Who Has Cashed CASINO Checks at Walmart?

27 replies • Last post

Wow. What a freaking Monday. I am so sad and upset right now. You see, I have this piece of paper from a bank in Canada, and I can do nothing with it.

First, for reasons I cannot explain, I do not have a bank account right now. I did not think this would be an issue, because I read here that others were able to cash their casino checks at Walmart.

I get off work, and I go to Walmart. They cannot get their little machine to read the check, because the routing numbers are "too high up on the check." I had him try to put it through twice, because I could not believe it.

So I went to the check cashing place where I always go. But the "Bank of Montreal" does not "verify under their system." She says maybe another check cashing place has a different system, but she gives me no suggestions as to where that might be (and I know of no others off the top of my head).

I call home and ask my youngest son if he has enough in his bank account to cover for me if I sign it over to him. He checks his balance, and good news! Yes, he does. Well we go to Wells Fargo, and they will not cash it, because he has a "starter account" and has not been with them six months? WTH? My other son was able to cash a check for me at TCF after only being with them for like two months! 😢

So, being the forever optimistic person I am, I go to our NEWER Walmart, hoping upon hope they have a new machine (and it LOOKED newer, lol) that will actually READ the numbers, but alas, it would not.

Now wouldn't one think that they would have a way to enter those numbers MANUALLY???!!! But, they do not. 😢

Oldest son does not have enough in checking to cover it and cannot transfer from savings, because they charge for transfers, and his car payment just came out of checking. So we are going to try TCF on Wednesday and HOPE and PRAY.

But I am feeling very upset, cursed, and unlucky today. Did I ever tell you I hate Mondays?

I could have been home, on this gorgeous Minnesota day, by 3:30, and I arrived home at 5:30 pm feeling frazzled, anxious, and upset.

A check is only a piece of paper if you cannot cash it anywhere. And TCF is not a given. What will be their excuse, maybe cuz it is from Canada? IDK.

And the thing is, I need this money yesterday, of course, because that is what happens when one lives check to check. It is not "extra money." It is paying my car insurance, because I was double billed this month (long story, but due to the way the renewal landed).

So now I either wait until Wed, try to find someone else or call around to other check cashing places, and they take fees, of course.

I am almost afraid to keep playing, because what the heck would happen to me if it was thousands, not hundreds?

So, that is my sad story for the day, my friends.

And I would love to hear from others who were ABLE to cash at Walmart.

Geez I can't believe that it is such a big deal to cash a cheque. What is with the 6 month minimum at Wells Fargo bank? Why would they do that? Its almost as if they are saying that they don't want your money.

Sorry to hear this Hope. I can verify that I have indeed cashed casino checks from Walmart. I did it when I started gambling online because I did not trust English Harbour.

Now I can't say that it was the same bank (I am pretty sure it was Bank of Nova Scotia or something), but I did end up getting it cashed from Walmart.

I don't know if it is just your location or what, but I got mine to work.

Nowadays I cash checks from reputable casinos at my credit union and I have never had a problem. I know that isn't an option for you, but I thought I would include it.

That is ridiculous that they won't cash a check, because he has not been with them for six months? Geez. Isn't Wells Fargo one of the dishonest banks that foreclosed on people fraudulently? I hope you can get it cashed tomorrow Hope.

Well, thank God for good friends, and I mean a GOOD friend.

After standing in line earlier today at a DIFFERENT check cashing place (to see if their "system" was different, as I referred to in my above message) but leaving after waiting so darn long, since I would have been late to meet my friend who I had to meet at 6pm for a different reason.

We were talking, and I got brave and asked him where he banked. He said Wells Fargo, so I explained my situation, and I asked him if he could help. We barely made it to the drive-through before they closed. I signed the check over to him.

He asked them first, and they said, "No problem!" UNTIL they saw the check was from Canada. THEN they said he would have to deposit it, wait until like NEXT Thursday when it would clear, and then receive the funds. Well, my friend, my trusting friend withdrew $200.00 for me from his own account, trusting that the check will clear and all we be good. Talk about faith! I am honestly not sure I would have done the same thing in his position. What a RELIEF it was to not worry about that anymore, and I have been in a good mood every since, lol. When they told him he would have to wait for it to clear, I told him it was completely up to him, and I would totally understand if he did not want to do it, and he still did. 🙂

And this is extra good news, because tomorrow my oldest son was going to help me, but he lives check to check, and there would have been NO way he would have been able to wait for the check to clear and advance me that money. I would have had to wait myself.

So, all is well that ends well, but really? What a fiasco. lol When I win my thousands, instead of hundreds, I imagine then I will have to wait for the check to clear. haha! 😉 🙂

The thing is, BF, they would not NOT take it. They could not get their machine to read it, because the routing number is "too high up on the check." Otherwise, it would not have been a problem. The thing is, I believe they should figure out a way to enter the numbers manually, ya know?

Another time, I folded a check, and because it was wrinkled the machine also kept rejecting THAT check, and I had to go somewhere else then, too. I think they REALLY need to change the system to provide at least one alternative for when the machine does not "read" the check or accept the check.

