New UK licensing laws: casino closures and changes

25 replies • Last post

Note that the following information applies only to players within the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom is implementing new online gambling licensing laws as of October 1, 2014. From that date on, only casinos that are licensed in the UK will be legally allowed to accept players from there. Casinos that are currently accepting UK players have until September 16 to apply for a temporary continuation license that allows their customers to continue playing there. This temporary license is contingent on the submission of an application for a full license.

The effect of this is that rather than getting licensed, a large number of casinos are in fact pulling out of the UK market altogether and sending their UK customers elsewhere. I have started this thread to try to keep track of all the changes. Feel free to contribute if you have received an email from your casino advising you that you need to go elsewhere.

Mansion Poker has announced that it is pulling out, and is referring players to Titanbet instead. However we have been informed that this does not apply to its casino customers, and they will continue to accept UK players.

Surprisingly, VPL have now just announced that they will be closing Casino UK on September 18. They indicated that players will be migrated to another casino but they did not name it.

Its looking like Casino UK players will be migrated to Roxy Palace Casino, only a month or two after being migrated from other VPL casinos into Casino UK. Disorganised much?

Hi All,

We wanted to let you know that VideoSlots.com intends to continue operating within the UK market, and therefore our application has been submitted and is in progress.

The Software we have applied for to keep on operating with within the UK are: Microgaming, NetEnt, MultiSlot & NYX.

You may search the licensees list from this page here: https://secure.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/gccustomweb/PublicRegister/PRSe... and in the Licensee name or reference field fill in "Panda Media".

You may alternatiively click on the Gambling Commission's logo from the footer on our site - (Which will lead you directly to the application status progress).

Kind Regards,
Lucas

I highly doubt that any group that continues to accept US players will get a UK license. However I reckon that most of them will continue to accept UK players regardless. CWC's problem is that they employ people in the UK so they have to follow the rules there.

Interesting read. I have received a few emails from some of the casinos on this page like Gowild and Jackpot city saying that my account was being transfered or closed. Do you know why they arent applying for a license?

There are some very high taxes that the operators are facing if they decide to stay in the UK, and they may have decided it isn't worth their while to get the license.

Yeah, each casino knew what their UK customers cost, and if it is not much - better not get license.

I think there may be other implications than just the profitability of their UK customers. As we have seen with Ladbrokes closing their doors to Canada, some may be concerned that they will have their license applications rejected if they continue to accept customers from other countries that the UK may deem as restricted. So getting the UK license may mean cutting off customers from a bunch of other countries which means they have to make a cost vs benefit call.
