I think that they change the card sets. Every hand is dealt from new sets of cards...

Yes, with the exception being live dealer games which are mostly dealt like a regular live casino game.

Always play it safe! Consult our list of rogue casinos and warnings before depositing at a new casino.
Post in our forums to earn CLchips which can be used to buy real prizes in our CLchips shop.

I have just discovered I love blackjack but I also realized I have a lot to learn - I didn't realize this is something that is different between a regular casino and online? Can someone explain how/why this is or if its more a matter of the policy of each casino. Someone also mentioned Live casino - so there are possibly 3 different ways of how this can be handled and for someone like me, who is a complete beginner, does this really matter? Like is this something I should check before I start to play at a new site? Many thanks!!

At a land casino they use a shoe which is a container that holds the shuffled decks of cards. The dealer pulls cards from the shoe until reaching a marker that is placed in there after the decks are shuffled. Typically the marker may be placed about half way through the shoe. After the marker is reached, at the conclusion of the current hand the decks are removed from the shoe and shuffled before the next hand. They don't shuffle between every hand because it would take a long time and delay the number of hands played, which would mean less money earned by the casino.

The further the marker is placed into a shoe, the more cards are dealt before reshuffling and potentially the bigger advantage that can be gained by card counters. The relative depth of how far they deal into a shoe is called penetration. Card counters like games dealt with a high penetration (eg 6 decks out of 8 instead of only 4 decks out of 8).

At online casinos, the games are dealt by a random number generator that shuffles the decks of cards extremely quickly. This allows them to shuffle after every hand and makes card counting pretty much useless. However you can also play live dealer games that use real cards dealt from a shoe the same way as a regular land casino.

If you're a total beginner to blackjack none of this is particularly important. Learn basic strategy first and always use it before worrying about card counting and penetration.

100% what Ed said. Just play with basic strategy if you're playing online (and most of the time at land casinos). You'll have fun and get the chance to win. Card counting is serious business and it takes a lot. Not just anyone can do it.
