time 9/1
Italy from behind to win > 16/1, & to win in extra time 12/1

So hope Italy come from behind to win and do it in extra time as then I will be 🤑

Right, time to get the ice creams and get into the terraces in front of the tv

Geez, 4-0 Spain. Not a good result for those bets!

Well I banked a little cash from my pre-tournament bet on Spain (I also had Germany and the Netherlands winning it). Not much mind you as they were pretty firm favourites. My under 2.5 goals didn't come through on the match. Italy were destroyed after they were out of subs and down to 10 men. Spain were simply too good. That last goal was beautiful with the little cut back from Torres to Mata.

Yep those bets were complete toast at the hands of Spain haha but all in all I came out ahead due to my bet on england departing on penalties....

Now soccer-wise we can turn our attentions to the Olympics - which will probably be even harder to figure out 😕