Thank you, LuckyWalker. I was amazed he went for it, when he has to wait for the check to clear. That is where he went above and beyond, and I am still SO grateful to him.

Do you remember if any of the checks happened to be from Canada, LuckyWalker? And did the checks go right through Walmart's little machine? Just curious, because what of what they said about the routing number "being too high up on the check" for the machine to read it. Yeah, it was a crazy couple of days, but all is good, and what a relief!

I have only had issues with them THREE times, and all three times were silly, according to ME! lol

1) The check from Canada, due to the routing number placement on the check
2) Machine would not read, because check had been folded and just due to that little crease in the check the machine rejected it
3) This one really got me. I do taste tests sometimes, and they always cashed them, then all of a sudden they could not for some reason! 😢 And these are like always under $100.00. So I now have to take those to the check-cashing place, where they take out MORE fees than Walmart OR sign over to my oldest son.

The first two issues, above, could be simply solved by them making it possible to enter those routing numbers manually, as a type of backup to PREVENT those problems. But, no.

I will check out your post, BF. 🙂

Yeah, I guess because he hasn't had a checking account for a long time they are counting that against him. And the thing is, CL-Ed, he has checking AND savings with them, and he has his paycheck direct deposited, and he has never had an overdraft on his account. But I guess all that is not good enough anymore. I just don't like banks at all anymore. 😢

That is the exact reason why my wife and I ended up moving over to a credit union. I have found them to be more understanding, and offer better banking options and rates. Additionally, a credit union is non-profit and the members are shareholders!

I will look into that the next time I open something up, I believe.

My son's gf worked at one, and her brother still does. They both bank at a credit union now. They were able to get a way better deal through the credit union to buy both their cars. And I have been reading a lot about credit unions, articles and such, and I have been trying to inform my other two sons about them. I wholeheartedly agree with you, that barring a mattress, they are a better deal than "the banks." Thank you for the reinforcement and reminder.

I plan to open an account at a credit union too. My bank wants to charge me $11.00 a month unless I keep $1500.00 balance in there. Makes me angry. I used to belong to a credit union a long time ago. I had no problems with them at all.

That is a ridiculous amount of money to have to keep in the bank to avoid fees. Many around here offer "free checking," ut we know it is never "free," lol. They always find away to sneak in those fees. I do think credit unions are the way to go....or a safe in the wall or the mattress, because the minute amount of interest earned on our money, anywhere, is almost not worth it anymore.

That's who I have now. I can only get the free account if I don't write any checks. What kind of banking service is that? 😢 I've been with them for probably 15 years. We did have free accounts until we moved and thought our checks were stolen. We had to open new accounts and at that time they told us there was no such thing as a free checking account. I had just had a free checking account (where I paid no fees) for the last several years. Just a couple of months ago they started this $1500.00 balance thing which I think is ridiculous. Is your checking account still free Bf? Do you write checks each month? My mom has 5/3 too. She could only get free checking if she had an internet account.

Well I got my check finally from Slots of Vegas!!! I sure hope that it is good, don't need the problems with a bad check. It is from the Bank of Montreal. SOV said not to tell my bank it was from gambling, who in their right mind would do that? Well anyway I got it, not the 2500.00 I withdrew, don't know what happened to the rest of it but I did get 1170.00. Wish me luck. 😨

Thanks Hope!! The bank says that the check looks good. As for the rest of my money who knows??? Every time I email them about it the never mention it, so I am grateful that I got what I did. It only cost me $50. So I came out okay in the long run. Did your check clear, hope that it did? 👍

Yes, mine was very small, but i had no doubt that it was good. The casino I received it from has an excellent reputation, and I trust them. I just couldn't believe the issues, due to the check being from Canada, when others didn't seem to have this problem cashing casino checks at Walmart, but all is good. Now, I just need to win some more money! lol! 🙂

Alas, my dear Hope777, I know exactly what you are going through. I have had the same experience too many times with a few different casinos. Once with betonsoft lucky creek. After being turned down flat by walmart and 2 check cashing places, I finally went to a local bank of america to give it the old college try. At first, they said it was a fraudulent check and would not touch it. But I explained to them that it was my winnings from an online casino and to please just look it over. Well, she did and saw it was indeed a real and valid check. But still wouldnt cash it until they could verify it. So I ended up waiting about 4 1/2 hours there at the bank while they waited for a fax from accounts payable at lucky creek. Finally, they were able to verify and cash my check for a whopping $165.00. And that's just one experience. I have had at least 3 more really frustrating situations. I hope everything goes smoothly for you and you get the check cashed. I think that the online casinos that do accept USA players should have their checks be made from a united states bank. Or at very least, print the paying banks contact info and address on the check so it can be verified. 😢

I did resolve the situation. I didn't tell anyone that it was from an online casino, though. I said I "won a prize online." lol A friend put it in his bank account and just gave me the money, trusting it would clear, and being from Win A Day, of course it did. Walmart would have cashed it had the routing numbers lined up in their machine, but that was the big problem with that. Good thing it was not a larger amount, or I don't think my friend would have given me the money up front, and probably would have had to make sure it cleared first. I am still trying to win "that big one," though, lol! I will figure out how to cash THAT once it is in my hand. haha! 😉
