Question on USA Jackpot Wins

9 replies • Last post

Hi CL-Friends!

I have thought about this from time to time, so I will finally decide to ask.

With online gambling not being legal in the U.S., what happens when someone wins a life-changing jackpot and/or a jackpot large enough to draw attention? I mean smaller payouts are done through bank transfer or checks, but how do you send a huge win amount to a bank or try to cash or deposit a check like that without raising some eyebrows? Does anyone know what happens when someone from the U.S. wins big?

Just very curious.

Oh, hope777,

I am just very curious why you are asking this question, Joking

As I roughly know, all the governments actually do not care about or intervene in the gambling win funds coming into their country, if it is just won from the casino legally regulated. I mean that even if it is not being legal in U.S., it will be Ok. I don't know about the tax issue at all, but, probably there will be no punitive actions against the funds brought in, if you report it correctly.

I am trying to find out the same information. Last night at Drake Casino, I was playing the game Showcase, which is an Arrow's Edge game, and I got a pretty big jackpot. I was playing 20 lines at $0.25 a line and after a spin, a message popped up saying I had won a "Random Jackpot" roughly around $17,000. I have never won anything this large before so I am not sure what to expect. The casino offers bank wires with a maximum of $2500 every 7 days so my plan is to withdraw that amount every week until its gone.

My other concern is that Drake casino offers many Betsoft games and with all of the recent coverage on Betsoft and its games being unfair, I hope it does not affect my winnings. It shouldn't because like I said earlier, Showcase is an Arrow's Edge game.

If anybody has any advice or insight it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you deposit over $10k, it typically generates a CTR. If you're going to be receiving the money in several smaller deposits, I'd be careful: it may look like you're trying to use structuring for money laundering. I'm assuming as long as you report your winnings on your taxes you'll be fine, otherwise you might find yourself with an audit.

Despite "conventional wisdom" that isn't true at all. There is no federal law making online gambling illegal and a few years ago the US Department of Justice explicitly stated that the Wire Act does not apply to online casinos and other forms of online gambling. Whether it is illegal in your individual state is another question, because there are specific states (a minority) that have a law saying online gambling is illegal, or only legal if you play at a locally licensed site (e.g. New Jersey, Delaware). As always, if unsure, talk to your local lawyer.

Anyway you do ask a good question hope. From what I have been told by both casino operators and players who have won big, these sorts of payments are organised on a case by case basis depending on the specific situation of the winner. And yes I know that sounds like a very vague answer. For obvious reasons no-one is really willing to share too much info.

Congratulations locoryan! That's a great win. You should not be concerned about the Betsoft stuff because as you say it is a totally different game offered by another company. You will need to speak to the casino's payment department and see what they have to say about how they will pay you. If they don't pay it all in one go and you have to withdraw in instalments, make sure you don't fall into the trap of playing some more and losing some of your winnings. Let us know how it goes.

If anybody is curious, Drake Casino has been great so far and already wired my first withdrawal for 2500.00. They have a 2500.00 weekly limit so I will be withdrawing that amount each week. No problems with bank or with the casino. It has been an easy process. I have had a hard time staying away from the slots though, with that amount sitting in my account, but fortunately I have had good luck recently and won a little extra.

If you're struggling to stay away I recommend either uninstalling their software or if you are playing browser or mobile based games, getting someone you trust to change your password so you can't login and play until they pay you everything.

Do they allow you to queue up the withdrawals or do you have to manually make a new one every week? If the latter it is harder to work around of course unless you trust someone else to make the withdrawals for you. And now you know exactly why many casinos do that. They want people to be delayed, log in every week, and face the temptation of playing some more and losing the winnings.
